| Grand Canyon Trip: May 2002 Continued |
Left: Sunset Crater National Monument located in the south-eastern area of the Coconino Plateau. 900 years ago a volcano erupted there and created this landscape. The black ash and dried up lava was still all around the area. |
Right: Awe! Where's that sly smile? Yours trully at Sunset Crater Monument. The temperature was just about to cool down soon after this picture was taken. Otherwise it was an all day barbecue at close to 100 degrees F! Notice the black ash in the background. Only today is the vegetation reclaiming the land the volcano took from them 900 years before. |
| After Sunset Crater National Monument, it was a smooth ride down to Flagstaff. Flagstaff itself is still located at high elevation, about 7,000 feet ASL so power was still down for all of us. Also, it was getting quite cold as we arrived right at sunset. Flagstaff is a big city and quite busy with commuter traffic. Arizona State University is located there so there were lots of young people out and about. We had quite an issue choosing a place to stay and even got lost at one point but at Mats insistence, we finally found the right place at a Comfort Inn located away from the main highway. Turned out Mat was absolutely right in complaining about the right place as we were quite happy to lagger our bikes in for the evening with rooms directly adjacent to where our bikes were parked. The rooms were also very nice and located in a quiet spot. Perfect! Thanks Mat. We covered about 200 miles during that day. However, there was a whole lot of sight seeing and shopping which explained the nearly 12 hours of on and off riding and walking around. It was quite a relief to finally find a bed for the night as well as a nice relaxing shower to clean up! The Remains Of The Day After freshening up, the rest of the gang decided to take a Taxi to town and get shit-faced.again. I really didnt feel like doing that as I had a long ride ahead of me the next day. I declined the invitation although I wanted to go with them. Turned out it was the right decision. I needed the rest and I needed to do some minor maintenance on the Bandit. I cleaned and lubed its chain and topped up the engine oil. I also cleaned up my leathers, helmet, bags, and got ready for the ride home. By that time it was 11 PM and I was pretty tired. I heard the guys arrive back at their room at close to 2PM. Party animals! Probably went to a strip joint or something. |
Left: Matt doing his pose again. The lava rocks at Sunset Crater were not safe from molestation. Right after this picture was taken, Matt fell off this rock pile and down intot he cliff. Just kidding! He almost fell. And the rockpile was only 3 feet high! |
