A Candle for Dad
Samuel H. Minnick, Jr.
August 10, 1939 - December 26, 2000
For those of you who did not know Sam Minnick, look at the trees when they change colors in the fall or white puffy clouds changing shape against a blue sky.  Look to the white-capped waves as they crest and crash upon the shore; he'll be there smiling back at you.

My father gave me many things in my life, but the most precious was his love of beauty.  Dad was an artist by trade, by profession, and by nature.  He was a full-blown romantic who could be swept up in the passion of the moment and I loved him for it.  He was stubborn, mischievous and melodramatic (smile).

Above all, he was himself: a provider, a husband, a father and a friend.
A computerized pastel rendition of a photo of my father taken in December 1995. Bella, the kitten on his lap, was not yet a year old.
I could tell you of his bad puns and his obsession with clipping coupons and finding food sales.  I could give you examples of how he was a perfectionist when it came to painting (be it a picture, a model boat, a concert banner or the living room ceiling).  I could describe the glint in his eyes when he teased or told stories, or how he always had a spare hankie "just in case."
I could tell you how bravely he faced his diagnosis and treatment of cancer; how he feared for his family more than himself.  In the midst of his fear and pain he did not want those who loved him to suffer.
My father was a gentle man -- intelligent, loving and generous to a fault.  He gave of himself every day of his life and his lessons of generosity and love continue in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.
We miss you Daddy.
