A Buzztown reader wrote "Needed a haircut before a early morning appointment on the road. So, I asked a local police officer (they ALWAYS know where to get a good cut inexpensively). I arrived late afternoon, looked like he was closing up, but was willing to give me a cut. $8.00 was the price. He was quick, thorough and did an excellent job! A WWII veteran, he had seen lots of changes from the barber's chair in rural/now suburban Kankakee. Great stories and a great cut from a good old fashioned barber on Main Street USA."

He does a fantastic high and tight flattop, he still uses shaving cream and a straight razor on the sides and back, a real rarity! Bob is very personable and it's always a pleasurable experience to get a haircut from him."

If you prefer a flattop with some length on top to comb or spike, speakup BEFORE the cut, otherwise be prepared for a short military style flattop. Chuck's Barber Shop
44 W Square Lake Rd, Troy, MI 48098
Phone: (248) 879-6763

A reader sent in details of this barber shop in Troy, Michigan. "SW corner of Square Lake (19 mile) and Livernois. I went into this six chair barbershop Saturday. The place seemed a little busy but there was a 40 year old on the right side of the shop (middle chair) waiting for me. All of the barbers seemed to be doing a really good job, kids and adults were there alike. The barber that did my hair asked a lot of questions to make sure he did my hair to my liking, and I really liked how the chairs are placed close to the mirrors so that you can see what is going on. Haircuts are $11."

Steve & Dukes Mens Hair Styling

Phone: (810) 731-0690

29696 Dequindre Road, Warren, MI 48092
Phone: (810) 751-1560
Shop hours: Tues. thru Fri. 10-6; Sat. 9-4

Another recommendation sent to me by Mike. "Most of the cutting in this barbershop is performed with clippers, not scissors, and all the barbers here have a great eye for tapering. If you ask for a #2 on the sides they can do an expert taper, gradually leaving the hair on the upper sides a little longer. It's hard to find barbers that do this well. Let them know if this is what you want. Flattops seem to be the shop specialty, and a sign promoting the cut is prominently displayed in the front window. A great place for almost any style, the barbers take their time with each customer and get the cuts right."

Leven Barber Shop
Shop Hwy 63, Freeburg MO

Price: $6.00 (both shops)

"The absolute best flattop in America is cut by a barber in Meta, Missouri. He has been in business for 39 years. Started cutting flattops in the '50s before anyone knew they would be the cut of the 90's. Just like country music, they are here to stay. The best thing about the Meta barber - Alfred Leven - is that the price is $6.00.We have urged him to up the price but he says he is concerned about the working people. If you can find a better barber to cut a flattop in America, then bring him on! By the way, the Meta Barber cuts his own flattop - people can't believe it. Most importantly the barber is my dad! He's the best and is what American folklore is all about."
Thanks to the reader who sent in these details of his father's shop.

Swiney's Barber Shop,
3461 Ashby Road, St Ann, MO 63074
Phone: (314) 426-0290

Thanks to the Buzztown reader, who provided details of a great barber shop in the St. Louis area.

"A traditional two chair shop, both barbers are equally skilled at all types of short clipper cuts. The barber closest to the door is named Ben, unsure of the name for the other guy but you'll hear them boast of their reputation for knowing how to give "real" haircuts. You need to understand that they are both "agressive" with the clippers, moving fast and going short on the first pass. They use Oster tools, will ask what blade you prefer (#000,#0000,#1, #1.5, etc.), and surprisingly it seems most of their customers know what that means. Clientele is surprising young (under 40) given the age of Ben and his partner. Crowded on Saturdays but rotates fast because most cuts are high and tights, low and tights, and crews ... they do excellent flattops and that can slow things up some. Last Saturday, I was one of six guys in the shop, all got some variation of a tight cut, high or low. Very clean shop with great mags but it can get smokey ... both barbers smoke and they encourage customers do to the same while in the chair if they prefer. Great place for me to enjoy a good stogie, catch up on some good conversation, and get my weekly high and tight (one of the best #000-#1 in St. Louis)."

