Disaster In Detroit? Or DSLD..DSL Depression?
Team Update - What's going on in D-town? After an impressive start to the 2003 calender year going 12-2-0 in January, the Red Wings have stumbled and are holding onto 1st place by a thread. February started out nicely, with all but 3 games played on home ice the Wings won thier first 4 games. A tie with the stubborn Sabres and one goal losses to Atlanta and Vancouver was not the way to prepare to face back to back games vs. three of the leagues top teams in Edmonton, Washington, and Los Angeles. Then Disaster struck...or more like depression set in...we'll explain. With connection problems, the playing had to be done by a sub-GM, followed by to simms ended the month of February with a record of 5-4-2. Not aweful but losses to conference rivals Oilers and Kings were crucial. It seemed like this was a case of DSLD. Or better know as DSL-Depression and the Red Wings were sinking in it fast all the while watching the Wild, Kings, and Oilers catch up or pass them in the standings. Determined by assurances by the always reliable internet service provider, Detroit entered the month March with renewed confidence. The Coyotoes gave them a loss for the first game, winning on a trickler past John Grahame. Brent Johnson was sitting with a bad case of fatigue....luckingly it lasted one game as BJ was slotted in to started in Columbus vs. the division foe Blue Jackets.
Detroit Acquires Kapanen For The Playoffs
Red Wings Just Got Faster DETROIT, MI - The Detroit Red Wings got even faster Thursday after completing a deal that brings in winger Sami Kapanen from the Ottawa Senators. A day before the May 23 trade deadline, The Wings sent Niklas Hagman, thier 2nd round and San Jose's 3rd round draft picks for this year to the Senators, and got in return Kapanen, Boston's 4th round draft pick, $500k cash, and a $300k loan till the offseason. Instead of waiting till the offseason, Detroit proceeded to waive veteran UFA defenceman Fredrik Oluasson, and Jimmie "the one time great" Olvestad to clear $1.4mm. It was reported that Ottawa incquiring about RFA winger Ivan Novoseltzov, but Detroit was hesitant to let the speedy winger go. Kapanen is expected to be in a Wings jersey bearing #24 in time for thier next game vs. San Jose. "Sami's conract scared off most teams but we aere able to see the benefits short term despite the financial sacrifice. With the additions next season to include Henrik Zetterberg, Petr Cajanek, and Dimitri Bykov we felt we are pretty solid in our youth movement to give up the draft picks. We think Nik Hagman has a bright future and should progress nicely in Ottawa, but his development was a bit too slow for our orginization and it made him available. Detroit's lines will now look like this: Bertuzzi Fedorov Hossa Kapanen Datsyuk Murray Huselius Draper Bure Novoseltzev Roest Domenichelli Team Notes: In a other small trade, the Red Wings sent thier 4th round draft pick to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for 21 year old Darryl Bootland, a forward in the Grand Rapids system.
