When the pit closed it was left abandoned for several years, a ghost pit, only a maintenance crew remained my grandfather being the last to finish. For the kids who lived in the terraces this was a wonderful adventure playground it had everything. We would often clamber over the winding gear in this photograph and below was a 200 yard shaft!! it's a miracle we survived.
