American Crew Shaving Products

This article describes some of the shaving products sold by American Crew. It was written by Chris, who also wrote The Opinion of a Young Barber article in Buzztown's discussion about the future of the barber shop.

America Crew Shaving OilThe dreaded morning shave when you stumble into the bathroom and prepare yourself for the scrape of the blade across your face. Is there anyway to make the procedure more comfortable and still get a close shave? For the past two years, I have been using the shaving products produced by American Crew which have made my morning shave a little easier.

The first product I tried was the shaving oil and I have been hooked on it ever since. I was skeptical at first, but having received a free sample while I was in barber school, I decided to give it a try. To my surprise, I found that I got a closer, more comfortable shave with less razor drag. I have also noticed that the 5 o'clock shadow now starts at 5 o'clock as opposed to 2 o'clock. The shaving oil is easy to use; just take a couple of drops with hot water and massage into the beard. Wait about thirty seconds and apply shaving cream. You will notice the difference the first time you use it. I have also used the shaving oil by itself as a preshave when using an electric razor.

Having had good success with the shaving oil, I decided to try the other products made by American Crew and started with the shaving cream. However, any shaving cream will work well with the oil as a base. This American Crew product has a totally different texture from traditional shaving creams and it is similar to Noxzema (no distinctive odor though). This product has to be worked into the beard with hot water or you will clog your razor. You only need to use a small amount of the product to get good results and it creates a tingling feeling on your face.

Since I have sensitive skin, I do not use any aftershaves that contain alcohol. Once I rinse my face with warm water, I follow up with cold water which is a natural pore tightener. I then apply the American Crew aftershave moisturizer but there are also some good products in the drugstore that do not contain any alcohol.

I encourage you to try these products and if the only product you choose is the shaving oil, you will be ahead of the game. Before you buy though, get a free sample, that way you have nothing to lose. I hope you enjoy these products as much as I have.

I would like to thank Chris for his suggestions. I tried American Crew "Essential Shave Oil", and it is everything that he says in his article. American Crew products are available from selected salons and barber shops. I paid around $10 for a 1 oz (30 ml) bottle. You only need about two drops of the oil (as Chris pointed out), so the bottle should last you a while.

I also tried the American Crew "Herbal Shaving Cream" and I was surprised at how much I liked it. It costs around $8 for 6 oz (180ml) - but as Chris says, you only use a little. And if you think that a cool rinse after a regular shave feels good, wait until you try a cool rinse after using the American Crew shaving cream.
