| All About Philately Philately is a word coined by French collector, Georges Herpin meaning Collectionneur de Timbre Poste in french language (collection of postal stamps in English). A Philatelist is not merely a stamp collector, but he studies postal history, the origin of posts, studies folded letter sheets of the pre-stamp era, markings and postmarks on sheets and covers, establishment of and changes in postal rates, the old paque boats / pakcet boats and ship-mail, APOs and Soldiers mail, fiscals and revenues; in fact the whole postal scene. Ever since the first postal stamp The Penney Black was released in 1840 in United Kingdom, the collection of stamp started and now it is the world's most preferred hobby. Of the estimated 200 million stamp collectors in the world today, some dabble, some have taken collections to advanced, even international standards. The former US President Franklin Roosevelt has quite rightly quoted " Stamp collection dispels boredom, enlarges our vision, broadens our knowledge, makes for better citizens and in numerable ways enriches our lives " |

| The Philatelic Quote I am the world's greatest art and portrait gallery. The heroes and heroines of mythology pose within my borders. I portray the greats and the near-greats of all time. I am the world's greatest picture chronicle and miniature encyclopedia. I map communities, countries and continents, and reveal views from every strange remote corner of the earth. I depict mountains and valley; oceans, rivers, monuments and stautures; temples an ruins of temples; and everytype of locomotion, from automobiles to steamboats to space ships. I delineate all customs, sacred rites and caremonies; and nearly every variety of bird, animal, fish, fruit and flower. I frame the horrors of war and the blessings of peace. I reflect the symbols of art and culture, of natural resources and industry. I commemorate the expeditions and voyages, and the inventions, discoveries and creations that make life worth living. Millions of men, women and children are fascinated by me. Through my infinite variety they find boundless pleasure, relaxation and enchantment. Yet... I am only a Postal Stamp ! |
| Philately And Me I can not remember the exact time when I developed this hobby but, I do remember one thing that, once I had collected about 40-50 stamps in a small diary. I remeber the diary was of the year 1988 so, accordingly I was around 10-11 years old then. When I go down memory lane, I remember that, I had a lot of beautiful stamps affixed on that small diary, specially, I remember a Kuwaiti stamp which was a marvellous specimen one could have. But, I don't know how and when I lost that diary, and such was my craze for stamps that, I could not forget all those stamps. I am very much passionate about Philately. whrever I get a glimpse of a postal stamp I rush towards it like anything. A lot of people often ask me, how I could manage all these stamps hailing from different corners of the globe. Actually, a lot of people have helped me a great deal to become the owner of such a nice collection, most improtant of them was my late Grandfather, who himself was an avid collector; and I mustn't forget the contriubution of my relatives who are staying at countiries like, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bnagladesh, USA, UK etc. My friends have also helped me a great deal by contributing stamps, but, most importantly they all have rejuvinated the spirit and enthusiasm in me, whenever I displayed my collection to them and discussed about various aspects of Philately. Of late, I have bocome bit passive, in the hunt of stamps but the spirit continues to be the same. For me stamps are great source of knowledge and curiosity so, I simply call them Information Power House. In future I would like to make it a giant collection with a lot of memrobiliums, and the hunger to collect more and more will continue untill my last breath... |
