Ban Ren Guei
Also Known as: Half-Demon People, Larvae of the WyrmAlthough created at random or under the guidence of Wyrm institutions such as Pentex in the West, a different form of Ferectoi are more frequent in the East where they are cared for by the Kuei-Jin of the Devil-Tiger Dharma and called Ban Ren Guei, or Half-Demon People. While most Kuei-Jin have the potential to create half-damned Dhampyr children by having a Yang Imbalence and mating with a human or with another Yang Imbalanced Kuei-Jin, the Devil-Tigers find such procreation disgustingly vile. The act of mating does not bother them of course, merely the idea of creating half-damned, but innately innocent, children simply to participate in their parents evil deeds. That said, they have no problem using the half-human children of demons. Many powerful and learned Devil-Tigers will buy (and sell) Sleeper-Seducting Banes to be used in breeding cerimonies (usually the "guest of honor" at such cerimonies is unaware of their participation). The product of such unions is more then a simple Bakemono (called Fomori in the West, humans possessed by Banes), this child is as much a newborn human as they are a newborn bane. The Ban Ren Guei are fiercely loyal to their Kuei-Jin masters, and more often then not, never meet their parents (eiher the unwilling human parent, or the Bane spirit). Ban Ren Guei have normal human lifespans (rather then the 200-300 year lifespan of Dhampyrs), and anything but normal lives. The P'o of Ban Ren Guei exert much more control than the P'o of most Kuei-Jin. Whatever the true Nature of the Ban Ren Guei, the P'o Nature is always pushing for control, and often wins. Most Ban Ren Guei have learned not to fight their P'o, raised by the brutal and self-proclaimed-evil Devil-Tigers, the Hun of the Ban Ren Guei often learns to accept its place in the world. Even if the Hun chose to rebel against its Kuei-Jin master, the P'o is ALWAYS loyal. If Ban Ren Guei are sold into the service of others, their P'o follow their former masters wishes by following the new master with the same devotion. If their master is not around (because of death, displacement or abandonment), then the P'o does what it can to follow its P'o Nature any way it can (often a P'o in this state will find itself drawn to other Devil-Tigers, hoping to find a new master). Each Ban Ren Guei is born with a few Bane-Powers (two-three, or five if you don't automatically allow Berzerker and Immunity to Delirium). These powers are all they will ever know, as they cannot learn Kuei-Jin Disciplines, shapeshifter gifts, Dhampyr Joss or other advantages. They are able to learn rites (even certain arts like Feng Shui and Tzu Wei), if they can find a Kuei-Jin or Hengeyokai able to teach them (as they have access to both Chi and Gnosis), but doing so is difficult and time consuming. It is thought that Ban Ren Guei can never earn new Bane-powers, but some believe that if they can find their Bane-mothers in the Tapestry (Umbra), the can ask for new maternal blessings (new bane-powers). |

Ban Ren Guei have very unique mental qualities and physiology. They have no more fear of fire or the sun than any other human, so they do not suffer Wave Nature or Rtschreck (nor do they suffer any daytime penalties). They are very susceptable to Fire Nature or Frenzy however (+2 to standard difficulties) and like the Kuei-Jin are susceptable to Shadow Nature, allowing their P'o Natures to become dominent. They do not follow Dharmas as Kuei-Jin do, but they often follow the tenets of the Howl of the Devil Tiger.
