Paul McGann took the role of the Eighth Doctor in the 1996 Television Movie of Doctor Who. This was a co-production between BBC Worldwide and Universal Television, and was set in America (though filmed in Canada) and was attempted to be made accessible to an American audience. It wasn't. McGann's Eighth Doctor however was a very well recieved characterisation. Similar in style to Patrick Troughton's Second Doctor and Tom Baker's Fourth, he presented an heroic younger Doctor. One who could be witty, whimsical, childlike in his sense of adventure and willingness to explore the universe, heroic in his willingness to save the universe like his predecessors and enthusiastic. This character, like his predecessor lives on in a series of novels, this time produced by the BBC, which continue his travels and adventures.
McGann has also recorded audio play adventures for his Eighth Doctor. Like those now produced featuring the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Doctors they were made by Big Finish Productions, and were released in 2001 to great critical acclaim. Another set of six plays were recorded in 2001 to see release in early 2002. There is still however an ongoing campaign to get the BBC making Doctor Who again, and a large fanbase who would love to see McGann take the starring role.
