Tycho
Celchu, The need for new pilots to fill the ranks of Rebel squadrons
after Yavin was acute. Many pilots volunteered, but only the very
good ones joined Wedge in what would become Rogue Squadron. Lt.
Tycho Celchu was one of the best. On his 21st birthday, Tycho, an
Imperial pilot, had been speaking to his family back on Alderaan
via the Imperial Holonet, when the transmission went down, a common
occurrence during the Galactic Civil War. Tycho later learned that
the Death Star had just destroyed his homeworld, family, and life.
Tycho deserted active service and disappeared into the hidden channels
that the Rebel Alliance ran. Already a formidable TIE fighter pilot
through this training with then-Captain Soontir Fel Celchu quickly
found his way into the ranks of the Rebel Fleet, being recruited
by Luke Skywalker for his unit. During the Battle of Endor, as Commander
Wedge Antilles and the Millennium Falcon attempted to destroy the
second Death Star's core, Tycho flew an A-wing into the space station's
unfinished superstructure, luring TIEs away from the critical operation.
Tycho would have preferred flying an X-wing, but he had been trained
on an A-wing, and filled in as needed for the operation's success.
When Wedge Antilles became leader of the squadron, Tycho became
Antilles' second, a position he has held ever since. Tycho carried
a love for adventure long before the destruction of Alderaan sent
him over to side with the Rebellion. Now, he feels that it is much
better channeled into the cause of freedom. An outstanding pilot
and fearless ground operative. Tycho uses his accumulated knowledge
of Imperial strategies, codes, and policies against his former masters.
For example, Tycho would never have attempted to impersonate a transferring
pilot on Cilpar, had he not known that a rural garrison would not
necessarily have the comprehensive identification techniques so
prevalent in the paranoid, central Empire. Tycho has developed an
ongoing relationship with the enigmatic Winter; although they have
spent more time together dodging blaster bolts than they have counting
stars in each other's eyes. Even in the most desperate of situations,
though, the pair has found ways to enjoy each other's company. After
volunteering for a daring covert mission to then-Imperial held Coruscant,
more commonly known as Imperial Center, in a TIE fighter, Tycho
was captured and sent to Lusankya, Ysanne Isard's dreaded prison
fortress, where minds are altered to her will.
After
his escape, Tycho was never quite trusted by New Republic intelligence
again, but was returned to Rogue Squadron because of Wedge's close
ties to him. Tycho was given only an unarmed Imperial shuttle to
fly, and was given the position of executive officer. After the
events of the Krytos Trap and the court case proving his innocence,
Tycho was accepted again as one of the Rogues, and was released
of all charges. He became Rogue Leader when Wedge Antilles left
the Squadron to create Wraith Squadron. He later retired from the
squadron and settled down.
