Creating an Ivy League

From the PERFECT BUZZCUTS video from Scerbo Video Productions. Check the website for details! These step by step photos are examples of type of instructions that can be found on the PERFECT BUZZCUTS video.

This series of photos shows the cutting of an ivy league. As with all haircuts shown at the Buzztown Barber Shop, there are a number of different varieties with this style. In this example, the hair is cut to 1/4 inch at the back and sides and over the crown of the head. Midway in the centre of the head, in this example, the 1/4 inch cut ends the the hair from that point forward is probably around one and a half to two inches in length, with longer bangs. This is perhaps a more modern version of an ivy league and looks great on kids, as is shown here.

A more traditional version of the ivy league features the hair gradually getting longer from the crown forward, but generally not as long as the example here. Often the hair towards the front of the head will be just long enough to be combed over (around one inch, depending on hair type). The hair may still be cut to around 1/4 inch over the crown, or may start getting slightly longer below the crown so that it is around 1/2 inch over the crown. However, if it is much longer than this over the crown, then it's not really an ivy league.

The ivy league is an ideal cut for a guy wanting to test drive short hair or as the first step for someone working their way down to a shorter style. The longer hair in front can give the wearer more flexibility in how the hair is worn (especially when it is quite long at front, as shown here). Whether it's a traditional ivy league or a more modern variety you want, you will need to explain to your barber how you want your ivy league cut.

In an ivy league (or college cut), the hair at the crown is cut down to anywhere from 1/2" to 1/4", much like in a crewcut. However, the front section of the hair is left a little longer and is often not cut with the clippers. Here we see the crown area being cut with a 1/4" blade guard.

In the finished cut the bangs can be left down.

Brushed down.

The bangs can also be brushed to the side with gel or hairspray.

The final side view shows a slightly tapered back, squared off sideburns, and a rather full, yet close cut look around the back of the head leading to the crown area.
