Ŀ
              MAIN MENU: GET CHART

GET CHART

The first item in the main menu speaks for itself:
GET CHART gets the chart data stored in the file,
and draws the chart on the screen.

Selecting this choice shows a list of names in the
form of a menu. Selecting a name lists the input
data. At this point, there is an option of either
continuing and displaying the new chartwheel, or
returning to the list to select another name.

Once the chartwheel is on the screen the main menu
can be brought back by pressing the SPACE bar or
clicking on the RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON.

GET CHART - 2

1. Place highlight bar on button "GET CHART" in
main menu and press ENTER or click the LEFT
MOUSE BUTTON. This action will show a list of
    names.

2. Move the highlight bar over the list with the
up/down cursor or scan through more sets of
names with the left/right cursor or by click-
ing with the left mouse button on either of
the two arrows at the bottom of the list.

3. Select a name and press ENTER or click with
the LEFT MOUSE BUTTON to display the natal
data and once again to display on the screen.
To return to a previous step, press SPACE or
    the RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON.

Ŀ
              MAIN MENU: LOAD FILE

LOAD FILE

This is another way of getting a chartwheel on the
screen. If the natal input (represented by a name)
is not listed in the current file in GET CHART,
then it can be retrieved directly from the file.

Once a natal input has been selected from the file
then that file becomes the current file and can be
accessed directly from GET CHART the next time.
This eliminates an extra step or more.

The acronym "N1" stands for Natal (file) #1. The
input for any current event is also considered to
be natal data, or "birthtime data of an event."

LOAD FILE - 2

1. Place highlight bar on button "LOAD FILE" in
main menu and press ENTER or click the LEFT
MOUSE BUTTON. This action will show a list of
    filenames: N1 to N10, N# TO N#.

2. Move the highlight bar over the list with the
up/down cursor or by moving the mouse forward
or inward. Select a file by pressing ENTER or
the LEFT MOUSE BUTTON. This will show a list
    of names (inputs).

3. If the file has more than ten names then press
the RIGHT or LEFT CURSOR (arrow) keys to see
more names in the same file, or hit the '>>>'
    or '<<<' buttons.

Ŀ
               MAIN MENU: VIEW ALL

VIEW ALL

The third selection in the main menu brings back
the full chartwheel display, showing the planetary
positions and aspects. This is useful after going
back to the menu, and then returning to the full
display. The alternative method is by using GET
CHART, but this involves more steps, and more time
on slow computers.

Proc.: Select VIEW ALL to view the astrological
        information on the chartwheel.

(Press SPACE or RT.M.B. for menu.)

Ŀ
               MAIN MENU: NEW CHART

NEW CHART / INPUT DATA

This selection calls up the utilities for creating
and managing charts and chart files. In INPUT DATA
a new chart or file can be created, copied, moved,
changed, or erased.

The INPUT DATA manager also provides utilities for
viewing info on natal files, changing file labels
and searching data in various ways.

For details on these utilities use the F1 key when
using the INPUT DATA menu.

Ŀ
                MAIN MENU: HOUSES

HOUSES

This selection enables changes in dealing with the
houses.

Eight popular house systems are available and two
composites of combinations of houses: 1) Koch and
Placidus, and 2) house systems 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

For more info about houses, use the F1 key on the
individual choices in the HOUSE menu.

Proc.: Select Koch for Koch Houses.

Ŀ
              MAIN MENU: HELP/INFO

HELP / INFO

This selection provides general and detailed help
on how to use Astroscan, some of which is found in
the help screens called with the F1 key. It calls
up a menu which offers specific help on:

    MAIN MENU
    STARTING (for first time users)
    CONTROLS (mouse and keyboard commands)
PROCEDURES (making a chart, analysis, etc.)

NOTE: Place the cursor on any 3D button in
the main menu and press F1 (function key).

Ŀ
                MAIN MENU: REPORT

REPORT

This choice produces a report of all natal chart
data: birth data, planet positions in signs and
houses, chart emphasis based on the analysis used
in Astroscan. The report is listed on the screen.

The report is written to an ascii text file which
is named "Report.txt" by default. The filename can
be renamed using any extension, edited in any text
editor or sent to the printer.

There are three sorted aspect lists which can be
selected individually or in any combination. The
left margin can be placed anywhere in the first 15
columns.
Ŀ
               MAIN MENU: SYMBOLS

SYMBOLS (HOT KEY IN VIEW ALL MODE: F3)

This choice shows the descriptions and meanings of
all the astrological symbols used in Astroscan.

The colors used for each symbol are also symbolic.
The colors of the zodiac symbols are based on the
elements: red is fire, green is earth, air is vi-
olet, and water is blue.

The colors of the planets represent the range of
light in terms of heat, vibrancy and visibility.
The planets closer to the Sun are yellow, those
furthest from the Sun are violet. The aspects are
broken down into 3 general colors: hard are blue,
soft are green, and violet are esoteric.

                 HELP: STARTING

USING ASTROSCAN FOR THE FIRST TIME

Astroscan is easy to use if the user is familiar
with astrology. The menu buttons have labels which
speak for themselves, and which represent typical
concepts in astrological procedures. The best way
to learn is to place the highlight bar on a menu
item, press the F1 key and then try it out, or by
using HELP in the menus.

