                                 INTRODUCTION
                                 ------------

Welcome to The Astrologer's Assistant. I hope you will find the program
both enjoyable to use and beneficial to your work, for that was my intent
in writing it. Specifically, this program was designed with two purposes
in mind: an initial software tool to introduce novices to the world of
astrological computing, and an interim package for amateurs on tight
budgets, while they acquire the funds to purchase more sophisticated
astrological software. I'm sure you want to know what it does and what is
required to make it work, so let's review that first.

NOTE: THIS IS THE SHORT VERSION OF THE MANUAL! The full manual is
provided with the registered version. The online help system
holds any information not included in this manual. I have
abbeviated the unregistered version of the manual to preclude
additional costs when downloading the program from online
       services.

1.0 - System Requirements
-------------------------

The Astrologer's Assistant requires the following hardware/software
in order to function properly.

o 640K of RAM - The program uses overlays, but runs better with more than
512K of memory. Aspects to midpoints are not possible with less than
  640K.

o EGA or VGA graphics card - An EGA compatible card is required for the
Chart Wheel and Orbital Map. The Graphic Ephemeris requires a VGA card.
MCGA, Hercules, and PC3270 support is also available, but these cards
MUST be able to achieve at least EGA 640x348 resolution.

o A hard disk - The program and support files almost fill a 1.44MB floppy
  disk.

o IBM XT, or better, compatible machine - The program will work on an XT or
AT class machine. Use of a math co-processor is not required, but will be
  utilized if available.

o MS-DOS v3.3 Plus or better - The program has been tested for versions
3.3 Plus, 4.01, 5.0, and 6.0, and should run on later versions. It may
even run on previous versions, but I make no guarantees.

o COMMAND.COM must be in your path or on the current drive.

o HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE are recommended. The program places the
overlay file in EMS these two files are included in your CONFIG.SYS
file. Otherwise, the program swaps overlays to/from your disk, which
  seriously impacts system performance.

1.2 - What The Program Won't Do
-------------------------------

The Astrologer's Assistant does not provide the following:

o Chart and aspect interpretations - This program is only an astrological
tool, and assumes you have the knowledge and resources available to
  implement it.

o Latitude and longitude coordinates - I suggest you get both the American
and the World Atlas by Neil F. Michelsen. They are published by Astro
Computing Services and distributed by Para Research Inc.

o Time zone information - You can get this information from the American
  or World Atlas.

1.3 - Legal Notice
------------------

Now, a word about copyrights, distribution, and legal stuff.

I retain all rights to this program, commercial or otherwise, which means
you may not sell it, for whatever reason, nor include it as part of
another software package from which you would make any type of profit.

This program was originally written using algorithms taken from Michael
Erlewine's book, "Manual of Computer Programming for Astrologers."
However, due to copyright limitations I have reworked the entire program
to make use of my own algorithms based on data that is available to the
public from the United States Naval Observatory and various astronomical,
astrological, and trigonomical texts. To the best of my knowledge, no
part of this program contains any copyrighted, licensed, or trademarked
materials.

The Orbital Projection Maps are also based on algorithms provided by the
United States Naval Observatory and various astronomical, astrological, and
trigonomical texts. These algorithms are used by NASA and the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory and should NOT be confused with Astro*Carto*Graphy(TM)
maps which are registered service marks of Astro*Carto*Graphy, founded by
Jim Lewis. I have taken great pains to keep my maps as dissimilar as
possible from the pioneering work of Mr. Lewis.

Use of this software constitutes an agreement between myself and the user
that I will not be held liable for any direct, incidental, or
consequential damages, including loss of profits, resulting from the use
of or the inability to use this software.

The Astrologer's Assistant (C) 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, is provided
to you as shareware through the courtesy of Al Andersen.

Unregistered copies of this program may be freely uploaded to any bulletin
board or online service. Shareware distributors may include the
unregistered version of Astrologer's Assistant in their catalogs, but may
only charge customers whatever distribution costs they may incur; i.e.,
cost of the disk the Astrologer's Assistant is placed on and applicable
postage and handling fees.

1.5 - Registration Information
------------------------------

This program is shareware. That means you are required to register the
program if you wish to continue using it. If you have an unregistered
version, you may make unlimited use of it for a period of 60 days from the
first time you run it -- sort of a try it before you buy it. You are
obligated to register the program after the 60-day trial period is over.

Registration of this program, for a nominal fee of $40.00, entitles you to
use the program free of any guilt or loss of sleep that normally occurs
from running unregistered software. You will also receive newest version,
one free update, and a considerable discount for future updates. Note
that this fee is reduced to $20.00 if you are a registered student. Proof
of student registration for the current semester must accompany your
registration request to qualify for this discount.

Your registration request should include the following information:

INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Enter your name as you want it to appear in the About box that
comes up when the program is initially run. 25 characters maximum!

2) Enter your mailing address, where you want the program sent to.

3) Select the size diskette you wish to receive the program on.
Sorry, 5-1/4" 360K floppies are not available.

