TIPS FOR SUCCESS

THE CHART IS ONLY A POTENTIAL BLUEPRINT

The real key to success begins with the awareness
that the natal chart is not a magic mirror which
reflects every detail of one's character and life.
It is only a potential and optional "blueprint."
Many great astrologers in the past have cautioned
that the chart is not a map of one's fate or un-
alterable future, but a map with many roads and
forks from which to choose. It is up to the native
of the chart to live up to the potential of the
chart. The chart by itself, regardless of how good
or bad the factors are, does not mean those things
have to reflect in the individual's life.

SUCCESS TIPS: CHART AS POTENTIAL BLUEPRINT 2

"The stars only incline, they do not compel."

The above quote was a traditional saying used by
astrologers according to James E. Lewis, author of
the Astrology Encyclopedia. This adage was aimed
at scoffers who often said--and still do--"What is
the point of looking into your chart if everything
in it is going to come true anyway, and you can't
do anything about it!" That, of course, is wrong
and just reveals complete ignorance of astrology.

In reality, nothing in the chart has to come true.
Some factors reflect in the native's life, others
do not. There may also be things in the native's
life that are not reflected in the chart factors,
usually attributed to external influences.

SUCCESS TIPS 3

SOME FACTORS AND EXPRESSIONS
DO NOT REFLECT, DUE TO EXTERNAL INFLUENCES

The natal chart is not a mirror reflection. Not
everything must reflect 100%. Some factors do not
reflect at all, often because they are not brought
out during the early years or simply because they
are blocked by external influences.

There are many non-astrological influences that
can block or inhibit the potential expressions and
talents indicated in the chart.

What kind of external reason can prevent factors
in the natal chart from being expressed? Various
kinds: social systems, environments, traditions,
families, religions, institutions, spouses, etc..

SUCCESS TIPS: EXTERNAL INFLUENCES 4

For centuries in the past, when society was mostly
patriarchal, women could not reflect the potential
talents in their charts. Women were forced to be
submissive and behave with unreasonable respect
to men. They were confined to narrow areas such as
cooking, household and child raising work. They
were not allowed to attend universities and become
doctors, lawyers, merchants, artists, composers or
many of the other professions.

Today, women are allowed to work in almost all the
areas once dominated by men. Clearly, in the many
millions of women's charts in the past there were
certainly the same number of potential talents for
doctors, lawyers, engineers, administrators, etc.,
as today. It would be absurd to think that so many
charts would have only factors indicating a talent
for just housework. So, factors can be blocked.
SUCCESS TIPS: EXTERNAL INFLUENCES 5

But there are numerous other examples of the same
problem of external influences hindering potential
chart expressions, which affects men as well.

For example, in most of the coastline areas of the
world the main profession is fishing. The men go
out to sea and fish and preoccupy themselves with
all the activities related to fishing, boat main-
tenance and repair, etc. It is still very unlikely
for a son to say to his father that he suddenly
wants to break the family tradition and become a
ballet dancer, even if his chart indicates all the
potential for a great ballet dancer. Generation
after generation, the same profession was passed
on from father to son, which forced all the other
members of the family to conform to the fishing
business. Another case where factors are blocked.

SUCCESS TIPS: EXTERNAL INFLUENCES 6

The problem of external influence on the chart can
also be found in rural farming communities, where
farmers make farmers. Along with the profession,
came the corresponding agricultural personality.

But this problem also exists in concealed form in
all communities and professional backgrounds, and
in all stages of life. The point is that anyone
or thing trying to influence another person's life
is already interfering with the natural propensity
of that person's chart for specific traits, talent
and profession.

Many parents try to discourage their children from
creative fields and force them into those that are
secure and well-established.

SUCCESS TIPS: EXTERNAL INFLUENCES 7

The problem begins when the child is forced to act
and think like the parents. This conditioning goes
on through the later stages of early life when
siblings, close friends, idols and teachers can
have a strong influence on some individuals. Often
the person who has adopted someone's character
traits tends to act unnaturally and pretentiously.

In youth, it is common for the passive person to
be coerced by the dominant one in a close friend-
ship by adopting the same dressing style, hair
style, behavior and attitude. In adult life, the
passive person may also copy the other person's
lifestyle and philosophy. In effect, the dominant
friend is blocking his passive friend's potential
chart expressions, usually unintentionally.

SUCCESS TIPS: EXTERNAL INFLUENCES 8

In her biography, Elvis and Me, Priscilla Presley
wrote about how her dominant husband treated her:

"He taught me everything: how to dress, how to
walk, how to apply make-up and wear my hair,
how to behave, how to return love--his way.
Over the years, he became my father, husband,
  and very nearly God."

