A short bio of me finds that I was born in Memphis, Tennessee, but spent the better part of my growing up years in Brandon, Mississippi. My parents have retired and have moved back to Arkansas, but I still call Mississippi my home. I'm a diehard Arkansas Razorback fan when it comes to college sports. I received a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in creative writing. I also earned a Master's in English from the University of North Alabama where I wrote my thesis on Alternate Histories of the Civil War. I'm also a staunch Southerner and a big nut about American history, particularly the Civil War. I'm a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, belonging to SCV camp #1368 in Florence, Ala. I am involved in some reenacting which certainly opened my eyes to much of the realities of the soldier. The more I read and learn about Southern history, the more I become a Southern Nationalist...yeah, one of those folks who think the South should secede again. I am a Christian and am currently shopping around for a new home church in our new home of Oxford, Miss./Lafayette County. We moved here the week after Christmas because BJ was offered a job (which she took) with the University of Mississippi.
I am a writer, and have had published more than a handful of stuff, mostly comics. I've written over 70 comics and I also ran the small press publishing company, Silverline. Much of my career has also found me doing a lot of editing. I was an editor for Malibu/Marvel (more on that below) and edited a small weekly newspaper in Arkansas. I do also write prose
(click here to get a selection of short stories to read), and I've finished two novels. Nah, I don't have a "buyer" for them just yet, but feel free to drop me a line to check on my progress! Meanwhile, I'm busy on my third!

I read somewhere that I don't have enough about comics on this page, particularly since I spent more than 10 years working in the industry. Ah well...So here goes...

I first started in comics in 1988, about the time I graduated from USM. During my last year, I met two really talented artists: Mitch Byrd and Steven Butler. Together the three of us produced the first few issues (Steven, who inked these issues, went on to do his own pencilling!) of a series called Cat & Mouse. It did fairly well during its run, bit more importantly led me to other work like Vortex, Miss Fury and others (for a complete bibliography, hit the link just below).

In 1992, I was hired by Malibu Comics out in California (who had just entered into the famous "Image" deal) to come edit what became the GENESIS universe, or PROTECTORS LINE of comics (included Dinosaurs For Hire and Ex-Mutants). In a little less than a year, the Ultraverse was launched, and Malibu decided to focus on that line, which was getting better sales than the Protectors. So they cancelled that line and moved me to the Ultraverse where I edited such titles as: Night Man, Strangers, Sludge, Prototype and others.

Not long after that, I was made Managing Editor of all of Malibu. I still had to edit my monthly titles, and on top of that had a whole stack of PAPERWORK that I now had to do.

Then Marvel bought Malibu and everything went downhill from there! At first, admittedly, it was kind of exciting. One of the things we really thought would happen was increased circulation. Heck, with Marvel's muscle, we figured we'd be everywhere. It didn't happen. Oh well, there was a whole bunch of fun mixed in there, but the buy-out certainly didn't turn out like many of us thought it would.

So I moved back home to Mississippi, and after some "down" time when I had to just step away from it all...I decided to plunge back into it. Much of it had to do with friends that I hadn't talked to in some time. People like Thomas Florimonte (Zomboy), Barry and Jenni Gregory, Marks Largent and McCrary, and a whole bunch of others. They were actually HAVING FUN doing comics. I had forgotten that it could indeed be fun, and that is the way it ought to be. I dove back into the industry as a publisher, taking on the name Silverline, the same named I'd used earlier as a Packager with Steven and Mitch. Silverline published Switchblade and SilverStorm written by me (link above-go check it out) and others.

Then BJ (wife) got a job at The University of North Alabama, and while she wasn't quite finished with her PhD, we decided it was well worth the move. We moved there in September of 1998! We liked the area quite a bit. When I entered the Masters program at UNA, the Silverline stuff took a backseat, though work on some projects still progressed at a snail's pace. I still eventually published The Scary Book, Marauder, and Cybertrash and the Dog. I had a couple of other projects in the works, but they never saw print because I ran out of money. I eventually turned those back over to the writers in the hopes that they could aggressively pursue publication. Even though I told all of the respective creators, I felt horrible that I couldn't eventually publish the books. I hope they are able to publish them and do well with them. One of the projects that I was writing was with a very talented newcomer, Anthony Pereira (who, as of this writing, is missing--if you know this guy, tell him to write or call or otherwise get in touch with me! You should see this guy's work--FANTASTIC!).

Then I started teaching college courses, at the local community college and then the university. I taught ESL to international students at the one and English composition to incoming freshmen at the other. I ended up full time at UNA in the ESL department before they cut back to just a couple of full time employees. It was too bad, too, because I enjoyed that quite a bit. During this time, we'd sold our house in Florence and moved just across the state line to Loretto, Tenn. We liked the country setting and could still be in Florence in about 40 minutes.

Then BJ and I took a job as a husband/wife team with a collegiate furniture company. It was a family owned business and one she had met through her position at UNA. We really liked the family and so--even though it was totally different for us--we decided to try it out. For several months, I traveled with one of the owners while BJ mostly worked the phones. I learned a bunch about furniture. For the most part, it was enjoyable. Financial woes hit them and they had to let us go.

Then I took a job as editor of a small weekly paper in Piggott, Ark. I published comic books that had a higher circulation! However, it was in the town that my family had lived for 150+ years, and I thought if it could work out, that it might be the place we could actually settle and stay. I took about half of what I'd been making elsewhere because I wanted to try it so badly. Unfortunately, the publisher--my direct boss--seemed to know very little about the actual publishing business and we didn't see eye to eye on very many things. Even though he said he wouldn't censor me, it only took him about 3 months before he started doing just that. After nearly a year, when I'd done the things I told him I'd do, I asked for a raise. He said "see ya." Ah well.

Then BJ took the job mentioned with Ole Miss. She's loving it, too. I've currently got a full plate of writing assignments...but am nervous about what I'll do when they come to an end--always the worry of a freelancer!

Our kids are growing like weeds. Brittany is 13 and Brett is 8. They both enjoy reading and sports, which is just fine. Brittany, who is in eighth grade, plays volleyball at school on the JV team. She is also on the JV softball with the Lafayette County school. Brett's grades have been great, too. He's only made one score less than 90 since we've been here. Parents are quite proud. :)