Basically, Astroscan is designed for easy natal
chart analysis which involves the typical routine
of inputing the birth data, erecting a chart, and
then analyzing it. In Astroscan, the analysis is
done automatically. In most other programs, each
part of the analysis requires many steps.

left side of the screen will clear, and the
cursor will appear in the top window for First
Name. Type the first name and press ENTER.

3. Proceed to fill in the requested data in each
window, always pressing ENTER to record it.

4. Use F1 at any entry for more specific help.

SORT will change the order of the aspect list
(lower right section). The command works as a
toggle function, so that pressing ENTER again

sorting order sorts the aspects by planet, the
other by orb. After the aspects are sorted,

list. To sort again, repeat SPACE and step 1.

Sorting by orb shows the most accurate aspects
at the top of the list. Sorting by planet is
suited for viewing aspects from the Sun, Moon
and personal planet point of view.

2. ASPECT TYPE

Select ASPECT TYPE to view specific aspects
and aspect groups (all or hard or soft, etc).

way of analyzing charts, but it does provide
assistance in analysis by eliminating certain
aspects. The smaller the orb, the less aspects
show up in the chart. But when using ANALYSIS
the #50 orb-set must be used so that patterns
can be correctly analyzed; Astroscan has made
this automatic to prevent such problems.

Ŀ
                   MISCELLANEOUS

Astroscan has many other features that may not be
immediately evident. While some of these features
can be found in menus, others are hidden in the
form of keyboard commands.

ALT CHART (N/A)

This area provides alternate ways of examining the
chart. Some functions allow the user to rectify or
quickly set up another chart without having to go
into INPUT DATA's new input section, which is only
worth the more detailed entries if the chart needs
to be "saved." Although, any chart rectified here
can be transferred to new input, and adjusted for
extra details (such as name, city...) and saved.

MISCELLANEOUS - 2

MISCELLANEOUS - 3

Alt Chart: INCREMENT (N/A)

The INCREMENT function is useful for rectification
and observing planets in motion through the chart.
This helps to look into the future or past without
having to re-enter data each time a new chart is
created. Conjunctions can be followed (or aspect)
forwards or backwards in time if the synodic cycle
(tropical period, not sidereal) is entered. Speeds
of planets can be observed more easily by turning
on the perpetual motion with ">" or "<". See the
individual help screens in the Alt Chart menu.

MISCELLANEOUS - 4

Chart views: INCREMENT KB (N/A)

The INCREMENT KB function allows for increments to
be controlled directly from the keyboard without
having to re-enter the increment menu each time an
increment change needs to be made. By typing "XD"
and a number and ENTER, for example, changes the
the increment by the specified number of days, and
"XMI" plus a number will change the increment by
the number of minutes, "XM" + # changes the months
and "XY" + # changes the years.

It should be noted that the increment changes made
from the keyboard cancel the previous increment
setting.

MISCELLANEOUS - 5

Chart views: INCREMENT MO (N/A)

The INCREMENT MO function allows for increments to
be mixed so as to create compound increments. This
is useful when following synodic periods which are
always a mix of years, months, days and minutes.
The menu is also designed for entering values with
a mouse. This function is not recommended for use
with pure values such as days or months. It should
be noted that increments remain effective when re-
entering Astroscan the next time.

Chart views: HOUSES ON/OFF

The HOUSES ON/OFF function speaks for itself. It
adds or removes houses on the chart wheel.

MISCELLANEOUS - 6

Chart views: RECENT CHARTS (N/A)

The RECENT CHARTS function automatically stores
the last chart loaded with the GET CHART function.
The chart data is saved to the top of the file,
where it can be easily found. The system operates
according to the "tray stack" method, in which the
newest charts are stacked on top of the pile and
the oldest charts drop off the bottom (#100+). The
file used for this purpose is reserved, so nothing
can be overwritten.

Chart views: HOUSE CYCLE (N/A)

The HOUSE CYCLE feature lets the user select the
house system by cycling through all the systems.

MISCELLANEOUS - 7

Chart views: FIND CHART D. (N/A)

The FIND CHART D. function is a detailed search
algorithm that lets the user find any chart in any
file by specifying specific characters or numbers.
Charts can be located by letters of a name, parts
of a date, time, am or pm, etc.

Chart views: SOUTH ZODIAC (N/A)

and the South Hemisphere.

The Tropical Zodiac begins at 0 degrees Aries on
the 1st day of Spring, and the four cardinal signs
begin on the starting dates of the four seasons.
Since the seasons are reversed in the South Hemis-
phere, the tropical zodiac should be as well. For
this reason the zodiac for the South Hemisphere is
added in Astroscan. See Zodiac in Help of the Main
Menu for more detailed explanations. Charts in the
S.H. can be drawn with the N.H. zodiac or the S.H.
zodiac.
N.H. ZODIAC 2

James R. Lewis writes the following information
in the Astrology Encyclopedia (1994, Gale Research
Detroit, MI USA, ISDN: 0-8103-9460-X) about which
zodiac should be used in the Southern Hemisphere.

" The reversal of seasons that occurs in the
Southern Hemisphere has raised certain questions
about how the standard tropical zodiac should
be applied below the equator. In particular,
there is much seasonal symbolism associated
with the signs: pioneering Aries is the sign of
spring, cold restrictive Capricorn is the sign
of winter, and so forth. In Southern latitudes,
  these associations become meaningless. Some
astrologers have proposed shifting the zodiac
by 180 degrees in the Southern Hemisphere. Thus
someone born on November 2 in Argentina would be
  a Taurus rather than a Scorpio. "
