Grand Canyon Trip:  May 2002  Continued
The next leg was 85 miles on Highway 95 to Yuma.  Riding 85 miles of nothing but desert is quite peaceful, mostly boring, but a little alarming all at the same time.  95 is a little used road so if anything happened to me here, well, just send the recovery team for my body and whats left of my motorcycle.  I kept the speeds around 90 mph to conserve fuel.  I could have gone all out but that would not have been prudent.  I stopped about halfway to re-apply sun block on my face, drink more water, wet my neck towel, and rest my butt.  I passed by the US Army Proving Grounds where new as well as secret Army weapons are tested.  There was no question about where it was since the entrance to it was guarded by what looked like two brand new 155 mm artillery pieces with signs on it saying dont even THINK about touching them!  Okay!  I was too hot and bothered to take a pic although Im kicking myself now for not doing it.  So I kept on riding and piling on the miles on that empty desert road.  It was hot.  The road was straight as an arrow.  And I began wondering about the condition of my BT020s and my chain and my engine.  How were they holding up to the heat and high speed cruising for long periods?  Turned out they all handled it just fine and there was nothing for me to worry about.  Thank goodness for modern motorcycles.

Left:  Highway 71 was like this for miles and miles.  Not another soul around and straight as an arrow.  Sometimes I questioned my sanity as to why I rode hundreds of miles just to encounter roads like these!

Well did I know this was only the beginning!

Right:  Yes.  That was a shade!

At over 100 degrees F under the sun, this spidery desert tree actually offered some real relief from the unrelenting sun.  I was able to drink and eat in relative comfort!

Left:  Highway 95 headed south towards Yuma, Arizona.

85 miles of empty desert.  And I thought Highway 71 was insanely lonely!

My only companion here was a lone Coyote crossing the road and wondering what a fool I was for riding alone on this road!
