Criticism
Sometimes I feel that Im misunderstood.
Chemical Brothers.

Lately Ive copped a fair bit of criticism about my journal. I was asked to remove the section about the priest hitting his son because of he had forgotten a bottle of vodka. My colleague felt that it would create a negative impression of Romanian Priests. Perhaps it does, but this was not my intention. I wanted to illustrate that in my society, one person that a child could trust never to hit them would be a priest. (Please, no Catholic jokes) When I tried to explain this, he replied, But it is his child. Again, the cultural differences. I believe a child is just as much a part of this world as an adult and should be respected as such with the same rights. I am not trying to say that the society and culture that I grew up in are better. Just different, and my journal is merely the descriptive observations that one makes to illustrate this.

To avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, be nothing.
Elbert Hubbard.

On several occasions I have also been told that my journal creates a negative impression of Romania and could not be used to entice other trainees to come. Now that really pisses me off. I admit my journal is by no means a promotional site, but I try my best to display the truth in a positive light. I guarantee if it was not for my journal there would be a handful of Australians who still couldn't place Romania on a map. Surely education is a positive thing. If the Aiesecers persist in trying to "trick" trainees into coming then they shouldnt be surprised when they all leave without fulfilling their contracts. Surely the well-educated trainee who has read the truth and still wants to come is a better prospect. This would also achieve greater satisfaction amongst the companies invloved..

Dont be afraid to tell the truth.
Mustafa Kemal Attaturk.

So where does the future for Romania lie? Well thats a tough one. No one yet grasps the concept of a market economy. NATO and EU membership will help but what this country really needs is a generational change. But which generation. You ask 90% of the youth if they would like to lead a change and they reply with Who am I? I am just one person? I cant make a difference. The other 10% are more concerned about obtaining an MBA in the US in search of freedom, liberty and wealth. Can you blame them?

Brothers, sisters cant you see, the futures owned by you and me.
