Want to hold that flattop in place and save some money at the same time? This suggestion was sent to the Buzztown Barber Shop by a reader.
I've had a flattop for a number of years now, and also when I was in my teens and twenties (the fifties and early sixties). I have somewhat unruly hair, but after a lot of experimentation to get my flattop to look just right, including gels, mousses, etc. (which don't do well in humidity, are expensive, have to remember to pack) I have found the ideal, cheap, and always-available technique I have used for about two years. I wash that bristle with plain bar soap rubbed on and lathered up. Rinse lightly, keep a bit of the lather on your hands. Pat a bit on the hair where it needs to hold the most. Towel dry, brush back immediately, then blow dry while brushing. The small amount of soap scum is the perfect stiffener. On really humid days I may use a bit of Krew Comb, but usually don't have to. This works even better when the hair is a bit long (I try to get it cut every two weeks, same expert flattop barber, #1-1/2 blade on sides and back, flat on top but a bit rounded at the corners).
Doesn't this leave the hair damaged, or dry, etc? Get serious - you will get it buzzed off before split ends will happen!
(Thanks to Mike for his contribution.)
