Ugandan ladies too short too broad

By Kalungi Kabuye

NONE of the 46 Ugandan girls that showed up for the first casting session of the Face of Africa 2001
modeling contest qualified for the finals. They were either not tall enough or their hips were too big.
Casting continues today from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the same place.

"I'm sorry to tell you that none of you have met the basic requirements we need for the Face of Africa,"
Jan Malan, producer of the contest, told the crest-fallen girls on the top floor of the Crane Chambers
building. "Some of you have met the minimum requirements but not fulfilled the others. But we are still
here for another day still looking and I'm sure we shall find a girl who will become the Face of Uganda and
represent this country in the finals in Sun City in May."

To meet the basic requirements for the Face of Africa, a girl needs to be at least 1.72 metres (5'7") tall, and
have hips measuring not more than 36 inches. The girls must be between 15 and 22 years. Most of the girls
that turned up beat the height standard but were too wide around the hips, with one measuring 49 inches.
Most of them were 20 years old.

"These are just the minimum requirements, for a girl to be chosen as a finalist she has to do a lot better
than that," said Ipetla Moatshe, Malan's co-scout.
