HABAKKUK

Habakkuk is a prophet who sees violence, wickedness, and lawlessness all around him. He earnestly pleads for God to do something about it.

God reveals what He is doing through the Chaldeans (Babylonians).

Habakkuk struggles with the idea of a holy God using such a wicked nation as His implement of judgement.

In a series of woes God shows the outcome of each aspect of the proud, haughty nation and the futility of their approach because ultimately the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of God just like the water fills the sea.

Habakkuk prays for a revival of God's work, trembles at a vision of His splendour and might, and admits that even if total economic collapse comes he will rejoice in the God who saves.

1:1 Introduction.

1:2-4 Habbakuk:
How long will You do nothing? Violence, wickedness, and injustice abound.

1:5-11 The LORD:
Look what is happening in the world. The mighty Chaldean nation sweeping over the world and conquering it.

1:12-17 Habakkuk:
You are eternal, so we are safe.

I can see You have appointed them as a judgement, but how can You approve of what they do? They catch nations like fish - then offer sacrifices to the net.

2:1 Habakkuk:
I will keep watch until I get an answer. I suspect He will tell me off.

2:2-3 The LORD:
Write the vision clearly so all can understand it. It will certainly happen - but not until the right time.

2:4-5 A righteous person lives by faith, but they are a proud, haughty nation, never satisfied, who devour all.

2:6-8 Woe to the one who makes money using money that does not belong to him. It will turn back and bite him.

2:9-11 Woe to the one who builds a lovely house by killing nations. It will bear witness against him.

2:12-14 Woe to those who found a city on violence and bloodshed. Ultimately the whole world will know the LORD.

2:15-17 Woe to those who use alcohol and drugs to take advantage of others. They will be disgraced.

2:18-20 Woe to those who make idols. The LORD is the One who commands real respect.

3:1 Habakkuk's prayers:.

3:2 LORD revive your work.

3:3-7 God's awesome splendour.

3:8-15 The LORD's earth-shaping might.

3:16-19 Habakkuk trembles. Though the economy collapses he will rejoice in God who saves.
