TAAL Volcano the Killer Volcano |
|||
Taal Volcano earned than violent reputation because it had erupted with fury at least 41 times since 1572. Most major eruptions until 1965 where from the main crater, now called the Crater Lake. In 1911, she set a world record for seismic activity. It killed 1,335 persons and left only 199 injured. In 1965 Taal opened a new crater and poured streams of fiery lava onto Volcano Island and into the lake. That was Taal Volcano's last major eruption, but there have been half a dozen minor eruptions since. Taal Lake's waters were once salty, but are now classified as fresh. Taal's water is full of mystery, her waters protect an incredible array of marine life, that by laws of nature, have no right to be there... deadly sea snakes, sponges, sardines, eelss, mackerels, and until 60 years ago, sharks. This isn't the only mystery Taal Volcano keeps. You can discover some (not all) by reading The Mysteries of Tall by Thomas R. Hargrove. This is where I got the information and the inspiration to go to the Town of Taal and Taal Volcano. You can reach Taal Volcano via Talisay in Tagaytay. Take a jeepney ride from Rotonda in Tagaytay and a boat ride to Taal Volcano Island. You can hire a local guide in Taal. It is better to stay overnight in Taal because Taal Lake's water can be rough during the afternoon. |
