Bath Barbershop
Near the Railway Station, Bath

The classic short-back-and-sides joint, but a little expensive (£7-£10). I got a great buzzcut from here which looked damn cool without being too aggressive! On the corner opposite the Bath Spa train station, I'd recommend it to all short hair enthusiasts.

Peter's Men's Hairdressers
26, Bedfordbury London WC2M 4BJ
Phone: (0171) 379 1142

Bedfordbury is just off St Martin's Lane, between Leicester Square and Covent Garden (about midway between these two underground railway stations on the Piccadilly line). Peter's is a traditional barber shop, now owned and operated by George, Panos, Andy and Niko - the three sons and son-in-law of Peter, the original owner who retired a few years ago but who still goes in occasionally. The barbers are all youngish, very friendly and have a large regular youngish clientele many of whom work in the theatres in the area (this is the heart of 'theatreland'). They are good at cutting all styles, but I think of them mainly as short clipper cut specialists (you won't get a better flattop h&t, crewcut etc anywhere else in London). Opening hours are 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday through Saturday. No appointments - just wait in a short line - though if you want to call ahead and say you'll be in just after 6.00pm one of them will usually stay behind for you.
Thanks to Martin for this review.

Paul's Men's Hairdressers
34 Shorts Gardens, Covent Garden, London, England

I recommend Paul's Men's Hairdressers, located at 34 Shorts Gardens, Covent Garden, London. From the Covent Garden tube station walk up Neal Street, away from Covent Garden to Shorts Garden, go right, and its on the right. Paul's is a two man operation, and both guys are about 30. Paul wears his hair in a French Crop while the other barber has his hair cut longer. The place is covered with old movie posters and Paul is well versed in both cinema and haircutting. Paul does French Crops, Flattops, Crewcuts and basic short haircuts. Theres a sign in the window that this is what he specializes in. He charges around 10 pounds, or about $17. Paul also sells wax for your flattop or Crop. I would highly recommend him.

Mr. Perkin's Gentlemen's Hairdresser
Ford Park Road, Plymouth, Devon
Phone: (01752) 268288

A smart black & white shop owned and staffed by Nigel Perkins. He tends to specialise in shorter cuts with clippers, though in the 6 or 7 years I've been going he has cut my hair in styles from centre parted fringes to short grade 2 crew cuts! He guarantees a non-rushed cut allowing himself around 30 minutes per client. As he is one-man booking is advisable. His shop is in Ford Park Road, off Mutley Plain (handy if you know Plymouth)

The Haircutting Shop
55a London Rd, Sawbridgeworth, Herts

This is my favourite - satellite TV, comfy chairs and an excellent team. The guy with greyish, centre-parted hair is by far the best. Another very busy joint which also cuts ladies' hair, but not often. Short hair is its strong point and I know why.

WIGGIES
6 Duckling Lane, Sawbridgeworth, Herts

Another good barbers which can deal equally with modern styles as traditional ones. About £7 for a haircut, but be prepared for a long wait on Fridays, and Saturdays. There is a young guy with longish brown hair centre-parted who is the best in my opinion. Very good for looking at other guys' hairstyles for inspiration, particularly over the weekend.

France

SALON LUC
4, Quai de la Pêcherie
69001 LYON
Phone : 04 78 39 01 31

This is where a lot of guys go to have good short haircuts. This is a two chair shop with barbers Luc and Thierry. Both do good short haircuts but Thierry is younger and he is my hairdresser for years. They do the best flattops in town and H&T, and I have sometimes mohawks. This is a very busy saloon and it is better to phone for an appointment. During the year he does a good Ivy League haircut for me, and in summer when I ask for it much shorter, he does something like H&T with #1 on sides and back. Next summer I'll ask for white walls. I known he can do that and also shaves.
Thanks to the French reader who sent in these details of the first French shop to be listed on Buzztown.

