The Art of Shaving - A Special Store

Many Buzztowner readers not only enjoy getting a great haircut - they also enjoy the feeling of a freshly closed-shaved face. Either when they shave themselves, or by treating themselves to a professional shave.

One Buzztowner, Charlie, has found a great store with two locations in Manhattan that specializes in everything you need for really good shaving equipment and much, much more.

I thought that I would share some information about a place I went to in New York City. The store is called "The Art of Shaving". It is a store devoted entirely to the old world art of shaving with a brush, straight edge razors and safety razors. You will not find a single can of shaving cream in this store nor will you find any electric razor supplies! It's a store for the shaving enthusiast and connoisseur. The items are somewhat expensive, but quality is definitely there.

There are two locations:

141 East 62nd Street,
New York, NY

Phone: (212) 347-8436
373 Madison Avenue,
New York, NY

Phone: (212) 986-2905

The location on East 62nd Street is just a store, but the location on Madison Avenue has an added treat - a professional barber! An individual that is expertly trained in the fine art of hot towel shaves. Let me tell you, I received one yesterday and it was the best shave I have ever received. I had what they called the "Classic Shave". This particular shave lasted a good 30 minutes, and included a steaming hot towel wrap, facial massage, accompanied by a hot lather, very close shave, followed by alum block rub and a cold towel wrap to close pores. Finally "aftershave milk" was applied to soothe the skin. It was definitely worth the $30.00 price tag!

Other services available include:

  • The Royal Shave - similar to the Classic, with added features, lasts about 45 minutes and costs $40.00
  • Beard/Mustache Trim - $10.00
  • Haircut - $30.00
  • Shave and Haircut - $60.00.

You need an appointment for a shave or haircut. I didn't have one, but was able to get one about a half hour after I went into the store. The Madison Avenue location is primarily a store, so it's not like a barber shop. Definitely worth a visit even if you can't get a shave!

Again some may think the prices are high, but a little pampering on one self never hurt anybody. One more thing, although I shave every day now, after that shave my skin felt like a baby's bottom - or like I had worn a beard my entire life and this was the first time I felt skin without hair on it. You got to experience it to believe it!