Lloyd Careys Barbershop

Phone (314) 351-6193
Shop hours: Tues. - Fri. 8:00 - 5:30, Saturday 8:00 - 3:00

Special thanks to Nick who sent in this detailed report of a great shop in St. Louis, Missouri and also has coined the term "Buzztowner" for readers of the Buzztown site.

The shop I stumbled across today is Lloyd Careys Barbershop. It is a great shop just down the street from a great cigar shop I wanted to check out. Having been about two weeks since my last cut, the place looked to be traditional in all respects so I thought I'd check it out. A 5 chair shop with 4 barbers at work at the time, the overwhelming sound of clippers as soon as I walked in assured me the place was a "real" shop. I maintain anywhere from a #000 high and tight to a #000 all over and in some shops I have walked in, the look you receive is one of confusion as to why you would even want a haircut. At this place they appreciate and understand the fresh and crisp look of tight cut and welcomed me like any other regular. A busy place to say the least, it is a take a number set up although you can place your number with a specific barber if you prefer. Observing the guys at work while I waited, they all seemed to know how to use their clippers. I heard no reference to blade numbers, but two different barbers asked if they should take it "down to the skin" which they did without hesitation and utmost confidence, as did John who gave me one of the best high and tights I've had in St. Louis. Nothing seems to be done gently or with a soft touch, it comes off quickly but precisely which is to say short is real short and in my case tight was real tight. In fact, the pro (named John) that high and tighted me, had his Osters turned on and ready when he asked me how I wanted it done. Maybe intimidating to some, I think other Buzztowner's understand my appreciation. It's a lively and fast paced place ....lot's of jokes and stories. All cuts are finished with lather and blade followed good rub down of great smelling aftershave. $9.00 ....I'll be a regular!

Ohio

Johnson Street Barbershop
Johnson Street, Akron, OH

I stumbled across this unassuming little place after getting lost looking for a friend's house in the University of Akron area. It has no formal name, and there is apparently no phone listing. It is located in a tiny stand-alone brick building in a rundown neighborhood, but it is a great little shop.

The place is tiny: two barber chairs, 4 waiting chairs and that's about it. There is usually one barber, and a second older barber works part time. There is barely room for two people to stand up at the same time. If you're not careful you may hit your head on the overhead light fixture. The small quarters make for good conversation, and both times I've been there, the place has been packed with lots of easy banter among regular patrons and the barber(s). Lots of high school-aged guys and guys in their twenties have started going there, in addition to kids, retirees and workers of all kinds. Part of the appeal is the price: $5.00 for a great haircut. I guess that's possible because of the no-frills interior and what has to be cheap rent in a sketchy neighborhood.

The inside hasn't changed since the 1950s, I'd guess. There are vintage barber chairs and equipment. My first haircut there, I waited as a father and his two young sons got haircuts and watched two young guys get their already short crewcuts tightened. I had a grown out generic medium-length haircut that I'd been getting trimmed at a chain-place because I couldn't find a regular barbershop that was open during my off-hours. Glad to be back in a regular barber shop, when it was finally my turn I asked the barber for a short taper, close around the edges and short all over.

He went to work with the clippers and proceeded to give me the best haircut I've had in a long time. When he says taper, he means TAPER and the sides and back were a perfect gradual blending from no hair around the edges to just barely enough to comb down on top (about an inch and a half at the longest). And I mean the edges were SMOOTH, shaved down to nothing with an outliner for about the first inch of the hairline and rising evenly above that. He cleaned up the edges with a straight razor a slicked the top into place. All cutting was done with clippers and various attachments, no scissors were used.

The only drawback to such a short haircut is that it grows out so quickly, but at just $5 a cut, I'm not complaining. It you're into short hair and a real barbershop experience, check this place out. They're open weekdays and Saturdays. Sorry I can't be more specific with a name and address, but if you drive down Johnson Street you can't miss it. It's the tiny brick shop on your left (coming up Johnson from Grant Street), close to the road and before the highway overpass.

Thanks to Alex for these details of this interesting traditional barber shop.

