Rubefacients
(Counter-Irritants)

This group of topical pain relievers are all non-prescription medications used to cover up the sensation of pain and are available over-the-counter (OTC) in many forms: cream, gel, spray, patch, etc.

Topical pain relievers of this form are efficient in relieving pain due to occasional, mild muscle aches.  However, it has been determined to be not effective for most forms of chronic pain (i.e. arthritis).

This type of topical pain relievers is especially unique due to the special complexity of different chemicals (salicylates) that can make a rubefacient.  Products of this nature typically require frequent application and often have a medicinal aroma to them.

There are more rubefacients on the market than any other form of topical pain relief.  Some of the brand names sold in the United States today include Arthricare, BenGay and IcyHot.