New!Profil's coiffure
3, Rue Mercière
F-69002 Lyon
FRANCE

"This is the best place to have a very short hair cut!
Everytime very full, this is better to phone before!
I know Bruce who is a younger and he cuts the hair very short with no hesitation!
Last summer, he cut my hair as a H&T crewcut very good and the customer before me sported the same cut! Be carreful, because if you ask for a very short haircut, he can do a shave!  Bruce himself sports cuts from baldy to crewcut!
Another good hairdresser sports a flattop and I saw that he can do a very good ones!
The price is right (110 FF or $16.50) for the good job!

Germany

Rainer HAMM
Hochstrasse 21
66132 Saarbruecken-Bischmisheim
Tel: (0681) 89 47 46

Rainer Hamm is excellent with high and tight military styles, including razor shaving sides (Rasierschnitt) or entire head shaves with intense brush lathering.

He is also very skilled in coloring and bleaching/frosting. I had my dark brown hair bleached and he managed in four long sessions ( in part with medium heat application ) to get the white silver result I wanted without any undesired yellow effect remaining.

Regular haircuts are executed with perfection and razor sharp outlining for 20-25 Marks.

If arriving by train, take Saarbahn in front of Trainstation (Bahnhof) to Roemerkastel and Bus 28 takes customers from Roemerkastel Saarbruecken up the "mountain" to Bischmisheim, exit Busstop Hochstrasse. Ticket would be DM 3,- each way and takes about 20 minutes. ( One can also catch Bus 28 at the Saarbahn BREBACH Stop. )

Thanks to Wolf for this recommendation

Italy

Per Uomo
Via Carducci, 10 45011, Adria RO
Phone: 042 642 5050

This barber shop is located in my home town. Although I do not visit it very often, I feel like recommending it as one of the two babers, the younger guy named Mauro, is incredibly clever in giving short haircuts to his clients. I believe he is the one and only Italian barber who turns the chair away from the mirror before starting cutting the hair. When the cut is finished he turns you around to face the mirror and the ..work done. I have never experienced such a technique in any other shop in my country. He is about 28 and sports an incredible short crew cut clippered all over, very short and shorn to the skin on the back and at the sides. He loves cutting short hair and he really does know how to cut it short. You may undergo major transformations or ask simply for a maintenance cuts. Just remember to sit in his chair, as the other older guy gives only very traditional cuts while Mauro is a real expert in trendy cuts and outstanding buzz, crew, H&T, flattop cuts and all variety of short cuts. He is of few words as he believes that if you enter his shop and ask for him you have to trust him and his experience. He just gives few words of advice and suggestions only if he is asked, otherwise his clippers start going and you cannot control the action in progress. The shop is located in the historical centre of the town, it is better to park the car in the nearby parking place as the shop is at a walking distance from the main square. Prices goes from Lit. 20.000 to 25.000 including shampooing.

Salone Uomo
Via Monte Dei Pegni, 20 45021 Badia Polesine RO
Phone: 042 559 0610

This barber shop is located 1 hour south-east from Verona, the town of Romeo and Juliet. It is a two chairs shop with two barbers. The one opposite the main window is the best with any kind of short cut, from tappered cuts, to crew cuts, from buzz to induction. He is in his thirties, very friendly and a professional at what he is doing. While cutting your hair he describes you the several steps and ask often if you like the cut (although it is not yet finished).

Andrea, (in Italian this is a man's name), used to wear his hair quite long: a kind of business man cut, then he converted to shorter hair and now sports an incredible short and white-walled H&T. His shop is famous for the excellent H&T-cuts he gives and this particularity attracts many out-towners. If you have no clear idea about the cut you desire, he has a large variety of pictures to show you, where you can choose from and pick a style which inspires you. He takes his time and sometimes the wait is quite long but the final result is worth it. Prices are in the average and may go from US$18-$25 which includes shampooing as well. Opening time is Tuesday from Friday 9.00/12.00 and15.00/19.00 and Saturday from 9.00 to 16.00.

