The M.C. Escher Gallery


In this gallery I'll try to tell you something about all of the pieces I'm showing you.
You'll see the English name, the original (Dutch) name, the size, the technique and a (short) description.
When you click on M.C.Eschers signature, you'll see the picture.


Name : Castrovalva (Castrovalva)
Year : 1930
Size : 53 x 42 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : This is a picture of a rocky scenery in the Abruzzen (Italy).

Name : Fluorescent sea (Lichtende zee)
Year : 1933
Size : 33 x 24.5 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : Escher was so impressed by the phenomena of fluorescent sea,
that he made a litho of it.

Name : Portrait of Ir. G.A. Escher (Portret van Ir. G.A. Escher)
Year : 1935
Size : 26.5 x 21 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : This is a portrait of M.C. Escher's father at the age of 92.
This print was pressed on a special way. First it was pressed on a sheet of paper,
then, when the ink was still wet, the paper was pressed on another sheet of paper.
Result : An exact copy of the original (Not mirrored)

Name : Day and night (Dag en nacht)
Year : 1938
Size : 39 x 68 cm.
Technique : Wood, 2 pieces.
Description : In the centre are black and white birds developed out of grey fields.
To the left, the white birds become the day-sky, to the right the black birds become
the night-sky.

Name : Reptiles (Reptielen)
Year : 1943
Size : 33.5 x 38.5 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : The career of a crocodile. A 2D crocodile becomes a 3D crocodile.
This crocodile starts to walk, on the book, over the triangle. Then he rest some time,
and blows some steam. After that, down along the astray, and back into the 2D drawing.

Name : Self-portrait (Zelf portret)
Year : 1943
Size : Round, 18 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : A selfportrait of M.C. Escher.

Name : Eye (Oog)
Year : 1946
Size : 15 x 20 cm.
Technique : Mezzotint
Description : Portrait of M.C. Eschers eye, seen in an shaving mirror. In the pupil you can see
a skull.

Name : Dewdrop (Dauwdruppel)
Year : 1948
Size : 18 x 24.5 cm.
Technique : Mezzotint
Description : This displays a leave of a succulent plant. The real size is about 2 cm.
In the dewdrop, you can see the reflection a window. The dewdrop is also a magnitude
lens, which shows the veins of the leave, and the bubbles of air between the leave and
the dewdrop.

Name : Curl-up (Wentelteefje)
Year : 1951
Size : 17 x 23.5 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : This is a description about the fantasy animal 'The curl-up'.
This animal shows up the a litho called 'The house of stairs'.

Name : The house of stairs (Trappenhuis)
Year : 1951
Size : 47 x 24 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : Almost the whole litho is mirrored somewhere else on the litho.
A technique called slide mirroring is also used.

Name : Liberation (Bevrijding)
Year : 1955
Size : 43.5 x 20 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : On the uniformly gray surface of a strip of paper that is being unrolled,
a simultaneous development in form and contrast is taking place.
Triangles, at first scarcely visible, change into more complicated figures,
whilst the color contrast between them increases. In the middle they are transformed
into white and black birds, and from there fly off into the world as independent creatures.
And so the strip of paper on which they were drawn disappears.

Name : Rind (Omhulsel)
Year : 1955
Size : 34.5 x 23.5 cm.
Technique : Wood, 4 pieces.
Description : The face of a woman, striped like the rind of an apple.
The perspective is enhanced by the clouds on the background.

Name : Three worlds (Drie werelden)
Year : 1955
Size : 36 x 25 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : This litho consists of 3 elements. First, the leaves on the water. Second,
the trees reflected in the water, and third, the fish in the transparent water.

Name : Print gallery (Prenten tentoonstelling)
Year : 1956
Size : 32 x 32 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : Magnifying to the empty centre of this print. Around this centre,
everything is rotated a bit clockwise.
At the bottom right, you'll enter the print gallery. A man stands there, hands on his back,
looking at the prints. On the bottom left side, the young man is about 4 times larger than the
man at the bottom right. The young mans head is relative also larger than the rest of his body.
He's observing a print, of which he's a detail himself.

Name : Mosaic II (Vlakvulling II)
Year : 1957
Size : 32 x 37 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : The whole rectangle is filled with different shapes.
The total amount of them can only be found by exact counting.

Name : Belvedere (Belvedere)
Year : 1958
Size : 46 x 29.5 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : On the bottom left lays a drawing of a cube. In the two circles on this drawing
you can't say is the line is before or beyond the other line. The boy sits with such a strange
impossible cube. The complete buiding is based on the same theory. The ladder on the lower
platform is inside the house, but on the upper platform the ladder is outside the house.

Name : Ascending and descending (Klimmen en dalen)
Year : 1960
Size : 35 x 28.5 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : The stairs on top of this building are one way always ascending, the opposite
way, they are always descending

Name : Waterfall (Waterval)
Year : 1961
Size : 38 x 30 cm.
Technique : Litho
Description : Every single part of this print is correct, but all together it is impossible.
The left tower is one floor higher than the right one. The water streams down, but at the
end it is on top of the highest tower.