Deman Chi/Rage (if applicable) can be used just as the Kuei-Jin or Hengeyokai use it. Demon Chi points (no more can be spent per turn then the stamina rating) can be used to to increase strength, speed, stamina or to grow fangs (two demon chi points for a toothy maw). Demon Chi can also be used to revive the Ban Ren Guei after it has been incapacitated (roll the Demon Chi dice difficulty 7 and spend one point, each success heals one health level), but doing so causes perminent, unhealable scars. Any wounds beyond incapacitated lead to an early death. Yin and Yang Chi can be spent to stave off hunger, fatigue or thirst for a day (one point), as Ban Ren Guei do have those needs just like normal humans. Like humans, Ban Ren Guei cannot suffer from Chi imbalance. Yin and Yang Chi can also be used to speed in healing just as Kuei-Jin do (one point per one health level, or five for one aggravated level), otherwise they have normal mortal healing times. Ban Ren Guei may also soak most damage just as Kuei-Jin would. Only one Yin or Yang Chi may be spent per turn. Ban Ren Guei can regenerate Yin and Yang Chi while sleeping or meditating (after at least two hours of rest roll one die per Hun dot, difficulty 6, to see how many were regained), but if they wish to regain more, or regain it quicker, they can gain it from the flesh of others. Eating the flesh of mortals is extremely effective (for both Yin and Yang). Chi can also be gained by drinking the blood of Shen (any supernatural creature. One Kindred Bloodpoint = 1 yin chi, one Shapeshifter gnosis point= one yang chi, Kuei-Jin blood offers either, etc.). Demon Chi can be regained while sleeping as well, but comes much more naturally for the half-demon (one point for every hour of rest). Using Gnosis is more difficult. Few Ban Ren Guei have learned what this substance is for outside of the Tapestry (where it can sustain them as it does Hengeyokai), but merely posessing it seems to help conceal their wyrm taint. It is difficult, but not impossible, for those with Sense Wyrm to sense the innate evil in Ban Ren Guei. If it needs said, the Ban Ren Guei cannot be embraced, or turned into Ghouls, Shapesifters, Changelings, etc., nor can they learn true magic. When they die, Ban Ren Guei become Banes of Rage, or if they have strong Huns, they become Wraiths (their P'o Nature becomes their Shadow Soul), but they cannot return to earth as Kuei-Jin, because unlike the P'o of Kuei-Jin, the Bane-P'o of a Ban Ren Guei has no desire to leave Yomi World. Ban Ren Guei can have children, just as Dhampyrs can, but like the children of Dhampyrs they are normal children if all respects, even if the other parent is a Shapeshifter or other supernatural creature. Rumors persist that the child of a Ban Ren Guei and Dhampyr coupling would produce an anything-but-normal child, but there are no Dhampyrs or Ban Ren Guei willing to debase themselves with the other to find out. Ban Ren Guei are very different from western Ferectoi. As noted earlier, they have access to Chi (which Ferectoi do not), and they have only limited access to Gnosis (whereas Ferectoi commonly have access to and know how to use large amounts of Gnosis). Addittionally, while Ban Ren Guei serve as the prized slaves of Kuei-Jin (only one step above Bakemono), the Ferectoi are often looked up to by Fomori and Wyrm institutions (like Pentex), and often have any number of banes who look to them as master. |

Succubus/Inccubus
Also Known as: Breeder Banes, Sleeper-Seducing BanesThese Yang demons appear as hiddeous wet, fleshy, masses - little more then walking wombs - studded with various tentacles, spikes and segmented legs. While these Banes can technically strike anyone at anytime, they prefer to wait for a master, such as a Devil-Tiger Kuei-Jin, to call on them. This assures that their offspring will survive childhood. They materialize while mortals and Shen sleep, seducing their victims with charms that leave the sleepers believing that the visit was nothing more then an exotic dream. Shen (changing breeds, Kuei-Jin, etc) may roll their Willpower, difficult 8, to awaken. Coincidentally, the victims need not be male. These banes can take ova just as easily as seed, leaving the victim to wonder about why her next cycle is off.

Bane-granted PowersI generally consider some powers to be a given for an half-Bane person: Immunity to Delerium, Berzerker and Spirit Ties which grants the Ban Ren Guei the ability to interact with shapeshifters, five dots of Rage/Demon Chi and access to Gnosis. These could also be treated as just other powers to be chosen during character creation. ("Dharma Book: Devil Tigers" says Ban Ren Guei get three powers while "The Book of the Wyrm" says they have at least five powers each.) If you don't want to use Demon Chi or Gnosis, use Willpower points where appropriate. Unlike Fomori or Bakemono, Ban Ren Guei have no problem hiding their extra powers. To activate powers (other then the two listed above which are always on), it costs one Demon Chi. More than one power may be activated in the same turn with a single Demon Chi, but some powers, such as Gaseous Form, need to be turned on seporately as they perclude the use of all other powers. Wise Ban Ren Guei learn to combine what few gifts they have to make them more useful (for example, imagine combining the Eyes of the Thousand Hells with the Devil's Tongue, or the Mouth of Hell with Stomach Pumper).
Choose Threeor create your own, or see the afore-mentioned book "Freak Legion: A Players Guide to Fomori."