In this case, Priscilla's chart had no chance of
revealing its potential in reality, because Elvis
never gave her the chance to be herself. After he
died, only then did she begin to discover who she
really was. Today, she reflects her true nature,
working as a model and actress. This case proves
that the natal chart's factors are only potential
expressions which can be easily blocked by various
external influences, such as a dominant spouse.
SUCCESS TIPS: EXTERNAL INFLUENCES 9

Well known American astrologer Noel Tyl stressed
that the chart was only one of many factors that
influenced the native's character and potential.
He emphasized the importance of the parental and
social background. Dane Rudhyar echoed similar
views, and added that people were also conditioned
by established ideologies, politics and religion.

Hereditary traits are yet other external factors.
Sometimes, some are reflected by factors in the
chart, but others are not.

There is enough evidence strongly suggesting that
the natal chart cannot explain every trait, event
and circumstance in the native's life. It is wrong
to believe that the chart can explain everything
in a person's life, as some astrologers believe.
There's just no evidence to support that belief.
SUCCESS TIPS: EXTERNAL INFLUENCES 10

All this raises questions about testing astrology
by analyzing charts of famous people.

For the reasons mentioned, the results can never
be highly consistent. Certainly, famous people do
not reflect all the factors in their natal charts
and probably express various external influences
not reflected in their charts. So, attempting to
explain why a famous person turned out to be an
actor does not always have to show up very clearly
in his or her natal chart. It all depends how good
the actor really was. Very often, actors were only
in that work because their parents were actors.
But they may have been better at some other work.
So, "acting" would not reflect in those charts.

More often than not, the person's character rather
than his profession reflect the natal chart.
SUCCESS TIPS: EXTERNAL INFLUENCES 11

So, when analyzing a natal chart:

1. Assume that not all factors in the chart are
expressed properly (or were expressed, if the
subject is no longer alive), or up to their
fullest potential, or even expressed at all.

2. Which astrological factors are reflected in the
natal chart? Are they expressed in a positive
or negative manner (a planet position, aspect,
etc, can be expressed in a positive or negative
way). If some are expressed negatively, effort
can be made to express the chart factors in a
positive manner. If expressed positively, are
they done so to the fullest potential. If not,
more effort can optimize the expression.

SUCCESS TIPS: EXTERNAL INFLUENCES 12

3. Are all the factors in the chart expressed by
the individual? If not, they are either blocked
(or were) by some external circumstances, or
never given the chance to be expressed.

4. Are any traits of the native not evident in the
chart's factors? If so, they may have come from
parents or other influential persons, or even
   inherited genetically from distant ancestors.
If such expressions cause problems, then effort
should be made to eliminate them.

It's not how close the chart describes the native,
but how close the native should reflect the chart.

The more the native expresses his or her own natal
factors in the best way, and not someone else's,
the more successful the native becomes.

OUTSTANDING FEATURES IN THE CHART

Although many books and computer charts generally
follow the same pattern of chart interpretation,
first with the Ascendant, Sun and Moon positions
in the signs and houses, and then the main planet
rulers, most significant aspects and finally the
rest of the factors and aspects, this often buries
the few key factors that describe the main or most
typical expressions of the native.

Often, the most outstanding factor in the chart
reflects the equally outstanding expression in the
native's life. The expression can be the typical
behavioral characteristic, main activity, interest
or preoccupation, and work or profession.

SUCCESS TIPS: OUTSTANDING FEATURES 14

For example, the first thing that strikes the eye
when viewing Elizabeth Taylor's chart, the famous
Hollywood actress, is the Venus-Uranus conjunction
squaring Pluto. This is very simple arithmetic.
Venus is about beautiful things and relationships.
Uranus involves the unusual, independence, change,
turbulence and innovation. Put the two together
and you get "unusual beauty, turbulent marriage or
many marriages, unusual mates." Liz Taylor also
loves diamonds, wealth and power. This reflects
the double square to Pluto perfectly. And that's
the punch line of Liz Taylor's life. The fact that
she also reflects her Pisces-Sun is fine, but so
do millions of other people.

OUTSTANDING FEATURES 15

One of the most outstanding things in a chart is
the conjunction, and certainly, one of the most
powerful factors.

We could choose a profession where Mercury plays
a significant role, such as in journalism, and see
how it connects with other planets. In this field,
all of Mercury's characteristics are used to the
fullest: reading, writing, talking, travel, and
thinking.

Conjunctions with Mercury would be anticipated.

Outstanding features can also offer insights into
possible associations between specific professions
and astrological factors.

OUTSTANDING FEATURES 16

In Astroscan, files are classified by all kinds of
categories. One of them is profession. This is not
to suggest that professions are always reflected
in the chart. As the famous researcher, Gauquelin
found, that it was the main characteristics of the
native that led to a profession where such traits
were an asset. Moreover, Gauquelin restricted his
research to planet positions in relation to the
Angles.

For example, a list of famous journalists, known
interviewers and news announcers can show common
factors, especially communicative ones, such as
whether Mercury is involved in some outstanding
situation, and if it is, with what other planets.

OUTSTANDING FEATURES 17

As it turns out, all the persons in the file have
a Mercury conjunction. This clearly proves that
Mercury lives up to its traditional meaning and
consistently reflects Mercury-related professions.