Linea Uomo
Via Orlanda, 150 30100 Campalto VE
Phone: 041 903 4000

Not far from the Venice airport, Marco Polo, this barber shop is a two-chair one with a single barber. The shop was opened few years ago and it is run by a young guy called Mauro. Being so close to the airport and in the vicinity of many international Hotels, helped this place growing up a large clientele of both business men and tourists, as well as locals of course. He is good at cutting all styles but very skillfull with his only pair of clippers. They are quite big with a lever at one side. You may ask for any cut you like, but if you are looking for a short cut and ask him for suggestion, he will then stop, pick up his clippers and start giving you the best buzz cut you ever had. Lately i was wearing my hair in a short version of an ivy-league style and he convinced me to try a new cut. I was not sure but he is a real professional and described me the cut so well that i then agreed to get a crew cut. He used a #0001 attachment on sides and back and a little bit longer on top. The result was so good and satisfactory that i repeated the cut a second time during summer. On saturdays it is better to make an appointment as he could be busy, but if you don't mind sitting on line while waiting for your turn "in the chair", you may enjoy the live-action of many different short hair cuts which may give good inspiration. Prices are in the average and shampooing is given only upon request, opening time Tuesday from Friday 9.00am/12.00 - 15.00/19.00 and Saturday from 9.00am to 4.00pm.

Hair Professional
Via Rovello 3/B 20121 Milano MI
Phone: 02 869 2072

LogoIf you are visiting Milan, that's the place to go to get a super cut. It is located in the historical centre of the town not far from the Duomo and just in front of the Castello Sforzesco. You may reach him using the local transit company or the subway exit MM Cordusio. It's address is in a narrow street, more a lane, but well know by anyone in the area. The shop is decorated in a modern-deco style with leather chairs with white porcelain armrests, large mirrors everywhere and a lot of fancy accessories: a window "pink" sign attracts your attention, if you miss the entrance.

Barbers keep changing but the owner: Marcello. They are all youngish and very skilled with clippers. If you do not ask for a particular cut, they buzz you all over, leaving approx 1 inch of hair (2cm). Then they ask you if the may go ahead and change attachment or if you are satisfied with the cut they are giving you. Don't go there for a trim, they will refuse it. The place is in the fashion area so most of the time you may see young male-models getting their regular buzz cut or new arrivals from abroad with their long mass of moptop scared when the barber start clipping. Prices go from Lit. 35.000 to Lit. 50.000, approx US$20-$30 for a complete service including shampooing. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 9.00am /5.00pm.

Styl Max
Via Euganea, 114 35100 Padova PD
Phone: 049 872 3544

Styl Max business cardPadova is the economic capital town of the north-eastern regions as Milan is the so-called industrial and business capital of Italy. This barber shop, located in the heart of the town, is a small one-room-place with two chairs. It is quite difficult to reach it as the place is right in the centre of the town at the ground floor of an arcade-building with very limited parking places. The owner is a young man very friendly and polite, he never says "no" to a client. In fact, the first time I visited him I entered the shop around 7.00pm just to ask for his business card as I knew it was quite late. Without any hesitation he invited me in the chair and asked me the usual: - what would you like it today?

He is very precise and probably a little bit slow but he pays a lot of attention to his job. He doesn't use the clippers too often as he prefers to use his scissors but if you are looking for a good crew cut, that's the right place where to go. He sports a kind of Tom Cruise/Mission Impossible crewcut and often offers this style to his clients. The wait is considerably long sometime since he is the only barber in the shop, but at least you may see many different short cuts in progress. Some clients with long hair shorn to college cuts, some short crewcuts or standard short back and sides. I never saw H&T or #1 buzzcut in his shop but he is great with short crew cuts like his: he usually starts by slowly clipping with scissors to about 1/2 in., working his way around untill you see the shape of your head. Only if asked he uses the 1/4" attachment but no skin is seen in his haircuts. Only one price for a complete service with shampoo: lit 30.000 approx US$18. Open Tuesday to Friday 9.30/12.00 - 15.30/19.30 and Saturday from 9.00 to 17.00, appointment suggested.

