COWBOY COMMERCE

Buyin' a load of hay now and then
is a challenging enterprise.
It has to be good for feed and certainly
has to be the right price.

I was dickerin' around one day with
an old boy in the next county
About some pretty good lookin' grass,
and what might be the bounty.

Now this ol' boy was right proud of
his merchandise, and holdin' steady.
I told him if he got his number down
out of the clouds, I was ready.

"Now Bill,.." says he, "..we've done
a lot of business in days gone by,
And you ain't gettin' me to drop my
price, so don’t even try.

I said, "Man, you're ornery as a coyote
with a thorn in his paw.
As good'a friends as we are, and you're
gonna' stand there, set in yer' jaw.

Here I am tryin' to scratch out a livin'
with what the Good Lord give,
And you take advantage, knowin' I can't
grow no grass up where I live".

He said "You're breakin' my heart, but I
got to make a livin' too,
So don't sing me no more sad songs, just
get your hay, and pay what's due."

Then I hit him with the "A" material,
thinkin' it would help my case,
"Ol' Sam only gets six dollar a bale.."
I says, with a grin on my face."

He said "Well, get a few bales for me
while you're there, say about twenty."
So then I had to come clean and said,
"Well .. right now, Sam don't have any."

"Ah..now we're in business.." he said,
".. we're mighty close to makin' a sale,
'Cause Bill, when I ain't got any, I only
get FIVE dollars a bale."