4) Enter the type of system you wish the program to run on. If you
chose 808x or 80186, the program will run on any system. Otherwise,
it will only run on 80286 systems or better. The advantage to the
80286, 80386, 80486, and pentium versions are that they are slightly
faster and slightly smaller in size.

5) Enter the speed of your CPU. It doesn't make any difference to the
program, but I like to keep track of such things for my database,
   should any problems occur.

6) If you want a protected mode version, you need an 80386, 80486, or
pentium CPU. Protected mode versions may work on an 80286, but I don't
guarantee it. If you don't know what protected mode is, select NO.

7) If you want an unregistered version included when I send you your
registered version, mark this box YES. You can upload unregistered
versions to other BBS's or give it to your friends.

8) Include proof of student discount if you indicate YES.

1.6 - Special Thanks
--------------------

Last, but not least, I'd like to thank those who have made this endeavor
possible.

o Sue Thornburg, whose love and friendship helped me through
     the long nights at the keyboard <insert Muskrat noises here>;

   o Theda Adcock, who is guilty of starting me on this project;

o Ed Perrone, who showed me what I had been missing on GEnie
     all this time!

o Mike Erlewine and Matrix Software, for making public the algorithms
     from which I first learned about astrological programming;

There have been many others who have contributed to making the
Astrologer's Assistant what it is today. Because the list is constantly
growing, I no longer have room for individual kudos', but nonetheless, I
think everyone should know who you are <grin>!

Special thanks to: Anne L. Noss, Beverly Parks, David Barnett, Jenny Ruhl,
Ken Saunders, Lou Wilkinson, Mark Hochman, Mark Mittelstaedt, Mark Webb,
Matthew Quellas, Mike Davies, Ostewart Midwinter, Randy Harwood, Ronnie
Beer, Theresa C. Kinney, and William Linden.

I'm indebted to each of you for your genuine concerns, wonderful
suggestions, and undying support! The program would be nowhere near what
it is today if it hadn't been for all of you!

                               GETTING STARTED
                               ---------------

2.0 - How To Read The Documentation
-----------------------------------

The Astrologer's Assistant documentation consists of:

Table Of Contents - Quick reference to documentation sections and page
                      numbers.

Introduction - Lists system requirements, capabilities,
                      and limitations; and provides credits,
                      legal notices, and registration information.

Getting Started - Tells you how to install the software, how to print
the documentation, and goes through a quick tutorial
to familiarize you with the program basics.

Menus - An overview of the Menu Bar, its individual menus,
the options they provide, and the shortcut keys
that may be used to access them.

Charts - Step-by-step instructions for creating, deleting,
                      modifying, retrieving, or saving charts.

Displays - Step-by-step instructions for generating the
different displays available for viewing chart
                      data.

Dialogs - Provides detailed discussion on the mechanics
behind dialogs; how they work, options available,
                      and other pertinent information.

Windows - Provides detailed discussion on the mechanics
behind windows; how they work, options available,
                      and other pertinent information.

Dialogs - Provides detailed discussion on the mechanics
behind the different graphics screens; what
they're for, what the information is about, etc.

Appendices - Provides tables and listings on key commands,
                      abbreviations, and file structures.

Glossary - A compendium of terms that may need explaining,
and detailed discussion regarding every dialog
                      and window the program generates.

GETTING STARTED 10
The Astrologer's Assistant Version 3.00

Everyone should read the Introduction and Getting Started sections. They
provide crucial information which I deem necessary to properly use the
program. If you read nothing else, be sure to read the next section, "HOW
THE PROGRAM WORKS!"

Novices should review the Menus, Charts, and Displays sections. They'll
give you a feel for how the program works. I also strongly recommend you
read through the Dialogs and Windows sections at least once to become
familiar with the terminology and functionality that comprise a menu-
driven program, and Appendix A to see what commands are available while in
any are of the program.

Advanced users need only refer to the Charts and Displays sections for
details regarding how to generate charts and data displays. If you want
further information on dialogs and windows functionality, read the Dialogs
and Windows sections.

Programmers interested in using The Astrologer's Assistants' files within
their own programs should read the sections in the Appendices that discuss
file structures.

The Appendices will provide information on key commands and what the
various abbreviations mean.

To get detailed information on how a dialog or window works, look it up by
title in the appropriate Dialogs or Windows sections.

NOTE: There is no specific section for step-by-step instruction on
setting system preferences. General information is available
in the Menus section under the Prefer menu. Specific information
is available in the Dialogs or Windows sections under the specific
       dialog/window titles.

NOTE: Throughout the documentation, whenever you are required to type
a series of keys from the keyboard, this series will always be
enclosed in quotes. When entering the series, do NOT type the
quotation marks, nor any plus signs! When you are required to
press a single key, it will be surrounded by brackets. Again,
       do NOT type the brackets!

2.1 - How The Program Works
---------------------------

Because The Astrologer's Assistant uses several types of charts, it is
important that you understand what they are, and how they are manipulated.