I Parucchieri
Largo F. Bandiera, 2 45100 Rovigo RO
Phone: 042 530 8833

This place is more a stylist salon that a barber shop. It is divided in two areas: one for men and the other for women. There are two male barbers for men's haircuts and approx 3-4 girls for women hairdos. One of the girls sometime helps the two barbers with their job as the men section is more jammed (especially on weekends). I personally don't like this kind of store too much but one of the two barbers is excellent with his clippers. Another good reason to visit this shop is given by the fact that the younger barber keeps changing his style everytime you visit him. He goes from long shoulder hair to bowl cuts, from ivy league to business man cuts, from crewcuts to buzz. When you think he is over with styles he surprises you with incredibly short H&T with white-walled sides and back or with french crop.

This summer, he was very busy with #0000 buzzcuts and/or induction type cuts thanks to his considerable skill with short cuts and to the World Soccer Championship. As a matter of fact this important sports event held in July in France, gave an incredible amount of extra work to many barbers, as several famous players were sporting shorn-to-the-skin cuts or induction cuts (one for all the Brazilian outcaster Ronaldo). He never asks: do you like to have your hair trimmed?....he starts immediately with his eletric clippers and in the blink of an eye you change to a totally different style. Service is a bit expensive around US$25/35 but if you are looking for a short buzzcut, go there and don't forget to make an appointment. This place is very busy and opening time may change due to season.

Poland

Salon Frzjerskie Meski (Mens Barbershop)
ul. Poznanska, 37 Warsaw, Poland
Phone: 629-4451
Shop hours: Monday-Friday 0800-1900, Saturdays 0800-1600.

By far the best barbershop scene in Warsaw. Six chairs staffed by young barbers (about 20 years old) and mostly male. Barbers apprentice with the owner who teaches technique, then they stay and cut mostly super short buzzcuts, flattops, and half/full crowns. Super short hair is the rage in Warsaw, and these barbers know how to cut it short. Always packed with young guys undergoing major transformations and maintaince cuts (I go once per week). It's a narrow shop, so the hair flies everywhere and practically lands on you waiting in chairs opposite the barber. You'll sit facing the mirror for the whole cut providing a good vantage point to watch the action. Best flattops are given by Adam, Michael, and Andreze.

Ask for a Ceglka (translation -Little Brick) if you want a flat top, and for a 000 on the sides and back ask for najkrocej (shortest). They don't speak english but thats part of the fun. Chances are others will be having flats so just point and say " tak samo" (the same). I have been getting my flat clipped here for 4 years, without disappointment.

Cost varies between 10 and 12 zl (about $3.50). Located two blocks east of the Marriott Hotel. Worth a trip.

Portugal

Barbearia Commercial
Coimbra, Portugal (Center Region)

Located on the middle landing of the Saint Tiago Steps, this shop is the place to get a haircut in Portugal's 3rd largest city. All Six chairs are manned certified barbers (most shops are manned by only one Master with several apprentices). Under this roof, old barbering techniques melded with the new to provide the customer with their best haircut and shave ever. Joao at the far back knows some English and is more than happy to accomadate English speaking tourist. We even has a couple of drinks afterwards to discuss our cultures. And you cannot beat his straight edge shave! Last month I saw him give a long haired customer a perfect crewcut with just a scissor and a comb. The man had been clipped too short in other places with clippers. He left with a huge smile on his face. Don't miss him.

Scotland

Hair By Alfie
Fleshmarket Close, Edinburgh

Definitely worth all the steps you have to climb to get to it. Saturday is proof of how popular it is. Bang up-to-date with the latest short styles, a crop (Caesar) will cost about £6. The younger man with his hair in a crop is the best and does a great job. He's quick and excellent with the clippers.

Updated!York Barbers
York Place, New Town, Edinburgh

Below street level and near St Andrew's bus station, this is quite hard to spot. It does, however have two excellent barbers who talk you through your cut and actually give helpful advice should you want a new look. (The blonde-haired one persuaded me to go short to a French crop and I've stuck with it ever since.)
