A long wooden beam is pivoted at one end and hefty stone weights are hung on the other end. Small sacks of crushed olives are stacked under the beam near the pivot.
Hanging the first weight on the beam produces the finest olive oil for holy purposes or making cosmetics. Hanging further weights on the beam results in oil for cooking. The coarsest oil resulting from all the weights combined is used in lamps. |