The basic concept is that you may have two charts in memory at any given
time. I refer to these two charts as the "first" and "second" charts in
memory. There are three possible chart combinations that may be in
memory: No charts, just a first chart, and both a first and second chart.
No other combination is possible.

The "first" chart is the natal, composite, or relationship chart that you
create or retrieve from disk. It is the chart from which all other charts
are created. For this reason, it is also the only type of chart that may
be saved to disk for later retrieval. Whenever you create or retrieve a
first chart, all other charts are removed from both the screen and memory.
The first chart can not be modified, except via a deliberate editing
choice.

The "second" chart is created any time you choose an option that requires
any sort of modification to the first chart. The program copies the first
charts data to the second chart in memory and then applies any chart
modifications to that second chart. Choosing an option that generates a
second chart will clear your screen and completely overwrite any second
chart already in memory. Therefore, the second charts existence depends
solely on the presence of a first chart.

Lets take an example. You create a natal chart. This chart becomes the
first chart in memory. You now want to create a progressed chart, and
tell the program to progress your natal chart to whatever date. The
program will copy all the data from the first chart into a second chart,
and then progress that second chart. The first chart remains untouched!
If you then choose to create a harmonic chart, it replaces the progressed
chart, and the first chart is still there, untouched!

You can always view the first charts data by typing the "Ctrl+F" sequence,
the [F] being for "first". The second chart can be viewed by typing the
"Ctrl+S" sequence, the "S" being for "second."

If this is confusing, consider the system to work like two books. Book A
is a fine leather book, old and priceless. You would never dream of
marking in it! Book B is a loose-leaf notebook. You make commentaries in
it regarding the contents of book A. When you read book A, you may choose
to read it on an uncluttered desk, or you might decide to take notes, in
which case you pull out Book B. Seeing as book B is only a commentary on
Book A, it is worthless without Book A, so one never sees it unless Book A
is also there. When you're done working, you put both books away and your
desk is nice and clean.

2.2 - Setting Up Your Hard Disk
-------------------------------

The first thing you need to do is ensure that you create a subdirectory on
your hard disk to hold The Astrologer's Assistant. To do this, access
your hard disk (usually done by typing in "C:" and pressing the [Enter]
key). Now type "CD \" and press [Enter]. For the purpose of this
tutorial, you will use the subdirectory name "ASSIST", but you can use
whatever you want. Type "MD ASSIST" and press [Enter]. This will create
the ASSIST subdirectory. Now type in "CD ASSIST" and press [Enter] to
change to the ASSIST subdirectory on your hard disk.

Place The Astrologer's Assistant diskette into your floppy drive A:. Type
in "COPY A:ASSIST30.EXE" and press [Enter]. Note that you can use floppy
drive B:, in which case you would type in "COPY B:ASSIST30.EXE" and press
[Enter]. The file is rather large, and it will take a moment to copy.
Once the file has been copied, type in "ASSIST30" and press [Enter]. This
file is a self-extracting archive, and will create The Astrologer's
Assistant files in your ASSIST subdirectory. When the extraction process
is complete, you may erase the ASSIST30.EXE file on your hard disk by
typing "ERASE ASSIST30.EXE" and pressing [Enter]. Now type "DIR" and
press [Enter] to see what Astrologer's Assistant files you have. You
should see the following:

ASSIST.EXE - The main program.
ASSIST.HLP - Data file for the help system.
ASSIST.ICO - Icon for Windows v3.1.
ASSIST.OVR - Overlay file for the main program.
ASSIST.PIF - PIF file for Windows v3.1.
ASSIST.WLD - Data file for the World map.
DPMI16BI.OVL - Overlay file for protected mode versions only.
MANUAL - Documentation for The Astrologer's Assistant.
RTM.EXE - Run Time Manager for protected mode versions only.
CGA.BGI - Graphics driver for MCGA graphics cards.
EGAVGA.BGI - Graphics driver for EGA/VGA graphics cards.
HERC.BGI - Graphics driver for Hercules graphics cards.
PC3270.BGI - Graphics driver for IBM 3270 graphics cards.
REGISTER.TXT - Registration form.

To print the manual, type "COPY MANUAL > PRN" or "TYPE MANUAL > PRN". Note
that the manual makes use of extended ASCII characters, so be sure your
printer is capable of printing them. The manual is quite large and will
take some time to complete printing. Please ensure you have at least one inch
of computer paper available.

2.3 - System Requirements
-------------------------

While the program is designed to run on almost any IBM PC compatible, it
will run better on some than it will on others. If you have EMS memory
available, I STRONGLY advise you set a little bit aside for The
Astrologer's Assistant.

NOTE: The following is NOT required if you are running the protected mode
       version of the program.

The program makes extensive use of overlays. To put it simply, it's too
big to fit into memory all at once and therefore swaps out what it needs,
when it needs it. The overlay file is stored in EMS memory, which allows
extremely fast swapping.

If you don't have EMS memory, the program will still run, but swapping
will take place on your hard disk. This means the program will run much
slower than normal, and may be a cause of aggravation.

