Dear AIESEC

Today, I am informing you of my decision to leave RDS and my traineeship one month early. This morning I turned in my two week notice of resignation effective October 31, 2000.

I do not feel welcome at RDS anymore. I have been highly under-utilized during my time here, and currently the projects that I am working on are being distributed to others. In all honestly, I do not feel respected by RDS. I feel that I got caught up in a game of office politics and I took the wrong side. I agreed with the old manager on many things (and still do) and this highly clashes with the ideology of the new manager.

I do regret that things did not work out differently. I greatly enjoyed this opportunity and I thank you for it.

I know that we have clashed at times, and I have certainly made enemies within AIESEC. For telling the truth and hurting the feelings of some, I do not apologize. AIESEC has internal flaws that need to be worked on.

By pointing these flaws out to you, I had hoped that things could be changed. Instead many people took them personally. That was not my intent. AIESEC is a fabulous organization with great individuals. But often times you are blind to the truth.

Many trainees are having very difficult times here. The exchange process is severely flawed. AIESEC is more concerned with the quantity of traineeships than the quality. One trainee that is immensely happy and is achieving great things in his/her traineeship is far more valuable than 5 or 10 moderately happy trainees. You need to screen your jobs better.

The reason that I am sending this to RO-VOICE is that I have come to grips with this reality by talking to trainees from around the country, not only Bucharest. My traineeship has been fairly good, as have others. But there are many trainees that are highly frustrated and feel that coming here was a waste of time. They did not gain any professional experience.

One trainee works for a company that is highly unethical and lies to its customers, one did laundry for their boss, others do nothing but sit and read email. Another spent the first few weeks of his traineeship moving boxes. Is this what we are here for? I don't think so. Instead of properly screening jobs, AIESEC is just in a hurry to get trainees in the country, regardless of the job. I urge AIESEC Romania to slow down. You will achieve greatness -- with time.

Realign your priorities. Forget about Insight-2 and all that other stuff. What does it all really mean if your trainees are not happy? Is that not truly what one of your main goals of AIESEC is?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so. I'm not an AIESEC member at home, so maybe that's why I disagree so much with the way things are done here. Honestly, what does it really matter if you compare to other AIESEC chapters? Does it really matter how many Insight-2 users there are in Argentina or Zimbabwe? Since AIESEC-Istanbul has 50 trainees, does that mean that you should? No, it doesn't. AIESEC Romania has no one to answer to other than itself. Exchange is not a numbers game, exchange is about experience.

It may be too late for me and for others, but in writing this I hope that I can bring a slight change to AIESEC Romania so that things will be better for the next group of trainees.

You are a great organization, and a great group of people. I have made many friends here in Romania, and you are responsible for that. I do not want you to think I am ungrateful for this experience. It has been the best decision that I have ever made.

I hope that this letter encourages discussion and hopefully can bring about small changes to aid in the development of AIESEC's future.

I thank you for everything here. While I do have my complaints, I don't regret for a minute coming here. I hope to hear from many of you in the future. If you ever make it to the states and you need a tour guide or a place to stay, look me up.

Best of luck AIESEC Romania,

Kevin Luther
