Sherovari Details

back to uniform authenticity

The shavovari 'semi-breeches' of the red army are made from the same type of fabric as the gymnastiorkas. Here is a close up of the fly showing the buttons and hook and eye closure.
This pair has a noval placketed front. The fabric is simply folded over to form two layers and stiched down. Other examples have a placketed front added to them.
Again, proof that similar looking does not mean exactly matching.

The reenforcing patch on the knee, while similar to that on the gymnastiorka, is different. This is made from one piece of fabric and sewn in place over the 'knee'. It is then top stiched down to further reenforce this stress point.

The cuff and foot-strap on a pair of post war sharovari. This foot-strap helped keep the footcloths in plase and the trousers inside the sapogi.
This is one type of cuff closure. One some WWII pattern sharovari the cuff flap closed with two small buttons like the sleeve cuff. On others there was a simple tie strap.
The foot strap in these examples was made from heavy cotton twill tape in an olvie green shade.
