CHAPTER THREE
RIFLE SQUAD
FORMATION
. There are two squad formations- Single Rank and Double rank.
To arrange the squad into one rank give the command
?SQUAD-FALL IN.? (?OTDELENIYA- STANOVEESE?)
Having given the command the squad leader stands at the position of attention and extends his arm out to the side to indicate the front of the formation and immediately drops it. The squad arranges itself to the left of the squad leader in a single rank. The interval between the soldiers is equivalent to the width of a palm extended from one?s side to the neighboring soldier?s elbow.
. To arrange the squad into two ranks one must give the command
?SQUAD, INTO TWO RANKS- FALL IN?,
(?OTDELENIYA, V DVYEA SHERENGI-STANOVESE?)
Having given this command the squad leader stands at the position of attention and extends his arm out to the side to indicate the front of the formation and immediately drops it. The squad arranges itself into two ranks- the second rank is the distance of an extended arm from the first rank. The soldiers occupy the positions shown in drawing # 34.(not shown)
. For alignment of the formation give the command
?DRESS/ DRESS TO THE LEFT?,
(?RAVNYAEES/ NALEVO- RAVNYAEES?)
On the command ?Dress? all the soldiers except the one on the flank put their bayonet on their right soldier, turn their heads to the right (right ear higher than left, chin slightly raised) and align the themselves so that each has sight of the chest of fourth person as if it was that of the first On command ?ATTENTION? (?SMIRNO?) all the soldiers will snap their heads forward and place their rifles at the position of order arms. (to the leg).
. For counting off the single rank into ?Ones? and ?Twos?, the command is given, ?IN ONES AND TWOS -COUNT OFF?,
(?NA PERVWEE EE FMOROY- RASSCHITAISE?).
The count begins with the right flank and each soldiers, having announced his number quickly turns his head to the soldier standing to his left and quickly snaps it back to the forward position. The left most man?s head does not turn.
. For counting off the squad in numerical order, the command is given
? IN NUMERICAL ORDER- COUNT OFF?,
(?PO PARYADKOO- RASCHITAISE?).
This command is carried out the same as indicated in instruction 107., but each soldier states his own ordinal number. In a two rank formation the left-most man of the second rank upon completion of the formation count adds:
?COMPLETE?,
(?POLNEE?).
. For confirmation of the military job specialty, the squad leader names the soldiers by their job specialty, and each soldier calls out his name: for example to ?OBSERVER?, the corresponding soldier answers ?IVANOV?.
. Turning the squad in place is carried out by the same command which is given to a solitary soldier but with the preparatory command;
?SQUAD?,
(?OTDELENIYA?).
All soldiers complete the turn simultaneously preserving their spaces. When the squad in two ranks does an about face, the soldiers of the second rank become the first rank.
For extending the squad in place, the command is given,
?SQUAD, TO THE RIGHT [TO THE LEFT, FROM THE CENTER]- EXTEND? or SQUAD, RIGHT [ LEFT, FROM THE CENTER]- IN SO MANY STEPS- EXTEND?,
(?OTDELENIYA, NAPROVO RAZEM-
. KANEESE?).
Each soldier, except the one from which the opening is created, turns to the direction of the opening, with a quick step moves forward, glances at the person next to him and maintains the appropriated interval between them The soldier then turns and performs a facing movement in the direction towards the front of the rank. If an interval was not indicated in the command then the execution occurs in only one step. Upon command ,
?DRESS?.
(?RAVNYAEESE?),
the squad aligns itself on the edge of the flank from which the extension occur, preserving the indicated interval.
Extension at the quick-time is achieved with the same command but with the supplemental command
?QUICK-TIME?
(?BYEGOM?) .
. For closing the squad the command given is:
?SQUAD, TO THE RIGHT [LEFT, TO THE CENTER]- CLOSE RANKS,
(? OTDELENIYA, NAPRAVO SOM- KANEESE?) .
Everyone but the soldier from whom the squad was extended turns to the side indicated by the command and with a quick-step returns to the established interval for a closed rank squad, stops and turns toward the direction of the squad front.
