The Third Doctor - Jon Pertwee  1970 -
1974
The Doctor as played by Jon Pertwee was slightly more of an establishment figure than previous Doctors in that he was working as part of the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce as a Scientific Advisor.  Underneath however he was still as anarchical as his predecessors, and as slightly arrogant.  The third Doctor delighted in patronising or scoring points of government officials, but retained a friendly, slightly familial relationship with his assistants, and the soldiers of UNIT, including Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.

Jon Pertwee is commonly known as 'The Dandy Doctor' almost solely because his Doctor wore very distinctively 'dandified' clothing.  His regency styled look included frilly fronted shirts, velvet jackets and inverness capes.  The story behind the creation of this look was that Pertwee was told to appear at a press conference and to wear what he liked, so he found some items of clothing, including some that had belonged to his grandfather, and wore them to the press conference, where they were found popular, and the look was adopted.