The following is a general CONFIG.SYS file, taken right off of my PC. You
do NOT have to redo your CONFIG.SYS file to match the example. I'm
providing this example simply to show novices how to add the appropriate
line to make use of EMS memory. Also, the example is for MS-DOS v5.0 and
v6.0 on an 80386 machine or better. If your computer has a slower
processor (CPU), then you may need to use a different memory manager than
the one shown.

Note the last line in the example. It allocates 2MB (2,097,152 bytes) of
EMS memory. The Astrologer's Assistant requires at least 1MB (1,048,576
bytes) of EMS memory if you plan on placing the overlay file into memory.

2.4 - Running Under Windows v3.1
--------------------------------

The program will work if launched from Windows v3.1. You should note that
you MUST have the latest version of your mouse driver available. Old
mouse drivers will probably not work for this program under Windows!

Start up windows in your normal fashion and follow these simple, yet
lengthy steps:

 1) Double click on the MAIN group icon with your mouse to open it up.

 2) Double click on the PIF EDITOR option inside the MAIN group.

 3) Click on the FILE menu option and select the OPEN option
     from within the menu.

 4) In the DIRECTORIES window, double click on the C:\ folder, or whatever
drive specifier you installed the program to.

 5) Find the folder containing the directory you put the program files into
and double click on it. For example, if you used the \ASSIST directory,
as outlined in the previous section, you would find the \ASSIST folder
     and double click on it.

 6) The ASSIST.PIF file should appear in the FILE NAME window.
     Double click on it.

 7) Change the PROGRAM FILE path, if required. If you used the defaults
as described in the previous section, it should be

        \ASSIST\ASSIST.EXE

If you have more than one hard disk, supply the appropriate drive
     specifier before the path name

       C:\ASSIST\ASSIST.EXE

 8) Change the START-UP DIRECTORY path, if required. If you used
the defaults as described in the previous section, it should be

       \ASSIST

If you have more than one hard disk, supply the appropriate drive
     specifier before the path name

       C:\ASSIST

 9) If you want full screen DOS text mode, click on the DISPLAY USAGE: FULL
SCREEN option. If you want Windows graphics mode, click on the WINDOWED
option. The advantage to the latter is that you can see your other
windows applications while the program runs. The disadvantage is that
some video drivers won't allow you to run the graphics part of the
Astrologer's Assistant in this mode. (See note at end of this section).

10) Click on the FILE menu and select SAVE.

11) Double click on the CONTROL MENU BOX to close the PIF EDITOR. That's the
little box with the line through it that appears in the top left corner
     of the dialog.

12) Double click on the CONTROL MENU BOX in the MAIN group to close it too.

13) Double click on the group you wish to place the program in.
If you are unsure, use the APPLICATIONS group.

14) Click on the FILE menu and choose the NEW option.

15) Click on the PROGRAM ITEM option and then the OK button.

16) In the PROGRAM ITEM PROPERTIES dialog that appears, type, without the
quotes "Astrologer's Assistant v3.00" for the DESCRIPTION line, and
"C:\ASSIST\ASSIST.PIF for the COMMAND line. Note that the drive
specifier is not required, and should be changed if you installed
the program on a different drive than C:.

17) Click on the CHANGE ICON button. When the dialog appears telling you
there are no icons available, click on the OK button. Change the
path name in the FILE NAME line of the CHANGE ICON dialog to
C:\ASSIST\ASSIST.ICO. Again, the drive specifier is not required and
should be change if you installed the program on a different drive than
C:. Click on the OK button and the icon will appear. Click on the OK
button again to close the dialog.

18) Click on the OK button to close the PROGRAM ITEM PROPERTIES dialog.

19) The program item is now added to your group!

20) If you chose the FULL SCREEN mode in your PIF EDITOR, you are done.
If you chose WINDOWS mode, you need to ensure a few other settings
     are set properly.

     a) Double click on the ASTROLOGER'S ASSISTANT v3.00 icon in your group.

     b) Once the program appears, click on the CONTROL MENU BOX and select
FONTS. Chose the 8x12 font and SAVE SETTINGS ON EXIT option. Then
         click on the OK button.

     c) Position your window to where you want it to be. Grab the bottom
right corner of the window and resize it so all of the screen is
visible within the window. Then reposition your window once more
to make sure it's exactly like you want it. When you are done,
you may either leave the program up and running for the following
exercises, or close it by clicking on the OK buttons until there
are no dialogs on screen and then selecting the QUIT PROGRAM option
         from the CHARTS menu.

NOTE: The Astrologer's Assistant does NOT support SVGA graphics!
If you run windows in SVGA mode and try to run the Astrologer's
Assistant in windows mode, you will get a Windows error message
when trying to view any graphics screen(s). You *MUST* use FULL
SCREEN mode if you're running Windows with SVGA.

2.5 - Your First Chart
----------------------

To help you get started, let's go through creating your first chart.
Don't worry, this will be relatively painless, and it will show you just
how easy it is to use The Astrologer's Assistant.

