Project Humpback Whale Research & Conservation February - May 2002Babuyan Islands, Philippines WWF-Philippines, through its Cetacean Research and Conservation Project, has taken great strides in preserving the different marine mammal species in our territorial waters. In the past year, one of the most vigorous undertakings has been the preservation of the Humpback whale. In 1999, Babuyan Islands were identified as breeding ground for Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaengliae). It have also been confirmed that some of the breeding Humpback whales sighted in our territorial waters were sighted within the territorial waters of Japan. Succeeding expeditions hope to achieve the same positive results that the first two expeditions (2000 & 2001) acquired. |
