Roger Ramjet Goes Ouch!
We continued onwards from Fort Bragg to finish up the final leg of our tour of Highway 1. Sean and Bobby warned us green riders about the road ahead, which was full of decreasing radius turns. I decided to stay well back of the pack in case that pesky leg cramp came back again. The road started out innocently enough like before; smooth, well marked, with fast and slow sections. The scenery never once disappointed as it went from beautiful to more beautiful. When the road turned inland, the scenery changed to Redwood forest, which sheltered the road on both sides. Sun light could barely peak through the giant trees and the road changed its consistency and began to climb up at first, then descended down with decreasing radius turn after another decreasing radius turn. It was just a continuous left, right, left, right. Riders needed to be alert and focused on this section of Highway 1 as we neared Leggett. I got passed one rider a ways back and decided to stop for a quick pic of the place and wait for him. As I stood there taking pictures, it was earily quiet and the forest went on forever. I can understand how the Big Foot myth can emerge in an area like this. Unfortunately, we had our first mishap of the day when Roger and his ZZR1200 kissed the pavement. He ran wide on one of the turns and lowsided into a gravel shoulder, breaking his collarbone and ruining his bike. Bobby, who was a paramedic was all over him and all went well. Roger got picked up and brought to Leggett by a kind woman driving by on her car. Unbelievably, two other vehicles stopped to see what was going on but REFUSED to give Roger a ride to Leggett. Dave rode Rogers damaged ZZR1200 to a nearby fire station for later pick up, while Roger went to the hospital in Garberville for treatment. |
