Was founded by the late Dr Nicolae Pavlidis from Piatra Neamt in 1986 as the Group of Thematic Philately Red Cross-Medicine of the Romanian Philatelic Association (after 1990 called Romanian Philatelic Federation). At that time the group had over 200 members (the population of this country being 23 millions). It had a newsletter issued twice a year, called Buletin Informativ (Newsletter).
As you know, in 1989 many changes occurred in Romania as in other East European countries. In these new conditions, a new impetus was necessary. Dr Pavlidis was old and Dr Dan Dumitrascu from Cluj, a member of the steering committee of the group, to take over the reorganization of the group. After a break down of our activity for about 2 years, we refounded the Group, having about 100 members only and issued the newsletter under the name MEDIFILA , quarterly.
Between 1992-1996 Dr Marius Marginean from Timisoara was coeditor and publisher of MEDIFILA. Unfortunately, he gave up stamp collecting and ceased to be a member of out group from 1996.
The newsletter is issued in 100-150 copies, about 30 of them being distributed abroad. We have contributors and readers in many countries, from all continents, including emigrated Romanians and we exchange it with similar periodicals. The publication enters philatelic libraries in Germany, UK and USA. Articles published in Medifila were used as reference or translated in medical philatelic journals from Germany, USA, UK, etc.
The group sponsors the issue of postmarks, stationeries and even stamps with medical appeal. We also organize every 2 years national stamp shows called MEDFILA and international exhibitions, like the recent one together with Israel.
The newsletter MEDIFILA is funded by the Association of Philatelists from the County Cluj (president Victor Surd).
Our group is one of the most active topical working group in Romania and one of the well known groups of medical philately worldwide.
