Day 2:  Saturday, May 26th
Woke up early and had the hotels continental breakfast, which consisted of buttered muffins & orange juice.  It was actually a healthy breakfast and it satisfied my hunger.  I med Dean & Patty outside my hotel at 9AM as agreed, and after a brief talk, we took off for the Monterey Peninsula.  The sky was grey all over with no hint of blue sky anywhere.  The temperature was also pretty cold with a very slight drizzle.  At least the road surface was dry.

We rode up PCH, taking it easy most of the way.  There were hardly any other vehicles around us.  I guess it was too early for the tourists.  We passed by San Simeon Point, which had a couple of large motor homes parked by its dirt parking lot.  Motor homes really irritate me since many of them hold back traffic on twisty roads, and their drivers are usually clueless or careless.  Sometimes both!  And there they were parked on a beautiful spot overlooking the Pacific, generally degrading the beauty around them.  Grrrrr!

Around Point Piedras Blancas (Spanish for White Rocks), we passed by a small single story Motel with a 76 gas station next to it.  The gas prices were in the $3 per gallon range!  We continued on to Point Sierra Nevada where PCH opened up to this very long straight leading towards the Santa Lucia Mountain Range.  The scene was so beautiful even with the cloudy sky.  It was right out of a picture calendar.

After this long straight, PCH began its twists and turns as it climbed up towards Ragged Point.  Some turns had pebbles and sand on them so we approached each one cautiously.  Dean had Patty in back so he was even more conservative than me.  We stopped at Ragged Point Inn to take some pictures, and admire the scenery.  Dean needed to top up his fuel tank so he paid the outrageous prices for gas.

It surprised me that Patty didnt even bother visiting the gift shops.  I know that would have been the first place my wife would have gone to!  Patty was a good sport and rolled along with the punches.  She seemed to be enjoying the ride as much as Dean and I, and she wasnt too interested in going to the local tourist traps to shop.  I liked that.

Hey Dean!  Do you know how much that gas is costing you?