Main Street Cadiz, OH
Shop hours: Tue. thru Fri. 9-5, Sat 9-1

The only barber shop in Cadiz, Ohio. Two lady barbers - Dana and Barb - both great barbers. Barb is Danas mom and has more experience, but Dana takes her time more especially on flattops. Both have great personalities, (nice to look at!) and are great barbers. They can put a landing strip in and cut a flattop tight enough to bounce a quarter off. Be warned, they both know how to use clippers well, and have blades that go down to the Oster #0000 - they will not hesitate to use them. They look innocent and naive in a male-dominated barbers world, especially Dana.

All haircuts in the place are $7.00 and thats a steal. They actually get embarrassed and tickled when you offer them a $ 1.00 tip. Offer them a flat 10 spot ($3.00 tip) and they actually try to give it back! (They both did it once!)

Great conversation and they get cable TV on the shop TV if the wait is REAL long which is usually between and hour or two on Saturdays.

Cadiz, Ohio is off of Route 9, route 22 or Route 250 in Ohio. (All 3 intersect in town). Worth the drive. I drive 45 minutes myself every 3 weeks. One try and you will be hooked.

Update from a happy Buzztowner:

Ted's Kleen Kut Barber Shop
3023 Tuscarawrus St., W Canton, OH 44708
Phone: (330) 455-5870

Ted's is kind of a scruffy older shop along busy Tusc Aveneue, but he does excellent cuts, short and not so short. Ted is a Greek immigrant and has been cutting hair for years. He started in the Merchant Marine. He is very knowledgable about the barber trade, and has interesting things to say about how it has changed over the years. He struggled for awhile when long hair was in, but in the last few years he's had (at times) more business than he can handle. He says he'd like to add a pretty young lady barber to help him out and bring in more customers, but I personally like the shop the way it is.

Ted does an extremely thorough job. He wants to give you the cut you want, and once he knows you want it SHORT, he'll go as close as you want. He gets busy on Saturday mornings and sometimes late in the afternoon, but during weekdays and mornings, you can often walk right up to the chair. A lot of younger guys and cops have started going there in the past few years. I get a short taper, but I've seen him do excellent crewcuts, flattops, buzzcuts, and close all over with an outliner, in addition to regular businessman's cuts.

Retiree's haicuts are $5, and i'ts either $7 or $8 for everyone else (I forget exactly). Flattops are a bit more.

Ted is an excellent barber and also a great guy to talk to. This unpretentious little shop is the kind of no-nonsense neighborhood shop that it's getting harder and harder to find. I drive 30 minutes out of my way just to go a haircut there.

Rebecca's Shaker Barbershop
12808 Larchmere Boulevard, Cleveland, Ohio
Phone: (216) 229-3057

It's a small, two station shop that caters to a wide variety of clientele from students to older men and women with short, traditional, easy care, cropped styles. I pass by this shop every day, on my way to work, and have thought of stopping in once or twice, but have always driven on because Rebecca, the lone proprietress, always seemed busy cutting, with one or two clients waiting. At the moment, she has no assistant, although at times I have seen an assistant working in the shop. I always felt long waits would be involved and never found myself with the time for that.

I wasn't meaning to get a haircut today, although I was due for one, and my hair had started to appear unruly and excessively curly at the back and sides. As I passed the shop, I noticed it was empty, and then I saw Rebecca outside, watering some plants. It looked like she wasn't busy at the moment. So I stopped and parked my car across from her shop and walked over, thinking it'd be a good time to get a quick haircut.

She greeted me in a friendly voice, and I followed her in. After I had sat down in her chair, and after a we had had a bit of small talk about how nice the weather was, she asked me what kind of cut I wanted. I asked her for a very short crop, tightly tapered at the back and sides, but also immediately expressed some reservation that such a cut might make my elongated face appear even more elongated. She considered me carefully, and assured me an ultra-short cut would work for me. I told her to proceed.

