RYAN'S CAREER IN
basketball
The way Ryan's career in basketball began, it's a wonder that he is still playing. As a fifth grader, he scored just 11 points the whole season. The most he ever totalled for one game up until his freshman year was 4 points. Never the most coordinated player, Ryan was intent on being an outside shooter; however, as the tallest player in the class, Ryan was forced to play the physical inside game. His game began to improve after his freshman year, but a crucial leg injury sidelined him for nearly his entire sophomore season. Once he was all healed up, he started the B-Team as a junior. There, Ryan started slowly again, showing little signs of life shooting and rebounding the ball. But after several games, he began scoring at a rate like never before. He reached double-digits in points in each of the last 13 games of the JV season. On varsity, he came in during the districts and shocked everyone with a 15-rebound game in the first round. In the second round, he totalled 9 points in a 2:30 span in the third quarter, but the Pirates fell short of the win.

The 2000-2001 season ended on a disappointing note for the Pirates, who had their best season since the sixties. The team went into the second round of Districts 14-5, but fell short after a buzzer-beater knocked them out in the second round. The team still had a great year, and Ryan ended with 165 points and led the team with 158 rebounds and 29 blocks. Dusty Hovde led in scoring and assists, while Josh Symens was best in steals and field goal percentage.