. In order to lay down a squad in two ranks formation the command is given
?SQUAD-LIE DOWN,
(?OTDELENIYA- LOZHEESE?).
Upon this command the forward rank takes one step forward and both ranks lay down. Upon the command
?STAND,
(?FSTATY?),
both ranks stand and the rearmost rank takes one step towards the front rank.
If the two rank formation is turned towards the direction of the flank then the order to lie down the squad includes the preparatory command
?HALF TURN TO THE RIGHT?,
(?POLOBORTA NAPRA- VO?)
 is given and then
?SQUAD- LIE DOWN?,
(?OTDELENIYA, LOZHEESE?).
. To move the squad the command:
?TO INDIVIDUAL TREE [ON THE RAOD, ALONG THE CANAL] SPREAD OUT TO THE LEFT [CENTER, RIGHT] SQUAD, QUICK-TIME [DOUBLE-TIME] MARCH?,
(OTDELENIYA, NA DEREVO ???? RAVVNENIYA NAPRAVO- SHAGOM- MARSH?).
The leading man heads in the indicated direction, the remaining soldiers continue to move aligning upon the leader and maintaining intervals.
. To change direction by wheeling around, give the command
?SQUAD TO THE RIGHT [LEFT] WHEEL FORWARD,
(?OTDELENIYA, PRAOYA PLENCHO VPEREOD, SHAGOM- MARCH?) .
The squad begins wheeling the right flank forward. The flanking man of the advancing edge walks at the full step, adjusting his movement so that he will not crown soldiers towards the non-advancing flank. When the wheeling movement is performed from a standstill, the flanking person on the non-advancing flank takes steps in place. When the movement is done at the march the flanking person makes an arch while at the same time turning to the left [right] coordinating with the movement of the wheeling flank such that the squad continuously presents a straight line. When the squad has wheeled around for enough the command is given
?STRAIGHT?,
(?PRIYAMO?)
or
?SQUAD- HALT?,
(?OTDELENIYA, STOI?).
To Change the direction of forming up the squad, after the squad has been turned in the direction of the flank (facing movement to left or right) the command is given
?SQUAD- FALL IN TO THE LEFT [TO THE RIGHT], QUICK-TIME[DOUBLE-TIME] - MARCH?.
To carry out he order if at a standstill, at the command ?MARCH?, all the soldiers except the flank person makes a half turn towards the side they are forming up on and move out using the shortest route to the new front line and stop. To carry out the command while moving it is performed the same as while at the standstill except that the flank around from whom the forming up occurs and the soldiers upon completion of the forming up march in place until the command ?FORWARD? or ?HALT?. When performing this
maneuver at double-time [run] the flanking man continues to move at a full step while the rest of the soldiers switch from a full step to a double-time to the forming up line.
. To restructure the squad from a two rank formation into a single rank formation it is necessary to preliminarily extend the ranks by one step and then give the command,
?SQUAD, INTO ONE RANK- FALL IN?.
Performance of the restructure while at a standstill is completed in three counts. The soldiers of the second rank: 1) move their left leg a step to the left; 2) step forward with the right foot, entering into the first rank and ; 3) bring the left leg along side the right. If the squad leader is not in the file the observer takes a step to the left. To carry out the movement while in motion the first rank takes two steps in place , the soldiers in the second rank take a step to the left with their left foot and with their right take a step forward and the squad continues to march.
. To convert a squad formation from one rank to two ranks the command is given:
?SQUAD, INTO TWO RANKS- FALL IN?.
The execution of the formation is occurs in three counts.
If the squad is constructed based on the individual combat specialty then rearrangement while at the standstill the soldiers of the second rank:
1)     take a step to the rear with the right foot;
2)     take a step to the right with the right foot; 3) bring the left foot back alongside the right foot. To perform this maneuver while at the march the first rank continues to march while the second rank takes two steps in place and with the third step moves directly behind the soldier in the first rank.
If the squad has not been assembled in accordance with the individual combat specialty then it is necessary to count the squad off into first and second ranks.
Upon the command ?INTO TWO COLUMNS-FALL IN?, if at a standstill the number 2s take a step to the rear with their left foot, then with their right foot they take a step to the right and bring their left foot alongside their right foot. While at the march, the number 1s continue to march while the number 2s take two steps in place and with the third step they move to position themselves directly behind a soldier in the first row.
