You can sense a feeling that no matter whom is elected nothing
much is
going to change in a hurry. - Chapter 2: Gol!
I couldn't have been any further from the truth. Bucharest's newly elected
mayor Traian Basescu, has announced a number of sweeping changes since he
has gained office.
Firstly, the electoral victor by less than one
percent of the votes has empowered a fleet of bulldozers to dismantle the hundreds
of kiosks built illegally across the city, vowing to give the Romanian capital
a much-needed face-lift. From a purely economic standpoint it is marvelous.
The city will benefit from an increase in taxable businesses and tourism.
Morally, hundreds of entrepreneurs, trying to make a dollar in a
brutal economy, are out of business. And secondly,
I can't believe the news today,
I can't close my eyes and make it go away.
U2.
The terrace of the Sydney Bar & Grill has been destroyed!
Without notice Mayor Traian Basescu sent a team of bulldozers into Piati
Victorei and tore down the largest, most visible and best located terrace in
town on the pretext of a "lack of building permissions".
I will not be intimidated and I will be ruthless to restore
law and civilised
business to the city.
Traian Basescu
But who does have all the necessary permits in Romania? Under closer
scrutiny whose business would stand up to all the rules? If Basescu is to
remain consistent every other terrace in town should be demolished.
The
simple truth is that the Sydney Bar & Grill are victims of their own success.
Mayor Basescu has now set a precedent and he must remain consistent.
Like it or not, it sends a message.
IIs your investment and democracy safe in Romania? Look!
Sydney Bar &
Grill
I was told that the Sydney had all the permits for the terrace except for the
large canopy, which could have been removed without the destruction of the terrace.
Others have told me that the Sydney had no permits at all.
I am not sure if I will find out the answer to this. I will ask Sasha, but
I am sure his response will be biased. So will that of the English speaking
press, I doubt any of them want to upset the Mayor.
It seems to
me that the quickest way to make any progress in Bucharest is to befriend someone
in a high position. I am now making pure speculation but perhaps an
old member of the government received the occasional kickback from the Sydney,
and in return they turned a blind eye towards the countless number of permits that
are necessary. Perhaps they had supported another candidate. Or
perhaps they had some enemies in town. It was no secret that they were successful,
and they didn't exactly play down the fact the company was based in
Cyprus for accounting reasons - it was written on the creative menu. The
change of government left the Sydney Bar & Grill open for attack in a country where
the governing bodies are ruthless.
Karma Police, I've given all I can,
It's not enough, I've given all I
can,
But we're still on the payroll.