Lashing Tail: [Bakemono Cost 3] This tail does not grant extra turns, nor is it able to pick up or manipulate objects, but it does have a strength+2 attack and it can be used to hold an opponent with a strength+2 grip. Attacking with the whip requires a dexterity + Brawl roll, difficulty 8. Eyes of the Thousand Hells: [Bakemono Cost 3] the eyes dilate, revealing images of damnation. Those who gaze into the eyes are frozen in fear until the demon looks away. They can attempt to make a Willpower roll, difficulty 8, to escape the gaze after one turn. Devil's Tongue: [Bakemono Cost 4] The tongue becomes long and sluglike, and able to speak in a demonic voice. The voice of the tongue that causes instant Delirium in mortals. To use this dreadful power on Shen (or other supernaturals), roll Charisma + Intimidation (difficulty the victim's Wits + Courage). The victim may counter this with a Willpower roll difficulty 8. If the Ban Ren Guei has more successes (or the victim botches), the victim flees in terror (Wave Soul), if the Ban Ren Guei fails, the victim is weirded out, but otherwise unaffected. A botch on behalf of the Ban Ren Guei leaves the victim immune to any further attempts of intimidation by the Ban Ren Guei. The tongnue may also lick in close combat for two dice of damage, plus 1 aggrivated (other sources give this "two dice of unsoakable aggrivated damage." Storyteller's discression). Huge size/unnatural strength: [Bakemono Cost 6] The muscles of the Ban Ren Guei grow to an unnatural size, causing the Half-Demon to appear freakishly huge (at least a foot and a half of extra height, and two feet in girth). This gives the Ban Ren Guei four extra dots in Strength. Claws or knuckle spikes or horns (etc): [Bakemono Cost 3 each] Inflicts strength + one aggrivated damage. Each location should count as a seporate power (ex: claws on both hands would be one power, horns would be a seporate power, etc.) Devil's Hide: [Bakemono Cost 6] The form of the armor varies, but it usually has a very biological appearance, like thick animal hide, scales, turtle shell or disgusting ooze that cuases attacks to slide off. Whatever its form, the hide offers three additional soak die and the ability to attempt soaking three aggrivated damage die (difficulty 6). Devil's Thorns: [Bakemono Cost 6] Thick, heavy spines cover the body. Each quill is hooked at the tip, so if it comes in contact with soft tissue it can become lodged. Half of the hand-to-hand combat damage inflicted against a Ban Ren Guei with this power before soaking is inflicted on the attacker. The attacker may soak, but any damage that is inflicked on the attacker equals a quill stuck in the attackers body. It counts as aggravated until it is removed (it must be pushed all the way through the body or cut loose). Quills do not soak damage unless cmbined with armor. By sending an extra Demon Chi, the quills can be ejected from the body. Roll strength, number of successes determine number of quills sent (this can be rolled again for each Demon Chi point spent on this attack). Quills travel 5 feet from Ban Ren Guei. Boils of Hell: [Bakemono Cost 5] These poisonous tumors lurk just bellow the surface of the skin. When the skin is pieced (with bullets, arrows, knives, claws, fangs, etc.), the blisters burst open, spraying a powerful venom. The venom causes 3 to 5 soakable damage levels (depending on the range), and can be dodged if the attacker is using a melee weapon. The spray travels 3 feet. Slick Skin: [Bakemono Cost 3] The secretions of the skin are thick and mucus-like, covering the entire body. Attempts to harm the Ban Ren Guei increase in difficulty by 3, and the Ban Ren Guei's attempts to escape capture decrease in difficulty by 3. Gaseous form: [Bakemono Cost 6] Allows the body to defuse into a gaseous state that remains cohesive even in strong winds. While in the form no physical attacks can be made by or at the Ban Ren Guei, but the cloud does have a nasty odor that few can stand. Transformation to and from this form requires a Willpower point and three seconds. Plasmic form: [Bakemono Cost 6] Allows the body to turn into a thick blood-like liquid, able to move under its own free will. This liquid is no more resistant to harm then a solid body, but kenetic attacks (knives, bullets, fists, claws, etc.) do not affect it. Transformation to and from this form requires a Willpower point and three seconds. Mouth of Hell: [Bakemono Cost 4] This power allows the Ban Re Guei to swallow objects as large as a medium-sized dog. The objects remain undigested for three hours, but any object requiring air (like a medium-sized dog), will suffocate if held for too long. All indigestible items (bones, shoes, glasses, etc.) will be eliminated normally. Stomach Pumper: [Bakemono Cost 3] Enambles the Ban Ren Guei to vomit forth all that it has recently eaten, along with acidic, slimy stomach juices. A jet of vomit can blast up to 25 feet away and cover a single foe, but most can only shoot three blasts per day (more if combined with Mouth of Hell). This attack causes two dice of damage and causes the victim to gag uncontrollably for three turns unless a Willpower point is spent or the somehow clean it off. Fleshflow: [Bakemono Cost 5] This disturbing power allows the Ban Ren Guei to take on the appearance of anyone it wishes, even animals whose mass