. To open and close the interval in the ranks while at the march the same command is given as at a stand still. The soldier upon whom the squad restructures pivits, switches to half step at the command of execution, the rest of the soldiers do a half turn to the right or left, and continuing to march either extend or contract the formation. Having taken the appropriate interval, each soldier independently turns to the direction of movement and moves at half step, evening up on the flank (middle) upon which occurred the open ranks (closed ranks). When the open ranks (closed ranks) is complete, the command ?FORWARD? is given upon which movement is continued at full step.
. Stacking of weapons can only be done in a two rank formation. Upon the command ?STACK?, the first rank turns around, upon every two soldiers in turn, starting from the right flank, place there their weapons in the stack, light machine-guns are placed in the stack. After this the ranks independently turn to face the front, the first rank- one step forward, the second rank- one step behind the stack.
In order to un-stack the weapons, the command is given, ?SQUAD- TO THE WEAPONS?, and followed by the command ?SQUAD-TAKE WEAPONS?. On the first command the soldiers form up- the first rank one step in front of the stack- the second rank one step behind facing the first. Upon the second command the first rank turns around and together with the second rank removes the weapons, after which the first r
ank turns around and the second advances towards the first rank to acquire the established distance.
. Weapons are laid down on the ground on the command of ?WEAPONS-LAY DOWN?. The first rank takes two steps forward after which both ranks simultaneously take a step forward with their left feet, and each soldier, kneeling, lays the weapon on the ground with the bolt handle underneath, laying it along the foot; straightening up, the soldier places his left foot back next to his right. In a single rank formation, perform only the last two steps of the procedure.
. To greet the commander the squad leader stands two steps forward of the front rank. When the commander has approached to a distance of 20-25 steps, the squad leader commands ?SQUAD-ATTENTION-DRESS-RIGHT?. Having given the command the squad leader approached the commander according to the steps indicated in stanza 63, and reports (for example).
?Comrade senior lieutenant, such and such squad posting such and such, squad leader whoever?.
Having reported, the squad leader performs a step to the side with a simultaneous turn to the right (left), again places his hand along his temple (salute) allowing the commander to go forward, accompanies his along the squad front following behind him on the other side (external side). The squad leader replaces his hand back down on the command ?AT EASE?. For greeting the commander, expressing pleasantries you answer loudly, clearly and agreeably. If upon meeting the commander the squad leader is armed with a rifle then he does not perform the salute but stands at the position of attention and continues with the rest of the indicated procedure.
. To greet the commander while at the march the squad leader gives the command ?ATTENTION, DRESS- RIGHT (LEFT)?. Upon this command the squad continues to march saluting the commander as shown in picture 61; the squad leader while marching past the commander reports (for example)
?COMRADE CAPTAIN, FIRST SQUAD OF THE FIRST PLATOON OF THE SECOND MOTORIZED RIFLE REGIMENT ON OUR WAY TO THE FIRING RANGE; SQUAD LEADER IVANOV?.
. Upon being called out of the formation by the commander, the solder, at a run, exits the formation, halts three steps from the commander and repeats: ?SOLDIER IVANOV REPORTS BY YOUR COMMAND?. Having received permission to return to the formation, the soldier does an about face and at a run returns to his place. Having reached his position he performs an about face in order to face forward. Exiting from the formation is done only in a forward direction. In a two rank formation, if the soldier who is being summoned out of the formation is positioned in the second rank then to exit the formation he must lightly hit his hand on the soldier standing in front of him. The soldier in the first rank then takes a step forward with his left foot and a step to the right with the right foot, allows the other soldier to exit and returns to his position by stepping to the left with the left foot and returns in the rank by stepping to the rear with hid right foot. The first rank soldier performs the same maneuver at allow the second rank soldier to return to formation.
The commands ?AT EASE?, ?ATTENTION?, and ?HALT? and for saluting are the same as those given for a single soldier, except with the inclusion of the preparatory command ?SQUAD?. In order to dismiss the squad the command is given, ?SQUAD- DISMISSED?.