In the following tutorial, you will make exclusive use of the keyboard to
enter commands. If you have a mouse, feel free to use it. Each command
talked about has an on-screen area for mouse "clicking." If you are
unfamiliar with how to use a mouse, please follow along with the keyboard
commands until you have a chance to read APPENDIX A.

So let's do it! Type "ASSIST" and press [Enter] at the MS-DOS system
prompt, or double click on the program icon from within the appropriate
group on your Windows desktop.

2.6 - The Initial Screen(s)
---------------------------

The first thing you will see is a screen, with the Menu Bar across the
top, the Status Line across the bottom, and a Dialog Box in the middle of
the screen. The area of the screen between the Menu Bar and the Status
line will hereafter be called the "desktop."

Your screen should look something like this:

NOTE: The number to the far right of the Menu Bar indicates the current
       time in hours:minutes:seconds.  Hours are shown in 24 hour format;
       i.e., 2:00 pm is shown as 14:00:00.

NOTE: The number on the far right of the Status Line indicates how much
memory is left for use by the program. It will constantly change
as you perform various actions. The numbers displayed in this
tutorial will, in all probability, be different from what appears
on your system, and will vary from PC to PC.

For the time being, don't worry about all the fancy terminology. It will
be discussed, in detail, later, and you can find definitions for most of
the terms used throughout the manual in the GLOSSARY, DIALOGS, or WINDOWS
sections. The program is simply informing you that there is no desktop
file available at the moment because this is the first time you've run it.
Therefore, it will load its default settings into memory. Note that on
the bottom of the screen the Status Line tells you to press "Alt+O",
[Enter], or [Esc].

NOTE: The "Alt+O" key sequence means you should press the [Alt] key,
and while you hold this key down, press the [O] key.

Any of these keystrokes will make the Information dialog disappear and
allow the program to continue. Go ahead, press one of the suggested keys
or click on one of the Status Line options with your mouse!

The Information dialog is gone and a new one, called the About The Program
dialog, takes its place. Your screen should now look like this:

This is the screen that normally appears when you first run The
Astrologer's Assistant. It tells you which version of the program you
have, a bit of information about me, who you are, and what the program
serial number is. The serial number is important for registered users
because I will require it should you need to contact me.

NOTE: Your name and serial number will not be shown if this is an
       unregistered version of the program.

Once again, the Status Line at the bottom of the screen will tell you what
you need to do next. You have the option of pressing [Esc], [Enter], or
"Alt+O" to continue to the next part of the program. Go ahead and press
one of these commands now, or click on one of them with your mouse.

The About The Program dialog disappears and you are left with a blank
desktop. The Menu Bar and Status Line stay on the screen, which should
now look like this:

Note that the Status Line has changed again. This is important! The
Status line will always let you know what your options are. In
particular, notice that some of the Status Line options are shaded out.
This means that these options are not available right now. At this point
you can get help by pressing [F1], create a new Chart by pressing [F4], or
you can go to the Menu Bar by pressing [F10]. Clicking your mouse on one
of these options will yield the same results.

OK, now let's create a natal chart.

2.7 - Creating A Chart
----------------------

For the sake of this example, you are going to create a natal chart for
fellow astrologer Michael Erlewine. His birth data is rather well known,
and you can therefore use it as a milestone to see if The Astrologer's
Assistant really works. You don't want to use a program that doesn't give
you a "warm fuzzy" and this will be a quick way to check our computations.

Mikes' birth data is as follows:

Michael Erlewine

The Status Line at the bottom of your screen has an "F4:New" option
listed. Notice that the option is active, that is, it is not shaded out.
You can use the [F4] key to create a new chart, and that's exactly what
you will do here.

Press the [F4] key now, or click on it with your mouse. This will bring
up a Type Of Chart dialog which allows you to determine what type of chart
you want to create.

Your screen should look like this:

Notice that there are three options available: Natal, Composite, and
Relationship. Before each option is a set of parentheses, and the first
option, Natal, has a dot inside those parentheses. This means that the
Natal line is the active option that will be selected.

You can use the arrow keys to move the dot to Natal, Composite, or
Relationship, or you can press the highlighted letters preceded by the
[Alt] key to directly select one of the three options (i.e., "Alt+R" would
select the Relationship option). If you are using a mouse, you simply
click on any of the three items, Natal, Composite, or Relationship, to
choose them.

You want to create a natal Chart, so simply leave the Natal option
selected and press "Alt+O", as recommended on the Status Line. If you use
a mouse, simply click on the OK button after you have selected the
appropriate option.

NOTE: The mouse can not be used to click on any Status Line option that is
preceded by arrow keys. In this case, clicking on the "NCR:Select"
       option will do absolutely nothing.

The Natal Chart Input dialog allows you to enter and/or edit the pertinent
chart data required to create a natal chart. You type in the data for
each line, and press the [Tab] key to go to the next line or field. You
press "Shift+Tab" to go to the preceding line or field. Or, if using a
mouse, point to the line you're interested and click on it.

