Iran Democracy?
Although, at least, formally, there is no monarchy and most of the autocraties have been downgraded and eliminated, a society, unless it is anarchic or, more precisely, barbarous, remains with this kind of stratification, with those privilegiate groups at the head and the others at the bottom. The religious fondamentalists of Iran have, for example, lost ground in their own country and among their people, by having ignored this and having failed to liberalize the "democratic" regimen there, in February 2004. They may even be jeopardizing the new conquest that has followed the departure of the Shah under huge local, popular and international pressure. Is Iran a theocracy, instead of being a democracy? It is time to make the distinction.
