A Final Eulogy to Robert.
Robert , probably the best chess player in the vicinity of 72nd St. and Broadway, was for me an inspiration in the chess game. In a text, Chess and Bayesian Statistics, I have applauded his game and said how well his chainings and his combinations led him often to victory. He played like a champion and was a master in a game where chance was little and reason was big, in bringing a sequence of events that led to victory. His discerning mind could easily see the end and allowed him always to choose among a discrete set of alternatives to get it. Althoug he knew the rules of the opening, his game was marked more by flexibility than by method and by the tactic of adapatation than by any rigid strategy. For me, he can easily be compared in this cerebral sport to the Olympic gold medalists. Good bye Bob. Iwill always remember you. Roger. |