NOTE: The Astrologer's Assistant recognizes Daylight Savings Time and War
Time. Place a "DT" or "WT" after the event Time to force the program
to use Daylight Savings Time or War Time. Do NOT subtract an hour
from the time, nor a day for midnight times! The program will do
       this for you automatically.

NOTE: For double daylight times, you will have to not only use the DT
or WT at the end of the time line, but also subtract an hour
from either the Time Zone or the actual event time. The program
has no way of displaying the fact that you've done this in
       subsequent data windows or printouts!

this chart. Clockwise from the upper left corner of your screen, you will
note that the windows are numbered 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. The
information in each window breaks down as follows:

     1) Chart data, in this case Mike Erlewine's natal data.
     2) Latitudes of the planets.
     3) Transneptunian geocentric positions.
     4) Planetary geocentric positions.
     5) Moon data.
     6) Asteroid geocentric positions.
     7) Placidus house cusps.

window. You can activate any one of the windows by pressing the [Alt] key

mouse and click on it.

Notice that right now window #8 has its border highlighted. This means
that window is selected. When a window is selected it's border becomes a
solid double line. Unselected windows have single solid line for their
border.

Press "Alt+1" and note that the window #8 now has a single solid line for
a border and that window #1 now has a double solid line. That is because
window #1 is now the window currently selected. Now press "Alt+3" and
note that the Latitude window is replaced by the Transneptunian window.
Press "Alt+2" and the Latitude window reappears.

2.8 - Saving A Chart
--------------------

Notice on the Status Line that options which were previously grayed out
are now available. At this point, you should save your chart to disk. It
is always a good idea to save any new chart you create, after reviewing
its data. This enables you to quickly recall it from disk at a later
time, instead of having to type it all into the Natal Chart Input dialog
again.

The Status Line will prompt you to enter a file name for this particular
chart. A file name must consist of not more than 8 characters and conform
to the MS-DOS file naming conventions (see your MS-DOS manual). The
Astrologer's Assistant adds an appropriate file name extension depending
on what type of chart is being processed; therefore, do not enter any file
name extensions!

So, just type in "MERLEWIN" and press [Enter]. Providing there are no
problems in accessing your disk, your chart should now be safely tucked
away on your hard drive for later retrieval under the MS-DOS file name of
MERLEWIN.NTL. You don't even have to concern yourself with this
information, because the program takes care of all these little details.
All you need to remember is the name of the person. You'll see how this
works in the next section.

This dialog has what is called a "list box" which will contain all the
available charts that are stored on your disk. Currently, there is only
one chart in the list box; that of Mike Erlewine's. It is highlighted
under the "Name" label, which sits right on top of the list box.

Mike's name also appears at the very bottom of the Select A File dialog,
and the MS-DOS file name for this chart is directly beneath his name. Why
have his name in two places? Well, the names of all the charts you have
stored to disk will appear in the list box, in alphabetical order. You
move the highlight bar in the list box to select the name of the chart you
want to retrieve. As the highlight bar moves over each name, it shows
that name at the bottom of the Select A File dialog, along with the MS-DOS
file name. This allows you to see what the MS-DOS file name of this chart
is, should you need to use this file in other programs, etc. It's
strictly an information type thing.

Once you have highlighted the chart you want to retrieve, you can press
"Alt+O", or click on the Open button with your mouse. Mike's chart is the
only chart you have out on disk, so it is already highlighted. If there
were more charts, you would press the Up/Down arrow keys to make the
appropriate selection, and then press "Alt+O".

So, go ahead and press "Alt+O" to select Mike Erlewine's chart.

The Natal Data window will appear, showing you all the pertinent data for
this natal chart, along with a House System dialog that prompts you to
enter a house system of your preference... sound familiar?

2.10 - That's It?
-----------------

Now, that wasn't too hard, was it? You can now create any type of chart
the Astrologer's Assistant supports. The whole purpose behind The
Astrologer's Assistant is to make the casting of charts a simple matter so
you can concentrate more on interpreting the results than worrying about
the tedious drudgery of chart calculation.

OK, if this is the first time you've ever used a program that is menu
driven, you might be a bit confused by the fact that there are usually
several ways to do the same thing. You can use the keyboard to enter
commands, or you can use the mouse to "point and click" for the same
commands. When using the mouse, you can also point to several areas and
click on them to do the same thing. Don't be intimidated by this variety.
Decide on a system that you are comfortable with and stick with it. After
a while, you'll be flying through all of the different screens with no
problem!

Please note that quite a few of the commands you've used so far are
available on the Menu Bar under the Charts option. You can access the
Menu Bar by pressing the [F10] key. The first time you do this, the
Charts option will be highlighted. Press [Enter] to pull down the Charts
menu. You can move around the menu with the Up/Down arrow keys. If you
are using a mouse, point to the Menu Bar's Charts option and click on it.
After the menu opens up, point and click on any menu option once to select
and execute that option. Detailed instructions for using the Menu Bar are
provided in the MENUS section.

