RIO ENKANTADO, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur

Rio Enkantado (Enchanted River) in Talisay, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

This was a very strange river source, the water flows out of a very deep cave.  We were surprised to see  2-3 ft salt-water fishes swimming in its enchantingly clear blue water. We tested and tasted the water and it was salty.

The river itself is around 25ft deep that abruptly shallows down to 5ft.  The wall you see on the lower part of the photo is not a reflected image but the actual wall submerged under water.

My first plan was to stay in Bislig, Surigao del Sur from December 17 up to December 26, 2002. Just nine days.  My friend and host Jun Osano planned several places we were going to explore, one of these is the Enchanted River (Rio Enkantado).  It is located in the municipality of Hinatuan.

People were talking about this place but we were confused by how they describe this place.  We knew that we've got to see this place.  It was accessible by vehicle but one with higher ground clearance is needed because of the deep mud you will encounter going to this place.  The weather here is very unpredictable, a true characteristic of a wilderness.

Wearing a floatation jacket, my friend Jun Osano investigated the depth and current of the water.  Because of the cave's deceptive looks, we were very careful in our approach.

We bought maps of Surigao del Sur before I went to Mindanao, but we didn't plan on exploring the river on kayak.  That would have to wait until my next visit here.

My stay in Bislig totalled to 25 days
