Inside the tomb the body was laid on a shelf for the flesh to rot away.
Later the bones could be collected together and placed in an ossuary (a box for holding bones) which was then placed in one of the niches in the wall. So several generations of a family would use one tomb, and a person was "gathered to his ancestors". |