Over the next twenty five minutes, she gave me a traditional barber shop haircut, alternately clippering and scissoring my hair into a close, head shaping cut. She sprayed water on my head, and worked it into my scalp, kneading and massaging hard in a way that felt really relaxing. As a finishing touch, she used a straight edge razor on the back of my neck and along the hairline down my neck on either side, shaping precise lines over the ears and down toward the back. By the time I was done, I had shed about two-thirds of the fuzz I had walked in with. It's not quite a crewcut, but pretty close to that. I think I'll go even shorter next time.

This whole haircut experience was wonderful. The cut turned out great, although the first look in the mirror produced a slight shock at the extent of the shearing that had taken place. It was precise, every hair in place, and I decided I loved it. Under the late morning sun, my own shadow looked liked that of a shaven headed man, and it made me feel like a new person. (Someday I hope to go in for a complete head shave, but I am not sure I can go through with that as yet!)

Walking into work, I was immediately noticed and my haircut received a complementary comment from a female coworker. That convinced me I had at last found the perfect barber.

My wife, conservative by temperament, was a bit taken aback to see me nearly hairless as she returned from work in the evening, but I think that after just a couple of hours, she's already getting used to me looking like this.

Rebecca's Shaker Barbershop is highly recommended by this reader!

Thanks to Victor for this detailed show review.

The Rockefeller Barber Shop

I am a young woman in barbering in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. I cut hair at The Rockefeller Barber Shop, W.6th St. It is a very enjoyable, and artistic profession for me. My shop is in its original state from the turn of the century. Floor to ceiling marble. Marble ceilings, Marble floors, antique porcelain barber chairs. It has a wonderful atmosphere. Located in the up and coming Warehouse District. Owner: John Laurie.

I'm just sending a recommendation of a good barber shop in North Royalton Ohio. It is called Stefanec's Family Barber Shop. The barber I went to was Lorie; she cut my Hair GREAT! Its the best haircut I have recieved. It was a very short taper cut. They have two other barbers also - one male and another female. Haircuts at this shop are $8.00.
Thanks to Frank from Ohio for this recommendation.

The Barber House
3841 North High Street, Columbus, OH

A must try in Columbus, is the Barber House. The proprietor is Gerilyn Lane. She was in the process of moving to a new shop she was setting up with her daughter (trained first in cosmetology and then barber school) when I last visited (June 1997). Unfortunately, you usually need an appointment, but it is worth it. I recommend booking a scalp massage when you schedule an appointment (about $4 more). You will be so totally relaxed in the barberchair in front of her signature fireplace, that you will become more daring than you ever thought possible. Gerilyn is an excellent barber who is not scissor-shy if left to her own accord.

Bob's Barber Shop (formerly listed as Andy's Barber Shop)
22924 Lorain Road, Fairview Park, OH 44126
Phone: (216) 734-3261

Original listing: Another recommendation from the Hairnet Hotline. This shop was recommended in response to a guy who has had trouble getting a good flattop. Another Hairnet contributor, Joe, replied that he had gotten good results from the barber nearest the window at this shop.

Update: Andy's Barber Shop has now changed its name to Bob's Barber Shop. Thanks to Paul for sending the following information. "Bob is the barber in the chair closest to the window. Before I went there I called to see if he did flattops and/or high & tight flattops. He said sure, no problem, which made me feel confident he could do at least a good flattop. Today I stopped there for the first time; I have a high & tight flattop, which I get cut every 10 to 14 days. Bob cut my high & tight, #000 on the sides and back, landing strip on top, and as flat as a table, the best high & tight flattop I've ever had. I forgot to ask if he would shave the sides if I wanted, but he uses shaving cream and straight razor around the edges.

Martin's Barber Shop
11590 Lebanon Rd, Sharonville, OH 45241
Phone: (513) 563-4752

This is a recommendation from a Buztown reader for a great barber shop in the Cincinnati area.

"A local barbershop in Cincinnati, OH that is probably the best I've found in the country is Martin's Barber Shop, Route 42 just about 1/2 mile south of I-275 Northen Loop. I have lived all over the country, abroad and shopped at numerous shops everywhere but this is the best. Over 8 chairs and two guys who are deluxe at all types of short cuts down to a complete head shave. Greg and Chris are the two but Chris is by far the best."
