Your actions, during the first 60 minutes following serious injury, are crucial and can save lives by reducing injuries and by setting the priorities:

  1. if possible, stay with the victim while someone else* calls for help
  2. and then begin  ABC** (called also BLS in Great Britain) if necessary:
    1. if no breathing, begin mouth to mouth respiration
    2. if no pulse, begin CPR (cardio-pulmonary ressuscitation) if knowledgeable (reserve a l'auteur: p.1 et p.2)
    3. continue until victim revives or help arrives
  3. apply direct pressure to stop bleeding
  4. if there are suspicion of neck or spine injuries do not move victims
  5. check victims for emergency medical ID tags and/or medications
  6. do not give food or liquid if victim isunconscious or semi-conscious because he cannot swallow and will suffocate
  7. stay calm and reassure victim

What to do until help arrives in cases of burns?

Smother flames - Ask somemone to call for emergency aid if burn is severe - If necessary, begin mouth to mouth breathing - do not remove clothes - Immerse area in cold water only if there is no blistering or broken skin - Cover burn with cleanest cloth available - Keep victim lying flat and lightly covered.

What to do until help arrives in cases of car accident?

If the car is not severely damaged, pull off road and turn on flashers - Turn off ignition of wrecked car and warn bystanders of danger of fire - call for emergency assistance or ask someone to do so - First, attend to victims who are not breathing or who are bleeding - Don't move victims unless in danger from traffiic or wrecked car.

What to do until help arrives in cases of cardiovascular shock or hypotension?

Lay victim on back with feet higher than head unless you suspect head or back injuries or there is vomiting - Check for breathing difficulties and get someone to calll for emergency help - Apply direct pressure and elevation to stop persistent bleeding - Loosen tight clothing and cover victim - Offer reassurance and stay calm.

What to do until help arrives in cases of chess pain?

Get someone to call for emergency help - If the victim became unconscious and not breathing, begin mouth to mouth breathing and if no pulse, begin CPR (if knowledgeable) - If the victim is conscious, help victim to comfortable position, head raised -. Loosen thight clothing and if under medical care, help victim with prescribed medication.

If you can get an answer, ask are you chocking? Yell for help - Begin the Hemlich maneuver: (1) stand behind the victim and wrap your hands around his waist; (2) put your fist (thumbside) against abdomen (above navel and below the cage) and grasp fist with other hand ; (3) then, press into the abdomen with a quich upward thrust - Repeat this thrust if necessary.

Catch vitim if falling. Clear a space and place a pillow under head. Don't put anything in mouth or try to stop jerking movements. Loosen tight clothing. Stay withh victim. Get someone to call for emegency help if you need to restore breathing, another convulsion occurs and victim is pregnant.

What to do until help arrives in cases of drowning?

Get victim immediately out of the water. If he is profound water, swim to him or get some one else to do it.. If not breathing. begin mouth to mouth breathing as soon as victime is supported on hard surface. Get also someone to call for emergency assistance. If no pulse, begin CPR (if trained). Elevate feet if unless yuo suspect a fracture, cover with blanket to prevent shock and don't give anything to eat or drink.

What to do until help arrives in cases of drug overdose or drunkenness (with delirium or without delirium but lying still in cold weather)?

Remove victims form any dangerous situation or position - Get someone to call for emergency assistance or use your cellular phone - If not breathing, begin artificial respiration - If no pulse, begin CPR (if knowledgeable) - Try to find what drug was taken - collect any pill, bottle, urine or vomit submit to hospital.

What to do until help arrives in cases of severe bleeding?

For severe wounds, get someone to call for emergency help while covering wounds with cleanest cloth avilable or clean bare hands and press firmly to stop or control the bleeding - Elevate bleeding arm or leg unless you suspect a fracture - Add cloths on top of first cloth as needed - Maintain direct pressure on the wound and elevation of members until help arrives.

What to do until help arrives in cases of eye injury?

Encourage victim to tear but not to rub eyes; if object is loose, it may then dislodge itself alone - If embedded, cover both eyes with gauze and get immediate assistance - For chemical burn, quickly flush eyes with water for approximatelly 10 minutes, then cover both eyes with clean dressing and get immediate and emergency help.

What to do until help arrives in cases of electric shock or lightning?

Turn off imediately power and remove any contact wire with dry and non conducting (wooden or other nonmetallic) object - Move away the victim from electrical source. Someone whoo has been struck by lightning can be touched immediately - If the victim is not breathing, begin mouth to mouth respiration- If there is cardiac arrest try to reanimate with a punch on the chest and begin CPR (reserve a l'auteur: p.1 et p.2)

What to do until help arrives in cases of fall?

Control bleeding - Call for help - If you suspect a broken bone, make a splint by placing rolled up newspaper or other firm objects on each side of the fracture and secure with 2" wide cloth strips - If not breathing, begin mouth-to-mouth respiration - Do not move victim if possible until the emergency team and car arrives

What to do until help arrives in cases of poisoning?

Have (handy) the telephone of your Regional Poison Center and your area's Emergency Phone Numbers. If necessary consult the White or Yellow Pages directory (reservees a l'auteur: p.1 & p.2) - If victim is conscious, try to find what was swallowed - Call the Regional Poison Center and tell them: What, How Much, When, Victim Status and ask for or tell the Nearest Hospital - Follow exactly directives - Collect ingesta containers, victim's vomit and urine.

What to do until help arrives in cases of stomach pain?

Lay victim on back with head and thorax elevated- Take from time to time temperature and pulse - Don't give food, drinks, laxatives or any medication - If vomiting, turn head to side - Call for emergency help (activate EMS) if pain (a) is accompanied by fever, (b) is severe, (c) is slight but lasts more than 3 hours, (d) is localized in one area particularly the lower right (letting you think to appendicitis), (e) if victim feels dizzy or looks very sick (sweating, rapid pulse and rapid and shallow breathing)

What to do until help arrives in cases of stopped breathing?

Tap victim face and shout "are you OK?" - If no response ask someone call for help or aticate EMS - Then begin ABC as above

What to do until help arrives in cases of unconsciousness?

If faint, lay victim down with feet elevated or bend over with head at knee level - If unconscious, leave victim lying down, elevate feet and loosen tight clothes - Get someone to call for help or call for help yourself - Then proceed to give mouth to mouth respiration as needed.
