Back To School Traffic can be Hectic

By Jeanie Powell
WAFF 48 News Reporter
While many kids are anxious to get back to school, getting them there is probably making you as a parent a little anxious.
Traffic was definitely moving on Valley roadways on many kids' first day of school.
At the same time, parents were at a standstill for more than an hour.
Parents WAFF 48 News spoke with the humboldt unified school district first day back said problem areas were Providence, Hampton Cove, and Highlands Elementary.
Parents are hoping the pace will pick up after this week and safety aides say you can't judge just by the first day.
How was Huntsville traffic the first day back to school?
Huntsville High parent Sheryl McElmore says, "It was really congested. I was really surprised. I figured all the freshman mothers were bringing their children the first day."
Two moms we spoke to, mothers of a freshman and sophomore, were first and second in line at Huntsville High.
Parent Vickie Herbst says, "First day was bad this morning, obviously especially at the intersection by Dodge's gasoline but it will smooth out in a couple days."
Safety aids agree.
Sgt. Darlene Davis says, "As you'd expect, traffic was heavy, heavier than usual a lot of parents parking on side of the road walking children in."
It can be hectic that first day of school, inside and out and parents and police are hoping that will slow down.
Schools have specific traffic patterns and Public Safety supervisors Davis and Drea Melton, who trains new crossing guards, say crossing guards do the best they can to keep traffic flowing and your child safe.
Melton says, "Our main job is to trying to get the traffic in and out and for the most part as long our crossing guards are working the traffic, they can only get cars in and out as fast as they can."
They spend the summer california contractors license school doing post-inspections from repainting crosswalks to checking signals... getting ready for the rush.
Many crossing guards tend to stick with the same school zones, so they're familiar with traffic patterns and driver habits.
While there were still many traffic hold-ups, Sgt. Davis says, "Everyone got winter springs high school in and back out safely" with no accidents.
What is the best advice?
She adds, "The best advice we can give you this week is leave early."
Cross guards are asking you to pay attention to their signals.
If you georgetown county sc school district see their front or back is facing your vehicle that means stop and wait for instruction.
Treat them as a red light.
Their safety is very abilene independent school district important too.