OUTSTANDING FEATURES 18

Similarly, the Venus conjunctions are found in the
charts of musicians, dancers, actors and artists.
Mars is more involved in the conjunction in charts
of dancers, Neptune in charts of musicians and
artists. It should be added that an outstanding
feature can also be any kind of aspect as long as
it stands out in some way, by being accurate or in
a double aspect. Outstanding features can also be
emphasized planets, signs, handles, apex planets,
aspect patterns, and stelliums. For example, the
three famous pop-music performers, Madonna, Mick
Jagger and Michael Jackson, all have stelliums in
Leo, which also confirms Leo's traits.

Madonna Ciccone . . . . . . . . . STELLIUM IN LEO
Mick Jagger . . . . . . . . . STELLIUM IN LEO
Michael Jackson . . . . . . . . . STELLIUM IN LEO

POLYSEMANTIC SYMBOLS

Another pitfall often made is to read only one or
a few meanings in an astrological factor. This may
result from under-estimating the extremely immense
polysemantic nature of astrological symbols.

For example, the factor "Moon conjunct Saturn"
consists of three basic components, the Moon, the
conjunction aspect, and Saturn. It would be a loss
to limit the interpretation of this factor to just
a few meanings. One might easily see the blending
(conjunction) of emotions (Moon) and restrictions
(Saturn) to produce reserved emotional expression.
But the Moon represents symbolically over a dozen
fundamental meanings and even more related items.
The same applies to each of the other two factors,
Saturn, and the conjunction.
SUCCESS TIPS: POLYSEMANTIC SYMBOLS 21

Certainly, one of the basic meanings of the Moon
is emotions, but there are more, such as moods,
comfort, sense or feeling of security, the home,
family, parents, the mother, nurturing needs, care
and protection, domestic needs, childhood events,
past-conditioning, sentimentality, intimacy, women
and femininity, imagination, the subconscious,
auto-reflexes, intuition, compassion, emotional
drive, health, etc.

The first meaning of Saturn that comes to mind is
"limits" or "restrictions." But this too is only
one of many. We also have conservativeness, focus,
concentration, reservation, preservation, control,
rules, laws, authority, the father, management,
structure, responsibility, tradition, the old way,
principles, wisdom, experience, discipline, hard
lesson, method, seriousness, concern, fear, etc.
SUCCESS TIPS: POLYSEMANTIC SYMBOLS 22

The conjunction basically means a merging or blend
of planetary energies. It can be as harmonious as
it can be difficult. Sometimes the meanings can be
dissolved into a third entirely different meaning,
much like mixing yellow and blue to produce green.
In a conjunction one planetary energy can dominate
the other or enhance it. When Saturn is conjunct
the Moon, we have meanings such as emotions under
control, reserved feelings, not vulnerable to mood
swings, common sense, practical hunches, strong
and dominating mother image or sense of women who
control men, ambitious emotional drive, a need for
control in the home, or the home controls you, an
ability to use emotional tone in communication to
persuade or manipulate others, a nurturing need to
support the family to a level of high achievement,
natural love of order, principles, laws, rules and
established way of living, etc.
SUCCESS TIPS: POLYSEMANTIC SYMBOLS 23

The method for devising meanings in any planetary
combination is always the same. All the keyword
meanings for each planet are listed. Each keyword
meaning in one planetary list is connected with a
keyword meaning in the second planetary list. For
example, if three keyword meanings are listed for
Moon and Saturn, then there are a total of nine
possible combinations: 1. Feelings - Restrictions,
2. Feelings - Rules, 3. Feelings - Control, 4.
Moods - Restrictions, 5. Moods - Rules, 6. Moods -
Control, 7. Mother - Restrictions, 8. Mother -
Rules, 9. Mother - Control.

The following table gives a visual sense of the
hundreds of meanings made possible by connecting

These are just some examples of pairs of Moon and
Saturn meanings. They can each be expanded into
full sentences that provide more coherent meaning.
For example, "Women - Control" can be "Women in
one's life seem to have much control," or "there
may be a need for a woman who is in control," or
"a drive to control women," or "control is a bone
of contention with women," etc. So each pair alone
branches out to more meanings.
SUCCESS TIPS: POLYSEMANTIC SYMBOLS 27

When the keyword-pairs are considered within the
context of their sign and house positions, and the
many other related factors such as aspects, then
the list of keyword meanings can be enormous.

Again, this underlines the idea that the chart is
much like a roadmap, showing a multitude of paths
that can be taken toward various destinations. It
proves that astrology is not about fate, or some
specific un-alterable future. Each factor in the
chart contains many, many meanings, and no one
can ever be certain which meanings will stand out
in the person's life. The traditional method for
getting a general idea as to which keywords may
be more effective is by looking for similar or
supporting keyword meanings from other factors in
the chart. This is known as synthesis.
