| The Backgammon reflected my whole week. I have never played the game before, and I was picked because I was wearing my Qld track-suit. Qld was short a couple of players, It takes about two years to become really good at it, so I was handed a set of rules and was told that I had 15 mins to learn. Five hours later after playing non stop, I was tapped on the shoulder by one of the Qld co-ordinators and was told I was playing him for the Gold. I wasn't worried who won that one, because it meant that we had just picked up 5 points for Qld. We finished playing at about 12.30 12.45am and Mirva was given the silver medal to present to me. I think that made her day. Qld went on to win the shield with N.S.W.second and Vic. third. I am not sure in what order Tassie S.A and W.A came in. My main aim at the games was to be able to win one medal and present it to my donor family. Lori (Pete's Sister) wanted to present me with a medal on the fourth anniversary of Pete's death (last Tuesday) if I could win one. I was able to present Carmel (Pete's Mum) with the Silver, I won for Eight Ball/Pool, on T.V. at the Tennis on Tuesday, in the middle of the singles games. Then after I won the Bronze for the singles, we were whisked away for another photo shoot and story for the Daily News down at Tweed Heads. After that was over, I was taken back to the Tennis, and went on to win the Gold for the Doubles. I had a very good partner, Mark Cocks. Lori got her wish, and was able to present me with not only one medal but two. I then won enough medals to present Lori, and her Dad with a Silver medal each. I have to say that my wife, Mirva, and my Donor Pete, and his family, Carmel, Allan and Lori, were definitely the Wind Beneath My Wings. |

| I entered 11 medal events plus the social cricket match. That was hilarious. Didn't get to touch the ball. The other four events I was in I got personal bests for. 50 meters Backstroke, I just swam to finish. I broke the National record and also beat the chap who set it, but was beaten for the bronze by .8sec. 50 meters Free, water temp was only 26.1 but still took 10secs of my time up here with 43secs. 5klm walk was 38.5mins beating my best time up here by 2.8mins., and got me fourth spot in my age group. Ball throw was 40.37meters and was beaten by .5 meter for the bronze. A new world record was set with a throw of 69.7 meters. Last world record was 62 meters. What made that throw more incredible was that it was thrown by Richard Hayes, (our President) who had just finished his 1500 meter run. Queenslander of course. |