is comperable to his own. This power takes three turns to complete, and causes three unsoakable levels of lethal damage as the body twists and turns into its new shape. Webbing: [Bakemono Cost 5] Like the Kumo, this allows a Ban Ren Guei to create webbing thanks to a football-sized gland and hand-sized oriffice in their stomachs. The naturally sticky webbing is almost an inch in diameter, but hard to see at a distance (or at fast speeds). The webbing can be considered to have Armor Six and three Health Levels. To use this properly the Ban Ren Guei must learn a new skill, Web-Making (this can be taught by a Kumo, or learned through months of practice). Each blast costs a point of Rage/Demon Chi. Spirit Eye: [Bakemono Cost 4] when this third eye (on the forehead) is opened, it gives the Ban Ren Guei two extra die in perception rolls, but when activated with an additional Demon Chi, the eye glows and allows the Ban Ren Guei to look into the Mirror Lands (while looking at the Penumbra, the Ban Ren Guei is unable to see the physical world). Hengeyokai (shape-shifters) approaching in the physical world are visiable as ghost-like images and appear in Crinos forms. Other supernatural creatures give off similar tale-tale signs to Ban Ren Guei using this power (most notably Wraiths and Changlings), but mortals and other natural things in the real world can not be sensed until the power is turned off. Passage into the Mirror Lands: [Bakemono Cost 5] This allows the Ban Ren Guei to travel into the Penumbra, and eventually beyond, "stepping sideways" just like a werewolf. This costs a point of Rage/Demon Chi. Regeneration: [Bakemono Cost 5] This enables a Ban Ren Guei to heal incredably fast. Bashing damage can be healed at a rate of one level per non-combat turn, lethal damage in three non-combat turns. The does not affect aggrivated damage. There is a downside to this powerful ability: every wound healed leaves an ugly and very visable scar that lasts for a day before disappearing. (non-Ban Ren Guei with this power, like Makuro Hiko or Bakemono, keep the scars indeffinately, but can heal one level of aggrivated damage per day) Hellish Beauty: [Bakemono Cost 5] Whatever the physical appearance of the Ban Ren Guei, this power mixes pheromones and aura to make the Half-Demon supernaturally compelling. When activated this effectively adds +3 to the characters appearance (even if that takes the rating above 5), so no matter what the chracter looks like, others are drawn to its exaggerated beauty. Savage Genitalia: [Bakemono Cost 2] Be creative. |
Merits and FlawsMany Merits and Flaws in other vampire or werewolf sourcebooks can apply to Ban Ren Guei, here are some new ones that would be specific to them. Demon Chi Attunment (3 pt. Merit): possessing a strong bond between P'o and Hun (wanted or unwanted), the Ban Ren Guei is able to regain Demon Chi at twice the normal rate (two per hour of rest). Unlike their Dhampyr "cousins" they cannot be attuned to Yin or Yang Chi. Sheltered Upbringing (2 pt. Flaw): You were raised by the Devil-Tigers since birth, having no contact with "normal" humans. As a result you are unable to completely blend in with mundane humans, and might be more prone to act violently thinking that to be acceptable ettiquet. This provides a +1 pentalty on all social rolls with mundane humans (or less violent Shen). Silver Allergy (3 pt. Flaw): Like many Hengeyokai, you have an unnatural aversion to silver. Not only does the stuff unnerve you, but you endure +1 aggrivated damage when injured by silver (this does not include merely handling silver, but that would be unsettling for the afflicted Ban Ren Guei). Fetishes and Klaives involving silver have their full affect on you, just as they would on Hengeyokai. Weak P'o (4 pt. Merit): For whatever reason, your Bane-self is not as strong as it is in other Ban Ren Guei (only 3 points of Demon Chi/Rage, instead of 5). As a result, Shadow Soul is less of a risk, and betraying your masters becomes much easier. Should your master discover that your P'o is not as strong as other, more loyal, Ban Ren Guei, your master would not be happy. |
Other Half-creaturesBan Ren Guei aren't the only freaks on the block. See the Dhampyr section for information on the Half-Damned, their venerated ancestors, the Jin Hai, and their twisted siblings, the Makuro Hiko (as the Makuro Hiko have powers similar to both Ban Ren Guei and Dhampyrs, it is not hard to imagine what the children of the two half-humans would be like). There are even half-vampire Dhampirs in the west. |
Other "Parents"Devil-Tigers are the most prominent producers of Ban Ren Guei, but the Half-Demon People can have other foster parents. Heretical Dharmas like The Face of the Gods and The Scorpion Eaters likely have members who practice in Bane-trading and Ban Ren Guei production. The Hengeyokai "traitors" called Kumo (the spider people), might also be regular facilitators of Bane breeding (and their Ban Ren Guei would have the Webbing power almost without fail). Akuma, dispite their use of Bakemono and connection to evil powers, would be unlikely to employ Ban Ren Guei, even with powerful P'o, they are too free-spirited to be trusted. There are no naturally occuring Ban Ren Guei. Without the guidence of someone who knows the ways of Chi, they would be nothing more than regular Ferectoi.
