The Exorcist |

The best horror film ever, or so everybody says. Well they're probably right! This is basically the only film that can scare you, not just make you jump or have you on tthe edge of your seat. I know you know then story, but, in the UK, were the film was banned outside of the cinemas until about October 1999 (sadly, I live there), so some people may not have seen it. I remember, basically sneaking into a one-off showing of it at the cinema (25th anniversary) on Hallowe'en 1998, and as the end credits came up I said to myself, i gotta see that film again! The film might never have been repeated at the cinema for years, so I ended up buying a PC-DVD player and getting the film on american import! (Then to my dismay, the very day the DVD arrived, I saw a sign in a video shop window advertising its imminent release for rent!). Anyway, that is how good the Exorcist is! |

The aspect I love about it most is not its gruesome special effects (though they're very good for the 70's), or even its theological side, but just the little things that you miss when you only watch it once or twice. An example of this is when Karas (one of the exorcists) is having a dream/nightmare. All of a sudden, for about a fifth of a second, a devilish face appears on the screen, and if you hadn't noticed this a previous time, I guarantee it will at least unnerve you. Another great partt is when Karas is in an underground train station. A tramp holds out his hand and asks";could you help an old altar boy father", but Karas walks on. Later in the film, when he is examining Reagan (the possessed girl), he turns his back for a second, and she repeats those exact words in the exact same voice. It certainly makes your hairs stand on end, if you notice it. It makes you think that, wherever you are, evil is always there and appears in many forms, weather in murderers or just in ignorance. |
