A tribute to Pili Beach
The eldest in the twelve offspring of
Leandro L. Metin, a carpenter, and his
beloved wife Remedios Marte-Metin, I
was born 53 years ago in the coastal
town of Pinamalayan, province of
Mindoro Oriental, Philippines.
About three kilometers from the hub
of my hometown lies PILI BEACH, very
much like the one in the picture above.
My favorite teenage hideaway, it was
in Pili Beach where I had thought that
to live the life of a writer was what I
wanted most.
It's still what I want most.
Today I live in Quezon City, still
following my dream, and being also known
as  "Phantomanok" to old friends and
bosom buddies, and "Maria Elena Cruz" to
the readers of  more than 115 romance
novels in paperback that I have written under this penname.
I have told a thousand short stories in
illustrated form known locally as komiks,
worked for sometime as assistant literary
editor of
Liwayway, the country's no. 1
variety magazine in the vernacular, and
currently writing a column, "
PINGLISH
TALK," for
Tempo.
Hitching my wagon to the stars has always been the
last thing in my mind.  Had I been more ambitious, I would have
tried  to write for the world and not just for those who only
knew Tagalog, my native tongue.  And I  would have really
tried to write and not just tell stories like
Phantomanok.  But I love Tagalog so much as I do
enjoy just storytelling
a lot.
