Scrambling  and Bouldering at Gilstead
If  you take the path from Fernbank Drive or  Rombald's Drive that leads overto the Prince of Wales Park, you soon see  the rocks on the right with the mobile phone masts blighting the scene behind.  Take the path leading up to the right bythewooden  fence and you come to the rock shown left.  It's a good place to start. It's a short sequence of little ledges and toe holds  that you step up using your hands for balance. If that was too easy try  traversing along the rock to your right by the side of the path. It starts off  very easily and then becomes more strenuous as you move along. This bit of the traverse ends with an  edge that is climbable but requires a stretch and is a bit harder. The next  section, which is overhanging, can be traversed by moving your hands along the  top and using the broken ledge beneath for your feet. It's very secure but by  now your forearms may well be feeling the strain. Round the corner the rock  becomes mostly head height but it's possible to keep off the ground, traversing right  round to the front of the crag where you started. There's one good awkward  section where you go round the jutting corner by the birch tree.
Further  over on the left, a prow  provides an excellent  little route. The most strenuous bit is getting off the ground. There's a good  series of handholds and footholds but you have to pull up and gravity seems to  swing you left. As you move up there are big jug holds so resist the temptation  to bolt right to the ledge. Stay on the left: the pull over the top is super  secure with good hand holds.