Since you have a chart in memory that's also safely stored on disk,
perhaps you should just play around with all of the options and see how
the rest of The Astrologer's Assistant works. I'd suggest you first read
APPENDIX A to become familiar with the various cursor, command, dialog,
and window keys. Last of all, you might want to read the DIALOGS,
WINDOWS, and GLOSSARY sections to become familiar with the terminology
used throughout the documentation, and how the various dialogs and windows
work.

If you get lost, look through the table of contents to find specific
categories and the topics covered under them. If you need detailed
information on how a dialog or window works, look in the DIALOGS or
WINDOWS sections. If you need to know how create a specific type of
chart, look in the CHARTS section. Also, don't forget that the [F1] key
brings up on-line help at any screen.

Above all, enjoy!

                                  APPENDIX A
                                  ----------

Key Commands And Cursor Movement
--------------------------------

What a cursor key, or key combination does, depends on which area of the
program you are working in. The following will describe each of the
general areas in The Astrologer's Assistant, and how the cursor keys
function in that area.

General Cursor Key Movement
---------------------------

The up, down, left, and right arrow keys on your keyboard are used to move
through the various Menu Bar options and menus, to make selections within
dialogs, to scroll through data in windows, or to move actual dialogs and
windows about the desktop.

Please note that if you are using the arrow keys that are in the numeric
keypad section of your keyboard, be sure you press the [Num Lock] key so
it is turned off! These keys do double duty as cursor keys or number
keys, depending on whether the [Num Lock] key is on or off. The IBM
expanded 101 keyboard has a grouping of cursor keys that are situated
between the normal keyboard and the numeric keypad. I would suggest you
use these cursor keys, as opposed to the ones on the numeric keypad.

Dialog Options
--------------

Dialogs have many "controls" within them: buttons, input lines, radio
controls, checkboxes, list boxes, scrollbars, and all sorts of other
items. Please read the DIALOGS section to become familiar with all these
items.

You can access any of these controls by pressing the [Alt] key in
conjunction with the highlighted letter associated with the control item.
This will either take you to that area of the dialog, or actually select
that item, depending on what the control does.

Most of The Astrologer's Assistant dialogs are simple ones, usually
offering a selection of items from which you need to pick one. Others are
complex, offering several selections, each of which might offer multiple
selections of their own.

Hopefully, the following key list will help you in navigating about the
dialog box, and in choosing and selecting the various options that you
will be offered.

NOTE: The up and down arrow keys will usually not work in a dialog
that has input lines. Please read the section INPUT LINES
       for further information.

Input Lines
-----------

You can use the left and right arrow keys to move about on an input line.
This is usually done to correct typing mistakes, etc. While the up arrow
key will occasionally allow you to move to a previous input line, you will
find that the down arrow key will not perform an equivalent action.
Instead, it will bring up a History window that is attached to that input
line. Instead, use the [Tab] key to proceed to the next input line, or the
"Shift+Tab" key sequence to proceed to the previous line. If you have a
mouse, simply click on the input line you wish to access.

Input lines also make use of the [Home] key to take the cursor to the
beginning of a line, or the [End] key to move the cursor to the end of a
line, providing the line already has data in it. The [End] key always
goes to the last character of data on an input line, and NOT the very end
of the line.

[Left Arrow] - Move left one character position.

[Right Arrow] - Move right one character position.

[Down Arrow] - Activate History window, if one is attached.

[Home] - Move to beginning of the current line.

[End] - Move to end of data on the current line.

"Alt+First Letter" - Pressing the first letter of any input line label
will select that input line for use.

[Del] - Delete a character at the current cursor position.

[Backspace] - Delete character to the left of the current cursor
                       position.

[Ins] - Toggle insert mode on to insert a character at the
current cursor position, or off to overwrite a
character at the current cursor position.

[Enter] - Accept data and proceed to the next control.

[Esc] - Abort and close the current dialog in its entirety.

"Alt+F3" - Abort and close the current dialog in its entirety.

[F1] - Display on-line help for current item.

Map Commands
------------

The following features are available while viewing the orbital projection
map:

[X] - Toggle "cross hair" on/off. This feature
displays a cross hair on the screen so you
may navigate about the map to see what latitude
and longitude the various projections are at.
Latitude and longitude positions are toggled
on/off in the upper left portion of the screen.

[Up Arrow] - Moves the cross hair up (north) one pixel.

[Down Arrow] - Moves the cross hair down (south) one pixel.

[Left Arrow] - Moves the cross hair left (west) one pixel.

NOTE: If a window has scrollbars, be sure you look at the scrollbar first
before trying to resize the window in a similar direction. If the
scrollbar does not contain a slider, it means the window is already
at its maximum size in that direction and, therefore, can only be
       shrunk.

NOTE: You may also move a window by pointing to the window title with
the mouse cursor and while holding down the mouse button, drag
the window to where you want to position it. Letting go of the
mouse button returns the window to its normal state and anchors
       it where you "dropped" it.

