A barber's tip on preparing to cut a flattop

I have been a licensed Barber for 17 years here in the state of Kansas. I have been reading some of the tips on different haircutting styles and have enjoyed them, I do have a suggestion for the haircutting of a flattop, on getting the hair to stand up. What I do is I purchase Powdered Alum at the local Pharmacy and I mix it with regular tap water and shake it up untill I get a powder, This along with shaving cream {hot} put on the hair will get the the desired effect to proceed with a true barber flattop.
