Pogo - 4 months

Hi, I'm Pogo, a Timneh African Grey Parrot which is smaller than a Congo or Red-Tailed African Grey.  I weigh about 320 grams (0.7 lb).   My birthday is Sept 23/02 so I'm still young!  I may live 50 years!  I can say "Peekaboo," "Pretty bird," "Peep peep, Pogey" (my mom said that to me when I begged/chirped to be handfed), "Hi Pogo," "Hey, Pogey," What a good bird," "Kisses for you," "Good boy," "Look at you," "Step up," "Hello, how are you?," "Do poop,"  & give lots of kisses with sound effects to match  (see more below).  I'm really good at imitating sounds like other birds, cats meowing, water dripping, squeaks, etc.

You can see I'm holding one foot up which is how I sleep (to keep one foot warm).

This is me scraping my beak which I do when I'm getting ready for bed.

You can see my leg band which was put on when I was only a few days old.   After that my feet wouldn't bend enough to put one on, so if you get a parrot, make sure it has a closed band.  Otherwise, it may have been illegally & cruelly imported & an open band placed on later.

I really like to have the back of my neck scratched where all of the new feathers are growing in - they get really itchy!

Cage in progress This is my cage before it was all finished.   My mom & dad converted an old wardrobe with plexi-glass & wire cages.   The small door is a cat door installed upside down so I can stand on the door when it's open.  There are Robert Bateman prints of birds on the back wall & lots of toys so I don't get bored when I'm in there.  When I was young, I only lived in the top half so I wouldn't fall too far until I got older & more co-ordinated.

I'm very smart & am learning to "poop in the bucket".  I hardly ever poop in my cage any more - I usually wait for someone to take me out so I can poop in the garbage or on my tray.

This is me at 5 months looking cute as ever.   I really haven't changed since then except that my eyes have lightened to pale yellow.  I'm a bit of a picky eater - if I haven't tried something before it takes 2 or 3 times before I'll eat it.  My favourite people foods are cheese bear & cheese bit crackers, pasta (PC KD!) & cheese (which I'm not supposed to have but it's SO good!).   I also like scrambled eggs, cooked turnip, sweet potato, cookies & crackers.  I'm not allowed to have anything with chocolate, caffeine, alcohol or avocado.  My regular food is parrot pellets.  I'm supposed to eat vegetables but they're more fun to shred - especially corn on the cob! Pogo in Playstand This is me in my playstand.  It was designed as a greenhouse but it works well for me.  My mom put the biggest bar in the middle for me to stand on & covered it with vet wrap for traction.  There was a middle shelf but that's now on the roof of my cage for me to hang from.  The plastic cover keeps some of my mess in.  I really like to climb the rope bone & fight with my plastic keys.  I also hang upside down from my perch & play with my toys.  One time I grabbed onto the top bar from my rope & I was hanging from my beak & couldn't get down.  I flapped a couple of times & my mom rescued me.

I sit here when my mom works on the computer.  I play for awhile then have a nap.

This is me in my bright pink harness that I wear to go outside so I don't get carried away by the wind.  My wings are clipped but I could still get away.  I don't really like to put the harness on & usually bite or fly away when my mom tries to put it on me.  So far I've only gone to the mailbox across the road a few times & to visit the llamas & alpacas.

Pogo - 11months reads Feng Shui I'm a very intelligent bird.  At 11 months old I'm already into Feng Shui!
Pogo - Flapping in Bath May17/03 I also like to have a bath & shower.  My mom puts warm water in my tray (similar to a fast food tray) & puts me in it.  Then I get sprayed with warm water.  Sometimes I flap my wings like crazy & drag my tail & belly in the water.  It's really fun!  I end up looking really funny when I'm all wet.