NOTE: You may also resize a window by pointing to the Resize icon
located in the bottom right corner of resizable windows,
and while holding down the mouse button, drag the window
corner in the direction you want. The window expands/contracts
       accordingly.

Scrolling and Non-Scrolling Windows
-----------------------------------

Many of the windows that appear on the desktop are scrollable, that is,
the data within the window may be scrolled up/down or left/right. You can
use the up, down, left, and right arrow keys to scroll a line at a time
through these windows. You can also use the PgUp/PgDn keys to scroll a
screen at a time.

Scrolling windows also make use of the "Ctrl+Arrow" key sequence.
Pressing the [Ctrl] key, holding it down, and then pressing one of the
four arrow keys will cause the window to scroll all the way in the
appropriate direction. The [Ctrl] key can also be used with the [End] and
[Home] key to move to the very first, or very last, position in the
window.

Note that scrolling windows will have a scrollbar attached to them. You
can use the mouse on this scrollbar. Clicking on the arrows at either end
of the scrollbar will scroll the window once in that direction. Holding
down the mouse button on that arrow will smoothly scroll the window until
you let the button go. Each scrollbar also has a "slider" which indicates
how far you have scrolled in this window. Moving the slider with the
mouse lets you move quickly to the general area you want within a window.
If there is no slider present on the scrollbar, then the window is
complete and does not need to be scrolled.

As every astrologer learns, the world is divided up into many different
time zones. You must be aware of what time zone a particular latitude and
longitude coordinate lies within when casting any type of chart. A
listing of the standard time zones is provided here for easy reference.

Structure Of A Saved Chart
--------------------------

The following information will probably be of interest to programmers
wishing to incorporate chart data files from The Astrologer's Assistant
into their own programs.

All charts are saved to disk as a standard ASCII text file. This means
that you can easily access the data for incorporation into your own
programs.

Note that the type of data is indicated in parentheses. Each line is
terminated by a carriage return and linefeed combination (CR/LF).

The Astrologer's Assistant will read in both V2.0 and prior data files.
If it encounters an earlier version, it performs an automatic conversion
process. Both types of data files are listed below. Notice that v2.0 uses
scientific notation format to store its numeric values.

The format of a saved chart, using Mike Erlewine's chart data, is as
follows:

NOTE: The reason for the change in DOUBLE to REAL scientific notation
format between previous versions and V2.0 is due to changing from
the Borland Turbo C to Borland PASCAL compilers.

NOTE: Please notice that the Moon's data, the angles data, the
transneptunian data, and the asteroid data occupy different areas
of the data file in V2.0. The code example that follows below shows
how to convert from prior versions to V2.0.

NOTE: The time zone string in prior versions was a number, whereas in V2.0
it is now the abbreviation for the actual time zone. The only area
of the program where this string was used was the center of the chart
wheel. Chart wheel data is now printed outside of the wheel, and
this item is no longer used, but has been retained in the file for
       compatibility with prior versions.

NOTE: The field preceding the Day, Month, Year fields used to say for
future use. Well, now it contains whether or not standard, daylight,
or war time was in effect.

Internal Data Structure
-----------------------

The program uses the following internal data structure to store the chart
data. Note that this is a PASCAL data record type:

                                  APPENDIX E
                                  ----------

Structure Of An Index File
--------------------------

The following information will probably be of interest to programmers
wishing to incorporate index files from The Astrologer's Assistant into
their own programs.

The program uses index files to organize and save the chart and associated
data file names to disk. The Astrologer's Assistant allows three
different types of Index files: Composite, Natal, and Relocation. Each
of these index files is titled "NAMES" and ends in the appropriate
filename extension. For example, NAMES.CMP is the index file for
composite charts, NAMES.NLT is the index file for natal charts, and
NAMES.REL is the index file for relationship charts. The program allows
you to save all three of these index files, and their associated data
files, in the same directory, so care should be taken to determine which
index file is residing in a directory.

All index files are saved to disk as a standard ASCII text file. This
means that you can easily access the data for incorporation into your own
programs.

Each line in the index file consists of three entries, as follows:

Name Of Chart - Consists of up to 30 ASCII characters.
The ASCII character [@] (Hex $40, Dec 64)
                       is NOT allowed!
Field Separator - The ASCII character [@] (Hex $40, Dec 64).
MS-DOS Filename - A total of 12 ASCII characters based on
MS-DOS filename conventions (See your MS-DOS
manual). Consists of up to 8 ASCII characters
for the filename, a period, and the filename
                       extension.

An index entry may total up to 45 characters, to include the carriage
return and line feed (CR/LF) combination that terminates each line.

The Astrologer's Assistant Version 3.00

The format of an index file is as follows: (CR/LF are shown as "CL").

         10 20 30 40

NOTE: The Astrologer's Assistant automatically alphabetizes the index file
by the chart name entries. Therefore, if you modify the index file,
be sure you alphabetize the lines according to the name entry,
and DO NOT ALLOW DUPLICATE NAME ENTRIES! Program behavior is
unpredictable if duplicate entries are encountered.
