Removal and installation
tools:
2)
2 Flat head screwdriver or Spoon
3)
Plier
4)
Coat hanger wire(90 degrees)
5)
Towel cloth
NOTE: ON W124 400E,E420, ALL W126 THEY DON'T HAVE A SPEEDO CABLE ONLY CONNECTOR ON THE BACK, ITS MUCH EASY TO REMOVE THE CLUSTER.
1) Write down the position of the needles on a piece of paper (engine off) or might as well take a picture of your cluster before removing the needles.
Tips: make sure you fill up your gas so it? ill be
easy for u to position the fuel needle.
3) Basically the cluster is only held by friction so use your flathead screw driver to pry the instrument cluster, use a paper to protect the dashboard from scratch. Pry the cluster just enough to insert your fingers

4) If there's enough room for
you fingers, Apply pressure to your fingers and pull the cluster do this on the
both side of the cluster. You can also use a coat hanger to
pull the cluster. See picture below

5)After you pull the cluster , You'll not get it out far enough to get your hands on the back of the cluster. Don't pull the cluster too hard you might stretch the speedo cable .If you stretch the speedo cable to much the needle will be nervous on low speed. Just give some room for your hand to work inside the cluster (you will see later).
6) Remove the under panel cover ,These are held by four screw's on the front which is covered by a small plastic plate. See pic below.

7) After removing the 4 screw's (which holds the under panel cover )Insert your arm on a small hole (located behind the headlight switch) and work your way up to remove the speedo cable. Turn it clockwise, The speedo cable is in the center of the cluster .See pic
NOTE: If there's a black tube that's blocking the hole, On both sides where the tube is held onto the dash with supports, there is a single nut (on each side). The nut is up at the top of each support. I forget the exact size, You only need to remove the one on the left. You don't need to remove the one on the right, it will only make it 10 times harder to get back in, plus it doesn't help anyway. You have reach around the back and unscrew it with a wrench. Then you have to gently swing the tube out of the way just enough so he can get your hand up into the hole to unscrew the speedo.

Note:
If you have a big arm it
might not fit in the hole have somebody do it for you.
The last resort you can do is
bring the car to mechanic and ask him to unscrew
the speedo cable under the
transmission.
8)Unplug all the connectors on the back of the cluster ,All the plugs are unique to themselves, so you can't mistake one plug for another. They will only fit into their own spots. You need to cut the 1 wire on the temp display and splice it later on( Does not apply to all) as there's no way to unplug it.
9) If you already remove the
cluster place it on a clean surface . Remove all the screw's
at the back of the cluster using phillips screwdriver( There's 3 nuts at the back of the fuel/oil/temp gauge you
don't have to remove them they serve as a ground)
Note: The screw between the tach and speedo also serve as a ground if you didn't return this your tach will not work.
10)By using a 2 spoon or flat
head screw driver(i prefer flat head screw driver) pry each needle off of
pegs. Pull straight out not to bend pegs and make note of were each
needle points. You must return each needle in the exact same position so
that they read correctly.

11.Remove the small screw's then place the white overlays over the original plate, Align them properly before you put the overlays, Return the small screw's back. Then push each needle onto their pegs carefully and forcefully but do not bend peg. Don't worry about the outer edge of the white overlays it will be hidden by the housing. Do this on 3 gauges.
PUSH THE NEEDLES ONTO THEIR PEGS, MOVE THE NEEDLES UP AND DOWN MAKE SURE IT GOES TO ITS RIGHT POSITION. SEE YOUR NOTE FOR THE NEEDLES OR PICTURE
Note:
This is the time to replace the 2 wedge bulb 168/194
to improve more the lightning of your cluster
I recommend using PIAA extreme white bulb or Eurolite super white bulb both are
5 watts you can find
them on your local auto rice shop or ebay.
12.) After you're done installing the white gauge, place the cluster on the housing and return all the connectors then turn your ignition on and check all the needles if they're in the right place( I told you to write down the position of the needles). Adjust if necessary.
TIP: Put back the connector (plug it on the back) on the Fuel/oil/temp gauges without the housing start the engine check if the needles are in the right place (see your note on needle position). Adjust the needle if necessary, This way you don't have to remove the gauge from the housing if your needles are off.
13) If you already position the needles properly put back the speedo cable counter clockwise. Push the cluster to the dashboard. Return the under panel cover.
